Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate/review the skills required for library and information science (LIS) professionals in the 21st century and to propose an alternative approach as the suggested key skills.
Design/methodology/approach
Twenty-two LIS professionals from Pakistan were interviewed, and 10 LIS professionals were from abroad, including two from the USA; six respondents were from Saudi Arabia; one from Canada; and one from Malaysia. In-depth interviews with faculty members were conducted to ascertain their perceptions of the knowledge and skills necessary to be competent in delivering quality education to the future information breed.
Findings
The findings emphasise the importance of a variety of competencies for librarians and information educators, including subject knowledge and skills; information technology knowledge and skills; instructional skills; research skills; and managerial, leadership and social skills. Additionally, it was noted that LIS professionals require a diverse set of skills that should be fostered by educators and employers. By promoting these in the broader community, the author can encourage the next generation of LIS professionals to consider LIS as a viable career option.
Originality/value
The findings presented in this paper provide a unique window into the country’s workforce needs. Though the study was conducted from a Pakistani perspective, the findings may have implications for other countries with comparable circumstances, including social impact. It also provides a new analysis of the selected generic and LIS skills that can be communicated in an innovative manner to prospective LIS employees, employers and educators.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the status of library and information science (LIS) education in Pakistan, as well as LIS progress, level of employment and issues, infrastructure and facilities, challenges faced by LIS institutions and future prospects of the profession.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 115 permanent/regular and visiting academic members from different Pakistani institutions/universities participated in the research. A mixed-method was used, and data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.
Findings
This study’s results showed that assistant, associate and associate professors have been very involved in producing high-quality research articles and producing quality graduates. This study also found that there are several problems with LIS education in Pakistan, such as a lack of qualified teachers, resources and facilities. This study provides all the answers to these problems. They are useful for LIS teachers and students in Pakistan because LIS education has been around for a long time, but there are still some problems that need to be fixed. The results could have an immediate effect on the direction, ability to survive and future of LIS education in Pakistan.
Originality/value
Previously, different studies have been conducted on evolution and challenges to the LIS profession, but to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has been reported based on the professional experiences in other Universities of Pakistan. According to the research, the findings are crucial for LIS professors and students in Pakistan. In addition, the research investigates the challenges faced by LIS teachers in Pakistan. It concludes with suggestions on how to address some of these problems. It is also said that Pakistan must develop universal standards for LIS to close the gap between what users want and what library workers can do.

Abstract
Purpose
The field of library and information sciences (LIS) is crucial to our educational system. Across the globe, the LIS systems operate at varying levels and rates of efficiency. One of the developing nations is Pakistan, which has LIS systems in all of its colleges, universities and schools. This multimethod study aims to identify and quantify elements that are detrimental to LIS progress as well as evaluate the faculty and infrastructure profiles of universities that offer LIS undergraduate and graduate level programmes.
Design/methodology/approach
Data was collected from the study's participants, who were mainly LIS professionals and faculty at 17 different universities, using survey questionnaires and in-person interviews. This study used a descriptive survey methodology, gathering information through a Google Survey and filling it out with a premade survey proforma. The survey responses were examined using content analysis. The development of LIS instructional and scholarly output is influenced by a variety of factors, which were investigated using a generalized linear model (GLM). To determine whether there was a statistically significant difference in opinion between faculty members and working professionals, as well as between men and women, the outcomes of an independent sample t-test were examined.
Findings
According to our data, the factors that have the biggest impact on the caliber and output of LIS research are “poor writing skills” (3.43), “lack of journal publication fees” (3.51) and “lack of research skills” (3.78). The top GLM model identified poor writing skills, a lack of publication fees and a lack of research expertise as bottleneck characteristics for producing high-quality LIS research. The aforementioned factors were 3.62, 2.41 and 2.19 times more significant than the average factor, respectively, to put it another way.
Originality/value
This study’s analysis revealed that there is no real distinction between the two groups' viewpoints. The results of this study can be applied to problems and challenges associated with LIS education in Pakistani educational institutions.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the link between knowledge-oriented leadership (KOL) and organizational performance (OP) at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) both directly and indirectly through service innovation and knowledge-sharing quality.
Design/methodology/approach
This research used Smart PLS 4.0 to model structural equations using a sample comprising 237 academic staff from HEIs in China.
Findings
According to the study data, KOL has a negligible direct influence on organizational performance. The link between KOL and OP, on the other hand, is entirely mediated by the quality of knowledge sharing quality and service innovation.
Practical implications
The study results validate universities' experience with KOL and propose ways for academics at higher education institutions to prioritize the quality of knowledge sharing and service innovation, which in turn helps organizations function better in a volatile environment.
Originality/value
Despite the growing relevance of knowledge-oriented leadership in higher education, little research has been conducted to examine the mediating impact of numerous factors in the link between KOL and OP. The present research examines the link between knowledge-oriented leadership, the quality of knowledge sharing, service innovation and the performance of higher education institutions. The current study scientifically investigates the link between KOL and OP and offers insight into the existing literature by examining the mediating role of KSQ and SI.

Abstract
Purpose
Industry 4.0 is regarded as a modern industrial phase wherein convergence between horizontal and vertical production systems, along with their interactions, would enable industries to obtain excellent industrial efficiency. This research thus explores the barriers relevant to Industry 4.0 and their cause and effect relations using the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) technique, and this will assist in the implementation of Industry 4.0 in manufacturing industries.
Design/methodology/approach
A comprehensive literature review is carried out to outline the barriers for the Industry 4.0 implementation. The investigative techniques used in this research were conducted utilizing a questionnaire as an instrument for collecting data. The data collected were analysed using the method DEMATEL.
Findings
The findings indicate that key barriers to implementing Industry 4.0 include their cause and effect relationships. Reported “implementation costs” have been a critical barrier for Industry 4.0 implementation. Prioritization of barriers and their cause and effect relationships was achieved so that decision-makers could concentrate on overcoming such barriers for Industry 4.0 implementation.
Practical implications
The research is intended to assist executives in recognizing the barriers to Industry 4.0 implementation in their manufacturing industries. Furthermore, the strong functional and empirical importance of emerging and digital manufacturing technologies ensures that understanding the necessary barriers to implementation is important.
Originality/value
This is one of the first few empirical studies in the field of Indian manufacturing industries that uses the DEMATEL method framework as a foundation for recognizing cause-effect interactions among the barriers that affect Industry 4.0.

Abstract
Purpose
A literature review revealed that government of various developing economies have put an effort on health-care supply chain through the executing critical factors (CFs) directly. Although they have attained some significant benefits in this tactic, but it was not up to satisfactory level. One of the reasons can be attributed to the fact that government/policy makers are not quantifying the impact of CFs on health-care supply chain. This paper aims to propose a methodology to quantify and estimate the impact of CFs on government-supported health-care supply chain (GHSC).
Design/methodology/approach
The Graph Theoretic Approach is proposed for estimating the impact and utility of CFs on an Indian GHSC. This study is also extended to scenario analysis for comparing results with different performance situation.
Findings
The results obtained from this study show that performance of Indian GHSC is satisfactory, but performance gaps exist which need to be reduced. In this research work, 12 CFs are identified under two significant categories (SCs), i.e. enablers and barriers and the intensity of enablers and barriers have been calculated to show the impact or influence of CFs on GHSC. The value of intensity shows that the role or impact of enabler category (i.e. performance measurement, employee recognition and reward, technology adoption, training cell, inbuilt analytical tool for IT system) is higher on Indian GHSC in comparison to barriers category to enhance the performance of GHSC.
Research limitations/implications
The obtained numerical results are completely in specific to the Indian perspective only; hence, they cannot be generalized for other countries. Simultaneously, this study is related to government supported health-care system; hence, the selection of expert panel was crucial due to the unavailability of doctors and other stakeholders of government system.
Practical implications
The proposed approach is aimed at providing a procedure for evaluating the impact of CFs on HSC in general and GHSC in specific. This study is an attempt to assist government and top management of GHSC to assess the impact of CFs on GHSC and accordingly define its course of actions.
Originality/value
Although various issues related to the CFs have been broadly identified and analyzed, no dedicated study has been reported in the field for quantification of impacts of CFs. Furthermore, this proposed model has an ability to recognize the specific contribution of each CF and overall contribution.

Abstract
Purpose
One of the achievements of the fourth industrial revolution is smart manufacturing, a manufacturing system based on Industry 4.0 technologies that will increase systems' reliability, efficiency and productivity. Despite the many benefits, some barriers obstruct the implementation of this manufacturing system. This study aims to analyze these barriers.
Design/methodology/approach
One of the measures that must be taken is to identify and try to remove these barriers, which involves identifying the stakeholders and components of technology associated with each barrier. As such, the primary purpose of this paper is to present a systematic literature review in the field of smart manufacturing with a focus on barriers to implementation related to the stakeholders and components of technology.
Findings
This research conducted a systematic literature review in Scopus and Web of Science databases and considered the studies published until 2021 were examined. The central question of this paper is answered based on this literature review, in which 133 related studies and 15 barriers were identified.
Practical implications
The significant gap observed in the literature review is that no research has been conducted to determine the stakeholders and components of technology related to the barriers, making it a potentially worthwhile subject for future research. In addition, the results of this study may help managers to implement smart manufacturing.
Originality/value
This study provides two main originalities. The former is helpful information for managers to make effective decisions when they face smart manufacturing barriers. The latter is related to identifying critical research gaps through systematic literature review.
