Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report on Florida State University Libraries' program designed to bring information services directly to patrons in the Strozier Library without requiring them to physically come to a service desk.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is a simple program evaluation of ten months' worth of data from the students (phase one) and staff members (phase two) who walked the floors assisting patrons. Statistics taken at each phase by both groups were analyzed and compared for any noticeable discrepancies in number or type.
Findings
Statistics taken during the first phase show this program to be a valuable asset to the library, and that it should be continued even if Strozier does not move in the direction of providing “deskless” services. The second phase did not garner as many questions and we are currently evaluating the data to determine if the repressive factor was the personnel differences, semester (time of year) or the service, and how we can improve the results.
Research limitations/implications
This paper cannot be generalized since it is specific to one setting with limited data.
Originality/value
This paper holds potential value to other libraries considering embarking on a similar initiative.
