Compares and contrasts the benefits of Web menuing against the merits of OPAC cataloging. Looks at recent electronic developments of OPAC cataloging using web interfacing and the cost implications of cataloging the large volumes of data available. Discusses new metadata formats and offers a succint definition of metadata. Considers the need for national standards in electronic data searching.

Provides an overview of the support issues University of Wisconsin libraries have faced in running a SilverPlatter Electronic Reference Library database server for numerous resources. Focuses on the growing pains as size limitations were reached and the problem solving interaction and co‐ordination with the software vendor and resource supplier. Presents a model for future shared database support and considers new upgrades which have helped to address some issues.

Abstract
As technology changes, so do methods for delivering electronic information resources to library users. Describes Web‐based online public access catalogs (Web OPACS) and other Web‐based tools as gateway methods for providing access to library collections. Solutions for overcoming barriers to information, such as through the implementation of proxy servers and other authentication tools for remote users, are also addressed.
