Abstract

A cooperative model of staff development in relation to professional education is outlined which considers staff development within both further and higher education. Examines general principles of human resource development, continuing professional development as well as quality and benchmarking issues. A case study of the development of course tutors who have academic responsibility for managing professional courses approved by the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD) within further education colleges and universities in the North East of England is presented. Considers the cooperative approach to staff development between competing educational institutions and the collective relationship between the educational institutions and a professional body. The need for cooperation is examined within the context of the professional institute and the challenges facing the Education Group at its inception are briefly outlined. Benefits for staff, students and ultimately the professional body are detailed and, finally, the model is summarised and its application to other institutions is briefly considered.

Abstract

As one of a number of new learning technologies, multimedia is increasingly being used in traditional training and development events and also in open and flexible learning modules. With a move towards more flexible working practices, it is necessary to provide a more flexible approach to learning, training and development, particularly with regard to timing, location and the needs of the learner. Multimedia provides that flexibility. Gives educators, and training and development specialists some understanding of what multimedia is by providing a number of definitions and considering the benefits of using multimedia materials. Outlines developing and producing multimedia materials, together with some of the complex legal issues involved in production.

You will not become a legal expert by reading this article, but it will hopefully enable you to ask appropriate questions and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your organization.

Abstract

This article considers the reasons why food retailers currently employ predominantly part‐time staff from the employers’ perspective based on both primary and secondary research. It examines the reasons and considers the differences between part‐time and full‐time staff in terms of ratio, equal treatment and capacity in which part‐time staff are employed. The impact of new legislation is briefly reviewed. Lessons from the food retail industry, where flexibility in terms of part‐time staff has been commonplace for many years, can be applied to other sectors and employment practices in general.
