Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an efficient heuristic algorithm based on the 3-neighborhood approach. In this paper, search is made from sides of both feasible and infeasible regions to find near-optimal solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The algorithm performs a series of selection and exchange operations in 3-neighborhood to see whether this exchange yields still an improved feasible solution or converges to a near-optimal solution in which case the algorithm stops.

Findings

The proposed algorithm has been tested on complex system structures which have been widely used. The results show that this 3-neighborhood approach not only can obtain various known solutions but also is computationally efficient for various complex systems.

Research limitations/implications

In general, the proposed heuristic is applicable to any coherent system with no restrictions on constraint functions; however, to enforce convergence, inferior solutions might be included only when they are not being too far from the optimum.

Practical implications

It is observed that the proposed heuristic is reasonably proficient in terms of various measures of performance and computational time.

Social implications

Reliability optimization is very important in real life systems such as computer and communication systems, telecommunications, automobile, nuclear, defense systems, etc. It is an important issue prior to real life systems design.

Originality/value

The utilization of 3-neighborhood strategy seems to be encouraging as it efficiently enforces the convergence to a near-optimal solution; indeed, it attains quality solutions in less computational time in comparison to other existing heuristic algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on solving highly constrained redundancy optimization problems in binary complex systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed algorithm searches a possibly improved solution in the k‐neighborhood (k≥2) of the current best feasible solution, by adding one unit in a selected subsystem and eliminating one from some other subsystem(s).

Findings

The algorithm is tested on complex system structures from the literature by solving a set of problems (with both linear and non‐linear constraints), with given and randomly generated data. It is observed that, compared with the other existing heuristics, there is much overall improvement in various performance measures.

Practical implications

The proposed algorithm is a better alternative and can be easily and efficiently applied to numerous real life systems such as computer and communication systems, telecommunication networks, automobile, nuclear and defense systems etc., giving optimal/near‐optimal solutions.

Originality/value

Researchers in reliability optimization have placed emphasis on heuristic approaches. The paper presents a new heuristic algorithm for solving the constrained redundancy optimization problems in complex binary systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the dominant brand attributes based on the survey conducted among 100 young consumers to know their perceptions toward sustainable brands, using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques, arithmetic hierarchical process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS).

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 100 young consumers (18 to 24 age group) were asked to provide the pairwise comparisons for the 10 brands. MCDM methods were applied on triple bottom line dimensions to identify the best alternative. AHP is applied to compute weights for the brands’ attributes necessary for brand’s sustainability, further analyzed by TOPSIS method to rank Forbes’ top 10 brands as per young consumers’ intentions to buy.

Findings

Apple is the most sustainable brand perceived by young consumers followed by Google and Samsung. Being the top brand in Forbes list Apple also fulfills its responsibility toward the environment and recognizes young consumers’ perception accurately. Google is also contending with the same strategy and succeed in achieving a sustainable brand image. Samsung despite at number seven and second-highest revenues after Apple has managed excellently in building sustainable brand image.

Research limitations/implications

Findings have shown that the top global brands do not show the same order as they exhibit in their top ranking (Forbes, 2019), and thus, create a research gap to be fulfilled by identifying the causes for the same. The results show that brand consistency and performance can be achieved through implementing sustainable and green practices such as acting social responsibility, high-quality green products, environment protection, etc., and transforming these into capabilities.

Practical implications

The study is an attempt to further validate Forbes’s top brands based on their perception among young customers. The study may help practitioners and policymakers to understand and get familiar with a new methodology to evaluate brands and also how to develop a positioning strategy for targeting young consumers. The paper will be a useful source of information for marketers to know how young consumers from developing countries perceive top brands on the basis of sustainability.

Social implications

The social benefits of brand sustainability are related to improvements in the quality of environment, health and well-being. To link these, an enabling environment must be created that optimizes resource use, allocation and distribution.

Originality/value

The study is a unique attempt to use AHP and TOPSIS to evaluate the best – performing green brand from the perception of young customers in developing counties. Besides, the study provides brands attributes’ framework for sustainability and is significant for developing a model as per the choices of the young consumers.

Abstract

With economic reforms increasing market competition, greater efficiency and productivity of factors of production, particularly of the workforce, have become important prerequisites for firms' growth and survival. Consequently, designing appropriate strategies to motivate the workforce in this direction appears as a critical aspect of human resource management. However, an important issue is if increase in wages, salaries, and other benefits can necessarily result in the desired outcomes. This chapter will examine this aspect. Estimating long-term trends in share of wages, salaries, and total emoluments in major industries, it is found that while the share of wages, salaries, and total emoluments has increased in recent years, such changes are not reflected in higher productivity. It is, therefore, suggested that, in addition to higher wages, salaries, and other benefits, enhancing efficiency and productivity of human resources requires adequate emphasis on human aspects as well.
