Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to determine the knowledge and attitudes of the physicians regarding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), to emphasize that these patients exist and they will exist in the future and to raise awareness so as to prevent that their rights to treatment are revoked.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey was conducted via a link sent through an online system. Random physicians from 81 cities of the country were invited to the survey. The survey has 41 questions regarding knowledge and attitudes in total, including epidemiological information such as age, gender and title.

Findings

A total of 3,107 physicians has voluntarily participated in the study. In total, 2,195 (70.7%) are internal physicians and 912 (29.3%) are surgical physicians among the participant physicians. In total, 1,452 (46.7%) of the participants are specialist physicians, 608 (19.6%) of the participants are practising physician and the rest of it is physician assistants, academicians and dentists, respectively.

Originality/value

In this study, it has been found out that the physicians have a lack of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and they adopt a discriminatory attitude towards HIV-positive persons. HIV-positive patients who are exposed to discrimination and scared of being uncovered refrain from applying to hospitals for treatment, which puts public health into jeopardy due to the high viral load and these patients are faced with difficulties in coping with both medical and emotional load of the disease.

Abstract

Purpose

As a result of referee evaluation, the subject scope of the article has been expanded. Previously, only polycaprolactone (PCL) loaded with peppermint extract had been studied. As a result of peer review, nanostructure production was made with peppermint-loaded polylactic acid (PLA). Literature information about PLA polymer has been added to the Introduction section. Additionally, to analyze the presence of peppermint extract in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements, a comparison was made with 100% PCL, 100% PLA and 100% peppermint extract. In order to observe the effect of polymer type, evaluations were made between the produced peppermint-loaded nanostructures containing two different polymers. Mechanical, structural and morphological properties of the produced nanostructures were measured. The main purpose of the study is to analyze and evaluate peppermint-loaded nanostructures on different polymers.

Design/methodology/approach

Nanofiber structures were produced by the electrospinning process due to their attractive properties such as low cost, flexibility, integrability and high efficiency. The production parameters of the nanofiber structure produced by the electrospinning process, mechanical measurements, fiber morphologies with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and structural characterization with FTIR measurement were analyzed, and its potential in possible usage areas was interpreted.

Findings

In this study, the production of nanostructures containing peppermint extract with PCL and PLA polymers, which are various biodegradable and biocompatible polymeric materials, was successfully achieved. In the studies carried out, nanofiber structures with positive properties such as low cost, easy accessibility, flexibility, integrability and sustainability were produced. When the two nanofiber structures produced were compared, it was observed that the peppermint extract nanofiber structure containing PCL provided better morphological and mechanical properties, such as higher strength, thinner fibers' diameter and a smooth and homogeneous surface, compared to the peppermint core nanofiber structure containing PLA. It has been observed that PCL polymer is more advantageous in obtaining nanofibers under the same environmental conditions and the same parameters. The addition of peppermint extract caused an approximately 25% loss in strength in nanostructures containing PCL polymer compared to nanostructures containing 100% PCL. The strength loss in PLA nanostructures containing peppermint extract is approximately 90% compared to nanostructures containing 100% PLA. This situation is associated with the regular arrangement of nanostructures containing PCL. In conclusion, incorporating peppermint extract into the nanofiber structures fabrication process offers several benefits, including enhanced antimicrobial properties and potential bioactive effects.

Originality/value

In the study, a uniform and suitable-for-use nanofiber structure with a smooth and partially beaded surface was obtained by an electrospinning method using peppermint extract and PCL and PLA polymers. Morphological evaluation was made with SEM images of the obtained nanofiber structure, and the presence of peppermint extract in the nanofiber structure was determined by the FTIR analysis. In the mechanical analysis, a decrease was observed in the elongation at break and tensile strength values of nanostructures loaded with mint extract, but this decrease did not prevent the production and use of the nanofiber structure.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of resource use and environmental innovation on firms’ financial costs.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consists of 2,588 firm-year observations from 647 companies collected from Thomson Reuters over a five-year period (year 2014 to year 2018). The authors analyze the data using panel-corrected standard errors, which corrects heteroskedasticity issues and contemporaneous error in the data. Further, the authors adopt cluster analysis based on the year and industry. The authors also adopt the generalized method of moments and two-stage least squares regression to check for endogeneity issues and validate the findings.

Findings

The findings generally indicate that resource use is negatively associated with firms’ cost of capital. Firms’ engagement with operational activities improves savings in the usage of resources, but environmental innovation is found to be positively associated with the cost of capital. This may be attributable to higher capital investment, stringent risk assessment and third-party assurance associated with firms’ environmental innovation.

Research limitations/implications

The findings urge regulators, practitioners and stakeholders to engage in more dialogues to reduce the costs associated with environmental sustainability innovation. This may be in the form of new technologies, energy-saving products, waste recycling and green innovations. Government intervention via greater infrastructure, tax incentives and regulatory reform may support the growth of innovation in emerging market economies.

Practical implications

Efforts are needed to encourage a dynamic, innovative and entrepreneurial mindset among the people living in emerging countries. Also, government regulatory reform is imperative in encouraging innovations in the environmental, social and governance ecosystem.

Social implications

The effect on society would be in the form of a new product innovation that creates better living standards and environments for the communities.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the few studies that focuses on the impact of firms’ resource use and environmental innovativeness and its implications on business financial costs in both emerging and developed markets.
