Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate trends in research and clinical practice that may contribute to the limited utility of assessment and treatment modalities designed to capture and address psychopathy. It identifies a lack of consistency between the academic understanding of psychopathy and how the construct is applied in clinical contexts. The authors provide clarity and direction for a more effective application of the psychopathy construct in practical contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

This review first examines the etiology of important limitations to psychopathy research and practical application, and proposes the adoption of the most recent empirical conceptualization of the construct into practical contexts. It then evaluates the current functionality of psychopathy in practical contexts. The review ultimately proposes a method for designing intervention practices based on the model used in the development of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for borderline personality disorder, which will improve the practical utility of the construct.

Findings

The present review provides evidence that a multifaceted and dimensional perspective of psychopathy will improve the practical utility of the construct and help move the field forward. It suggests that considering independent components of the psychopathy construct along a continuous scale, as with DBT, will contribute to improvements in assessments and treatments that target psychopathy.

Practical implications

The current review applies relevant research to a model for developing an intervention modality particularly in forensic or correctional settings where individuals high in psychopathy are often seen. The implications outlined provide a framework that could impact practice and assessment in forensic contexts moving forward.

Originality/value

Previous research has not concisely outlined problems concerning the link between psychopathy research and how the construct is applied in practical settings. Few researchers have proposed plausible solutions that could improve the utility of the construct in such settings.

Abstract

Purpose

In Belgium, mentally ill offenders often spend extended periods in forensic psychiatric hospitals, where restrictive living conditions can affect their quality of life (QoL). QoL is a key factor in these settings, influencing both short- and long-term recidivism risks. Despite its significance, research on QoL in Belgian forensic psychiatry is scarce. Internationally, studies highlight that the sexuality domain tends to score lower than other QoL areas. This study aims to explore QoL in forensic psychiatry with a particular focus on the sexuality domain.

Design/methodology/approach

This cross-sectional, observational study involved 275 male forensic psychiatric patients, all found not guilty by reason of insanity and under court-ordered psychiatric treatment. Patients resided in either treatment units or long-term forensic care units. Data were analyzed using R Studio.

Findings

Patients in medium-security units in Flanders reported the lowest satisfaction in the sexuality domain compared to other QoL areas. Additionally, overall QoL declined with longer stays in forensic psychiatric care.

Practical implications

The study underscores the need for clear policies regarding sexuality in forensic psychiatric settings. Integrating sexuality and sexual health assessments into routine evaluations is recommended. Future research should explore long-term QoL changes while investigating the impact of sexuality policies and considering gender and cultural differences. Collaboration between forensic institutions is key to improving data collection, while staff training on addressing sexuality is essential. Including patients in policy development and promoting their sexual health rights will help create a more inclusive environment.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to pool data from three forensic medium-security units in Flanders, providing new insights into QoL in Belgian forensic psychiatry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a unique leadership curriculum developed at the University of Florida and its impact on the leadership skills and values of the anesthesiology residents since its conception. The authors instituted a voluntary anesthesiology residency leadership development program at their institution to fill a perceived gap in leadership training. Mounting evidence reveals that strong clinical leadership skills improve outcomes for patients and health-care institutions. Additionally, this growing body of literature indicates that optimal outcomes result from effective team behaviors and skills, which are directed through the requisite clinical leadership. Unfortunately, adding leadership training into the existing medical education curriculum is a formidable challenge regardless of the level of learner.

Design/methodology/approach

To evaluate learners, the authors used the Aspiring leaders in Healthcare-Empowering individuals, Achieving excellence, Developing talents instrument, which is a validated and reliable assessment of leadership competency in health-care professionals. In 2017, the authors surveyed the past five graduating classes from the department (classes of 2012-2016), using the two graduating classes before the program’s implementation as a historical control group.

Findings

The survey was sent to 96 people, of whom 70 responded (73 per cent). Those participants who usually or always participated in the program responded with higher leadership-readiness skills scores than those who occasionally, rarely or never participated in the program. Notably, those who had participated in another leadership development course at any time had higher skills scores than those who had never participated.

Originality/value

The study’s data provide evidence that residents who either, often or always participated in the leadership development program perceived themselves to be better equipped to become effective health-care leaders as opposed to residents who never, rarely or occasionally participated.

Abstract

Purpose

Most contemporary research in medical education focuses on the undergraduate component conducted within medical schools. The purpose of this paper, however, is to better understand how medical residents and practicing attending physicians learned to practice within the context of the emergency medicine department (ED) workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

In all, 18 residents and 15 attending physicians were interviewed about their learning in the ED. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim then analysed using an iterative approach. Emergent themes were shared with the participants to ensure they were an accurate representation of their lived experiences.

Findings

The first of the three main findings was that the ED learning environment was characterised as “messy” because of the inherently chaotic nature of the workplace. The second finding was that patients and nurses were informal partners in learning. The third main finding was that learning and working in the ED can be difficult, isolating and often lacks continuity.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation associated with this research relates to the highly situated and contextually bound nature of this study. Nevertheless, the findings should be generative for others interested in supporting the work and learning of health professionals.

Originality/value

This study shifts the focus in medical education research from formal undergraduate education to learning in high stress and chaotic workplaces. Accordingly, this work provides valuable insights for others interested in the messy realities of learning in professional practice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to map the intellectual structure of sustainable finance and accounting (SFA) literature by identifying the influential aspects, main research streams and future research directions in SFA.

Design/methodology/approach

The results are obtained using bibliometric citation analysis and content analysis to conduct a bibliometric review of the intersection of sustainable finance and sustainable accounting using a sample of 795 articles published between 1991 and November 2023.

Findings

The most influential factors in the SFA literature are identified, highlighting three primary areas of research: corporate social responsibility and environmental disclosure; financial and economic performance; and regulations and standards.

Practical implications

SFA has experienced rapid development in recent years. The results identify the current research domain, guide potential future research directions, serve as a reference for SFA and provide inspiration to policymakers.

Social implications

SFA typically encompasses sustainable corporate business practices and investments. This study contributes to broader social impacts by promoting improved corporate practices and sustainability.

Originality/value

This study expands on previous research on SFA. The authors identify significant aspects of the SFA literature, such as the most studied nations, leading journals, authors and trending publications. In addition, the authors provide an overview of the three major streams of the SFA literature and propose various potential future research directions, inspiring both academic research and policymaking.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the information content of changes in fair values of investment property reported under international accounting standards (IAS) 40 and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 13 to debtholders. This study further examines the effect of fair value hierarchy inputs, valuer types and the quality of fair value measurement-related disclosure on the information usefulness of changes in fair value.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper performs a panel regression on the cost of debt capital and changes in fair value of investment properties, and fair value measurement features using data covering periods 2007–2015 from Australian real estate companies.

Findings

The findings suggest that changes in fair value of investment property are informative about the real estate firm’s future cash flow to debtholders. Also, the findings show that the use of unobservable inputs in an active market (Level 3 inputs) and Level 2 has no different impacts on the cost of debts. Also, this paper documents that employing the directors solely in valuation may lead to a higher cost of debts. Furthermore, this paper reports that an extensive fair value disclosure appears no additional value in the debt decision.

Originality/value

Collectively, the findings indicate that although the use of unobservable inputs is common in the real estate sector, information on the changes of the fair value of investment properties are informative to debtholders. The findings have important implications for accounting standard setters to consider revisiting the IAS 40 and IFRS 13 on whether the independent valuation should be required and whether the extensive disclosure requirement is worthwhile.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand how leaders of entrepreneurial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia and Pakistan strategise and design their organisational environments to enable innovation and enhanced organisational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing from the resource-based view (RBV) theory, this study investigates the mediating role of workplace innovation between design leadership and organisational performance across entrepreneurial SMEs in Australia and Pakistan. Data were obtained from 367 top-level executives in Australia and 367 from Pakistan using paper-based and online surveys.

Findings

The results highlight significant cross-country differences, indicating that entrepreneurial SMEs in Pakistan tend to overlook the creation of an enabling work environment favourable for innovation, which reduces the positive impact on organisational performance. In contrast, Australian SMEs exhibit a stronger alignment between innovation and performance outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

The study makes a theoretical contribution by extending RBV theory within the contexts of design leadership, workplace innovation and SME performance, particularly in comparative international settings.

Practical implications

The findings offer actionable strategies for SME leaders, particularly in developing economies, highlighting the significance of encouraging internal abilities such as a conducive innovation culture. This could model strategic development and training schemes designed to achieve sustainable competitive advantage through improved organisational performance.

Originality/value

This study uniquely reveals the differential mediating effect of workplace innovation on the design leadership–performance nexus in developed versus developing countries. The absence of significant mediation in Pakistan stresses the distinct entrepreneurial underlying forces and challenges faced by SMEs in developing economies.
