Abstract
Purpose
This paper intends to explore the significant growth and multifaceted benefits of e-learning within the technology sector in Middle Tennessee, particularly in the transformative context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It seeks to highlight the fundamental shift from traditional training methods to e-learning modalities and emphasize the potential of e-learning to revolutionize technical skill development and expand learning opportunities in the post-pandemic era.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employs a comprehensive review of existing literature to glean insights into the use and effectiveness of e-learning in the technology industry, particularly within Middle Tennessee. It synthesizes research findings to understand the growing preference for e-learning and online self-directed training as primary methods for technical skill development in the technology sector.
Findings
The literature review reveals a growing trend toward e-learning in the technology industry, driven by its flexibility, accessibility, and ability to rapidly update training materials. E-learning is increasingly integrated into academic programs related to technology, preparing students for the evolving job market. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the necessity for adaptable and resilient training methods, reinforcing the pivotal role of e-learning in the industry.

Purpose
This paper aims to explore the growing integration of social media, specifically Snapchat, into workplace environments and its impact on communication behaviors, especially among Generation Z and Millennials. The focus is on analyzing how Snapchat’s communication cycles, such as notifications, Snap streaks and best friend rankings, affect workplace efficiency. This study also investigates how cultural variations around connectivity and work-life balance amplify or mitigate these effects in global settings.
Design/methodology/approach
This research uses social comparison theory and self-determination theory to examine the psychological and social impacts of Snapchat’s features on workplace productivity. Drawing on qualitative and quantitative literature, the paper explores how different cultural contexts influence employees’ interaction with Snapchat during work hours. Theoretical frameworks are applied to understand the cognitive and social disruptions caused by social media, while practical strategies for human resource management are explored.
Findings
Snapchat’s design fosters continuous user engagement, often leading to fragmented attention and reduced productivity, particularly in work environments. Cultural norms surrounding social media usage and work-life boundaries either intensify or alleviate the disruptive effects of Snapchat. For example, the pressure to maintain social ties amplifies workplace distractions in collectivist cultures. This paper aims to explore “rotting” in the workplace, characterized by antisocial hibernation, where employees become isolated and disengaged. The study examines underlying factors and provides actionable insights and practical interventions to address “rotting” and restore a healthy work environment, empowering readers with the means to make positive changes.
Design/methodology/approach
The research integrates various theories of employee behavior, including Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the job demands-resources model, cognitive load theory, distraction-conflict theory and engagement theory. By connecting these frameworks with practical HR strategies, the paper ensures a comprehensive understanding of employee isolation, instilling confidence in the research’s depth.
Findings
Employee isolation and disengagement significantly challenge organizational health and productivity. The study identifies key factors such as poor management practices, lack of social support, high job demands and inadequate communication channels. This paper explores the cognitive impacts of social media on employees in workplace environments, focusing on how digital interactions disrupt cognitive functions and employee engagement. It bridges theoretical models of cognitive psychology with practical human resource (HR) strategies to mitigate these effects.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology includes a review of relevant cognitive and psychological theories – namely cognitive load theory (Sweller, 1988), distraction-conflict theory (Baron, 1986), and engagement theory (Schaufeli et al., 2002). The discussion extends to practical interventions such as policy adjustments, employee training and technological solutions, assessing their application within organizational contexts to address social media challenges.

Additionally, the paper will delve into the various WBL programs offered in Tennessee, such as K-12 Career and Technical Education (CTE), Tennessee Chamber Work-based Learning, and more, that are designed to provide individuals of all ages and stages with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workforce. The paper will also discuss how the growth in WBL opportunities has led to an increasing need for new hires and how it could lead to the development of new industry in Tennessee. The paper aims to provide a detailed examination of the economic boom in Tennessee, and the impact of WBL opportunities on the development of local workforce and industry.

Purpose
This study investigates healthcare administration students’ perspectives on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in fluid healthcare work environments, focusing on its potential impact on future healthcare practices.
Design/methodology/approach
The research utilizes a mixed-methods strategy, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to collect data from healthcare administration students at a mid-sized urban university. This comprehensive approach allows for an in-depth analysis of students’ understanding of, attitudes toward and expectations of AI in healthcare settings.
Findings
Results reveal that students have a nuanced understanding of AI’s capabilities to enhance healthcare operations and patient care, showcasing readiness to adopt these technologies. Nonetheless, there are significant concerns about job security and the depersonalization of care with the integration of AI. The study highlights the critical need for healthcare curricula to evolve to incorporate AI training that equips future professionals to use these technologies in increasingly flexible work settings.
Originality/value
This research offers new perspectives on how future healthcare professionals view AI integration within evolving work arrangements. The paper provides a conceptual analysis grounded in existing literature and theoretical frameworks, including uses and gratifications theory, social comparison theory and attention economy theory. Using a conceptual approach, this paper draws on existing literature, theories and case studies to analyze the implications of remote work for organizational culture. It examines the practical applications of theoretical frameworks such as Kotter's 8-Step Change Model, the Competing Values Framework, Social Exchange Theory, Role Theory, Self-Determination Theory and Equity Theory.
