Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of the wall thickness, deposition orientation and two different post-processing methods on the local mechanical properties and microstructure of additively manufactured parts made of maraging steel. In order to examine the local properties of the build, miniaturized testing specimens were employed. Before application of small-sized specimens, their performance was verified.

Design/methodology/approach

The investigation was composed of two stages. As first, the part thickness, specimen size and orientation were studied on a laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) platform with deposited walls of various thicknesses made of maraging steel. Subsequently, the influence of different heat-treatment methods was investigated on the final product, i.e. impellers. The miniaturized and standard tensile tests were performed to investigate the local mechanical properties. The porosity, microstructures and fracture surfaces were analysed by X-ray-computed tomography, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with electron backscatter diffraction.

Findings

The results revealed good agreement between the values provided by miniaturized and standard specimens. The thinnest parts produced had the largest pores and the highest scatter of elongation values. In these cases, also the sub-contour porosity was observed. Part thickness affected pores’ size and results repeatability but not total porosity. The two-step heat-treatment (solutionizing and age-hardening) exhibited the highest yield and ultimate tensile strength.

Practical implications

The microstructure and local mechanical properties were studied on L-PBF platform with deposited walls of various thicknesses. Subsequently, a detailed analysis was conducted on real components (impellers) made of maraging steel, commonly used in tooling, automotive and aerospace industries.

Originality/value

The broadly understood quality of manufactured parts is crucial for their reliable and long-lasting operation. The findings presented in the manuscript allow the readers better understanding of the connection between deposition parameters, post-processing, microstructure and mechanical performance of additive manufacturing-processed parts.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper presents a wide range of post processing heat treatment cycles performed to Electron Beam Melted (EBM) Ti6Al4V alloy and establishes correlations of heat treat process to microstructure and mechanical property (microhardness). The research also identifies the optimal heat treatment to obtain the best microstructure and mechanical properties (hardness and tensile).

Design/methodology/approach

Rectangular bars fabricated using EBM was used to study the different heat treatment cycles. A variety of heat treatments from sub ß-transus, super ß-transus, near ß-transus and solution aircool plus ageing were designed. After the heat treatment process, the samples were analysed for, α lath width, prior ß grain size, microhardness and nanohardness. Tensile tests were done for the heat treated samples showing most refined α lath structure with uniform globular grains.

Findings

A clear correlation was observed between α lath width and the microhardness values. The solution aircooled plus aged samples exhibited the best refinement in α-ß morphology with uniform equiaxed grains. The tensile properties of the solution aircooled plus aged samples were comparable to that of the EBM printed samples and better than ASTMF1472 specifications.

Originality/value

There is hardly any prior work related to post processing heat treatment of EBM built Ti6Al4V other than HIP treatments. The variety of heat treatment cycles and its influence in microstructure and properties, studied in this research, gives a clear understanding on how to tailor final microstructures and select the optimal heat treatment process.

Abstract

Purpose

The need for studying the effects of cannibalization and its importance has been established in the literature, especially, since an assessment of the expected cannibalization effect of a new product can help in deciding on suitable times for new product introduction and promotions. However, quantitative measures that can be easily monitored and interpreted are not commonly available.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses parametric measures to help identify and investigate the effects of cannibalization. It proposes a predictive framework that may be used to investigate the effects of cannibalization. A case study, with real data from a consumer beverage company, illustrates the practical applicability of the model.

Findings

The parametric measures developed helped to identify the level of product cannibalization at the product, product group, family and brand levels in the portfolio.

Originality/value

Marketing strategists who can identify the victims of cannibalization in the product portfolio will be better prepared for the effects of cannibalization.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the case study, the students will be able to conceptualize the importance of brand differentiation; suggest the implications of brand differentiation in the context of the traditional Chikan art form; examine the aspect of a brand’s product portfolio management; and critically analyse the competitive advantages of the brand using the VRIO framework.

Case overview/synopsis

The Chikankari art form gained worldwide recognition. In fact, it also received a geographical indication (GI) tag which is important for international branding. The case is centred around an entrepreneur, Mr. Vinod Punjabi, who redefined the essence of the existing Chikan art form by value addition in terms of intricate designs, patterns and exclusivity. He founded the brand Ada in 2015 aimed at preserving the traditional art form while curating elegance and exclusivity in its product portfolio. The case outlined Punjabi’s journey. The protagonist carefully analysed the open and unorganized Chikankari market and adopted the strategy of brand differentiation to stand apart from the competitors. Punjabi’s daughter, the chief operations officer of Ada, described the aspects. The journey was arduous, but over the years, Ada emerged as a successful name in the Chikankari market. The brand’s intent of becoming synonymous with Chikankari was successful owing to its authentic and exclusive hand-crafted products in the competitive environment of machine-made replicas. Furthermore, the brand also consistently worked on the aesthetic appearance of its store to attract a wide range of customers. Punjabi ensured that the brand was an amalgamation of all the essential elements for its survival in the long run.

Complexity academic level

The case is aimed for students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration/diploma in management, marketing and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, it will assist the management trainees in gaining valuable insights.

Abstract

Purpose

Safety-related issues are prominent in dyeing workplaces and studios that result in accidents. The purpose of this study is to investigate the compliance towards health safety practices by students at the dyeing studios in selected universities in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured online questionnaire was developed and used to collect 285 responses from students studying at the textile and fashion department of ten universities in Ghana. The study used the partial least square (PLS) algorithm of the structural equational modelling (SEM) by bootstrapping with 5,000 samples in the SmartPLS-SEM version 4.0.

Findings

Students exhibited good attitudes with significant knowledge regarding health safety hazards at the dyeing studio. Results revealed that students’ attitudes significantly and positively affect their knowledge of health safety hazards; hence, as attitude increases, their knowledge of health safety hazards also increases. However, institutional support significantly and negatively affects the knowledge of health safety hazards by students at the dyeing studio. Subsequently, institutional support significantly and positively affects students’ attitudes towards health safety hazards at the dyeing studio; hence, as institutional support increases, their attitude towards health safety hazards also increases. In the moderation analysis, results showed that students’ attitude dampens the negative relationship between institutional support and student’s knowledge.

Practical implications

Work-related safety at the dyeing studios is very important to help drive for an injurious free hands-on practice with dyeing activities. Hence, the findings of this study call on institutions to provide appropriate personal protective equipments and first aid kits, effective training and supervision for workspace safety at the dyeing studios for students. This would go a long way to maintain good health safety practices during students’ dyeing activities at the studio, hence eliminating possible hazards.

Originality/value

The present study provides an in-depth understanding of how key variables such as institutional support influence the knowledge and attitude of students towards studio dyeing practices. Key findings from the study reiterated the importance of training workshops, state-of-the-art studios and adherence to safety by students to prevent injuries.

Abstract

Purpose

The knowledge of the heat transfer coefficient is important for the proper design of heat exchangers as well as for the determination of the working medium outlet temperatures. This paper aims to present a method of simultaneous determination of coefficients in correlation formulas for the Nusselt number on both sides of the heat transfer surface.

Design/methodology/approach

The idea of the developed method is based on determining such a values of the coefficients in Nusselt number correlations that fulfill the condition of equality between the measured and calculated temperature at the outlet of heat exchanger in terms of least squares method. To test the proposed method, a special experimental installation was built. The heat transfer in helically coiled tube-in-tube heat exchanger was examined for the wide range of temperature changes and volumetric flow rates of working fluid.

Findings

The simulation results were validated with an experimental data. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the counter-current is higher than the co-current flow in helically coiled heat exchanger. This phenomenon can be beneficial particularly in the laminar flow regime.

Research limitations/implications

The correlation for the Nusselt number as a function of the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers for hot and cold liquid was obtained with the least squares method for the experimental data.

Practical implications

The presented method allows for the simultaneous determination of heat transfer coefficient on both sides of the wall without the necessity of indirect calculation of the overall heat transfer coefficient. The presented method can be used in the thermal design of various type heat exchangers.

Originality/value

This work presents the new methodology of determination correlations for the helically coiled tube-in-tube heat exchanger for co-current and counter-current arrangement, which can be used in thermal design.

Abstract

Since the spread of mass education around the world in the mid- to late-twentieth century, teacher quality has been heralded as the key factor to improve education quality nationwide. National education systems worldwide are also engaged in ongoing and often high stakes cross-national comparisons. As a result, policy-makers and educators in most national education systems are looking at and implementing new ways to improve education overall by raising teacher quality levels, and India is no exception. In India, teacher quality is publicly blamed for both perceived low education quality and demonstrated low average student performance, especially following Indian students’ performance on the 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment. Indian education policy-makers are, therefore, looking at teacher quality as a key factor to improve student performance. Little is known about the impact or implementation of Indian policy frameworks on teacher quality and associated student outcomes in India. This introductory chapter identifies and analyzes various measures of teacher quality and how teacher quality varies in India both in response to and in spite of national policies related to teacher quality. It begins by providing evidence regarding the global importance of teacher quality on student outcomes and then addresses the ambiguity of the term “teacher quality.” This chapter then briefly discussed national education policy in India and the role teacher quality has played in these national policies, especially in the early twenty-first century, including NCF 2005, NCFTE 2009, Draft NPE 2016, Draft NPE 2019, and NPE 2020.
