Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the paper is to propose some modifications to the SIMPLE (semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations) algorithm. These modifications can ensure the numerical robustness and optimize computational efficiency. They remarkably promote the ability of the SIMPLE algorithm for incompressible DNS (direct numerical simulation) of multiscale problems, such as transitional flows and turbulent flows, by improving the properties of dispersion and dissipation.
Design/methodology/approach
The MDCD (minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation) scheme and MMIM (modified momentum interpolation method) are introduced. Six typical test cases are used to validate the modified algorithm, including the linear convective flow, lid-driven cavity flow, laminar boundary layer, Taylor vortex and DHIT (decaying homogenous isotropic turbulence). Particularly, a highly unsteady DNS of separated-flow transition in turbomachinery is precisely predicted by the modified algorithm.
Findings
The numerical examples show the distinct superiority of the modified algorithm in both internal flows and external flows. The advantages of the MDCD scheme and MMIM make the SIMPLE algorithm a promising method for DNS.
Originality/value
Some effective modifications to the SIMPLE algorithm are addressed. It is the first attempt to introduce the MDCD approach into the SIMPLE-type algorithms. The new algorithm is especially suitable for the incompressible DNS of convection-dominated flows.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to numerically investigate the mildly separated flow phenomena on a near-stall NACA0015 airfoil, by using Detached-Eddy Simulation (DES) type methods. It includes a comparison of different choices of underlying Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes model as well as subgrid-scale stress model in Large-Eddy simulation mode.
Design/methodology/approach
The unsteady flow phenomena are simulated by using delayed DES (DDES) and improved DDES (IDDES) methods, with an in-house computational fluid dynamics solver. Characteristic frequencies in different flow regions are extracted using fast Fourier transform. Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method is applied to uncover the critical dynamic modes.
Findings
Among all the DES type methods investigated in this paper, only the Spalart–Allmaras-based IDDES captures the separation point as measured in the experiments. The classical vortex-shedding and the shear-layer flapping modes for airfoil flows with shallow separation are also found from the IDDES results by using DMD.
Originality/value
The value of this paper lies in the assessment of five different DES-type models through the detailed investigation of the Reynolds stresses as well as the separation and reattachment.

Abstract
Purpose
In this investigation, a linear encoder system based on the ultrasonic transducer has been proposed. Ultrasonic transducers are usually designed for distance measurements, such as the time of flight method and sonar system. These applications are defined as discrete-length measurement technologies. The purpose of this study is to develop a continuous displacement measurement system using ultrasonic transducers.
Design/methodology/approach
A modified signal processing based on heterodyne signaling is implemented in this system. In the proposed signal processing, there is an automatic gain control module, a phase-shifting module, a phase detection module, an interpolation module and especially a frequency multiplication module, which can enhance the resolution and reduce the interpolation error simultaneously.
Findings
The proposed system can generate the encoding signals and is compatible with most motion control systems. For the experimental result, the maximum measurement error and standard deviation are about −0.027 and 0.048 mm, respectively. It shows that the proposed encoder system has the potential for displacement measurement tasks.
Originality/value
This study reveals an ultrasonic linear encoder that is capable of generating an incremental encoding signal, accompanied by a corresponding signal processing methodology. In contrast to the conventional heterodyne signal processing approach, the proposed multiplication method effectively reduces the interpolation error that arises because of multiple reflections.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between spirituality, including religious spirituality (i.e. supernatural beliefs) and secular spirituality (i.e. social beliefs), and mental health among police trainees.
Design/methodology/approach
Participants in this study were police trainees of a police academy. An online survey was conducted to measure spirituality and mental health among these police trainees. The association between spirituality and mental health was analyzed using hierarchical linear regression and hierarchical logistic regression with demographic variables (i.e. gender and age) controlled for.
Findings
The results revealed that the police trainees with stronger secular spirituality tended to have better general mental health. Higher levels of secular spirituality were significantly associated with lower levels of mental illness risk and suicidal ideation. By contrast, religious spirituality was not significantly related to police trainees' mental health.
Originality/value
The present study is the first to empirically investigate the relationship between spirituality and mental health among police trainees. The findings may be enlightening for future research on the mental health of police officers and trainees, and provide novel perspectives and pragmatic implications for the development of spirituality-based prevention strategies and intervention programs for enhancing the mental health and well-being of the police.

Purpose
This paper aims to collect and compile the historical data of Guanfu Salt Farm, officially built by the Song Dynasty (960–1279) within modern Hong Kong territories, to reconstruct its history for the reflection of Hong Kong society of the time.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is largely based on identification and analysis of historical documents, including keyword search on electronic databases and verification with the original sources, with reference to archaeological findings when necessary.
Findings
This paper reconstructs the history of Guanfu Salt Farm based on documentary sources with reference to archaeological findings. English translation of Chinese sources is also provided when necessary.
Originality/value
There has been an absence of systematic compilation of historical data of Hong Kong during the Song Dynasty, which are limited in quantity and scattered across different sources. This paper seeks to fill the vacuum of knowledge about pre-colonial Hong Kong, with a more comprehensive reconstruction of the history of Guanfu Salt Farm.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose robust optimization models addressing the container slot allocation problem with minimum quantity commitment (MQC) under uncertain demand, which is faced by international companies export to USA.
Design/methodology/approach
A novel robust optimization approach handling linear programming (LP) with right-hand-side uncertainty is developed by incorporating new parameters: uncertainty level, infeasibility tolerance and reliability level. Two types of uncertainty, namely, bounded uncertainty and symmetric uncertainty are considered, respectively.
Findings
The present work finds that the expected revenue increases as the uncertainty level and the MQC decrease, as well as the infeasibility tolerance and the reliability level increase, no matter which type of uncertainty is considered.
Research limitations/implications
Typically, the capacity constraints in a container shipping model should include two major restrictions: (1) number of slots and (2) total weight of loaded and empty containers. However, this study only addresses the first restriction for simplicity. It is recommended that future research explore the optimal solutions with additional restriction (2).
Originality/value
This paper fills a theoretical and practical gap for the problem of slot allocation with MQC in container liner revenue management. Deterministic and tractable mixed integer LP is formulated to derive robust solutions which immunes to demand uncertainty. Illustrative examples are presented to test the proposed models. The present work provides practical and solid advice and examples which demonstrates the application of the proposed robust optimization approach for logistics managers.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a system for accurately measuring drilling force in the printed circuit board micro drilling process and to characterize the drilling force to provide a better understanding of the micro drilling process.
Design/methodology/approach
The drilling force measurement system was established first. Then the drilling force in printed circuit board micro drilling process was characterized experimentally. In particular, the drilling forces in drilling halogen‐free and lead‐free assembly compatible printed circuit boards and the drilling force characteristics in ultra small hole drilling were investigated.
Findings
A drilling force measurement system, with the key component of a KISTLER 9256C2 dynamometer, can accurately measure the drilling forces in the printed circuit board micro drilling process. The micro drilling process can be characterized by drilling force. Meanwhile, drilling force is very sensitive to drill breakage and drilling force can be utilized to detect drill breakage in the micro drilling process.
Originality/value
The paper presents a system for accurately measuring the drilling force. Drilling force provides fundamental information for the optimal design of micro drill bits. Drilling force can also characterize the micro drilling process, especially the ultra small hole micro drilling process.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to introduce a compelling customer value score method (CVSM), which is applicable for different product categories, and elaborates customer values in three components (direct economic value, depth of direct economic value and breadth of the indirect economic value) throughout three stages of customer journey.
Design/methodology/approach
This study collected data from the Internet-shopping platforms, namely Taobao and T-Mall from 2019 to 2020 with particular focus on three product categories: lipstick (fast-moving consumer goods), mobile phones (durable goods) and alcohol (a hybrid of the other two product types) from 37 selected firms. The CVSM employs an entropy-based multiple criteria analysis, of which the weight of each indictor is not fixed artificially, but computed by the entropy-based method that calculates informative differences among the indicators (profit, revenue, positive reviews, search index and likes and favorites).
Findings
The result shows that product categories and market status have a moderation effect on three components in customer values. The findings suggested marketing strategies for different consumer goods, where the fast-moving consumer goods like lipstick should focus on the pre-purchase stage while the durable goods should emphasize post-purchase stage when the market is rapidly changing.
Originality/value
The study brings new insights to Kumar’s customer value theory by integrating product categories and the market status, revealing that three components of customer values differ in their contributions to the whole customer values. This paper further contributed managerial suggestions for marketers with regards to three stages of customer journey.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristic flow structures behind a backward-facing step. With better understanding of unsteady features, effective control practice with harmonic actuation is illustrated.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study employs Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation to resolve flow turbulence with a finite-volume approach on structured grid mesh. The coherent structure is displayed through temporal- and spatial-evolution of pressure fluctuations. Characteristic frequencies in different flow regions are extracted using fast Fourier transform. Dynamic mode decomposition method is applied to uncover the critical dynamic modes.
Findings
The time- and spanwise-averaged quantities agree well with experimental data. It is observed that two distinct modes exist: shear layer mode and shedding mode. The former is related to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability mechanism, vortex pairing and step mode with non-dimensional frequency, Sth,st at around 0.2. The latter is of multi-scale, with a typical coherent structure shedding frequency, Sth,st at 0.074. Step mode interacts with shedding mode in the reattachment region, resulting in the low-frequency characteristics.
Originality/value
An optimal excitation frequency to reduce recirculation bubble length is obtained at about Sth,st=0.2 with an explanation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to verify the feasibility and reliability of mineral casting applied in high-precision printed circuit board (PCB) drilling machine. The mechanical properties of machine frame are quantified to provide a solution for machine tool industry to seek a perfect substance competing with classic materials such as cast iron and granite.
Design/methodology/approach
The optimal design of machine frame is performed via the CAD system combined with finite element analysis (FEA). The mechanical properties of the frame elements are evaluated by a series of mechanical experiments: static performance is quantified by flatness tests, dynamic behavior is estimated by experimental and numerical models, respectively. Meanwhile, the performance of the frame element with traditional materials is examined experimentally.
Findings
Mineral casting parts can be successfully applied to PCB drilling machine to meet high accuracy requirements. The characteristic of mineral casing gives the most possibilities in structural design. The frame parts show good static/dynamic behaviors by structural optimization processes. Especially, the machine frame with mineral casting gains a great weight reduction compared with traditional materials.
Originality/value
The application of mineral casting in PCB drilling machine offers greater design flexibility and innovative system solutions. The combination of FEA is convincing to achieve optimal structure and ideal weight to maximize the economic and technical benefits. Moreover, lightweight design of machine structural components achieves not only higher kinematic/dynamic precision but also considerable cost reduction.
