Abstract

A new method of studying the accelerated ageing of interconnection materials is applied to a high‐stability thick film resistor system (the Du Pont HS‐80 system). The new method, referred to hereafter as the in‐situ method, allows measurement of the electrical resistance of a thick film resistor to a resolution of a few ppm during accelerated ageing. With the in‐situ technique, the electrical resistance measurements are performed at the elevated ageing temperature during the ageing treatment, whereas with the conventional ageing method the resistance measurements are carried out at room temperature, between subsequent annealing steps. The measuring resolution obtainable with the in‐situ method is orders of magnitude better than with the conventional method. The ageing kinetics can therefore be studied on a shorter time scale and in greater detail than with the conventional method. In this paper, the authors use the in‐situ method to study the accelerated ageing of the Du Pont HS‐80 thick film resistor system, encapsulated with a proper glaze. It will be shown that kinetics of the resistance drift observed in this system cannot be described by an Arrhenius‐type equation. The ageing data can only be interpreted in terms of a kinetic model incorporating a spectrum of activation energies for the ageing process. Such a model is given, and is shown to provide a good explanation of the observed ageing behaviour. The physical process that causes the observed ageing is most probably diffusion of silver from the contacting terminals into the amorphous matrix of the thick film resistor.

Abstract

Although the use of ultrasonic agitation on quartz crystal devices during PCB cleaning has long been suspected to be detrimental, little or no data exist to substantiate or quantify the resultant effects. This paper summarises the results of a limited study into these effects for a range of quartz crystal devices, using both CFC and aqueous solvents. The variations with exposure time, and the types and mechanisms of failure are discussed. The results are encouraging and suggest that, although these devices are more susceptible to damage than ICs, once manufacturing defects have been screened out they will withstand ultrasonic exposure without deleterious effects for periods several times longer than those used for cleaning PCBs.

Abstract

Purpose

The performance of oil-filled pressure cores is very much affected by the corrugated diaphragm and the oil filling volume. The purpose of this paper is to show the effects of different corrugated diaphragms, different oil filling volumes and different treatments of the corrugated diaphragms on the performance of pressure sensors.

Design/methodology/approach

Pressure-sensitive cores with different diaphragm diameters, different diaphragm ripple numbers and different oil filling volumes are produced, and thermal cycling is introduced to improve the diaphragm performance, and finally the performance of each pressure-sensitive core is tested and the test data are analyzed and compared.

Findings

The experimental results show that the larger the diameter of the corrugated diaphragm used for encapsulation, the better the performance. For pressure-sensitive cores using smaller diameter corrugated diaphragms, the performance of one corrugation is better than that of two corrugations. When the number of corrugations and the diameter are the same size, the performance of the outer ring of the diaphragm with concave corrugations is better than that with convex corrugations. At the same time, the diaphragm after thermal cycling treatment and appropriate reduction of encapsulated oil filling can improve the performance of the pressure-sensitive core.

Originality/value

By exploring the effects of corrugated diaphragm and oil filling volume on the performance of oil-filled pressure cores, the design of oil-filled pressure sensors can be guided to improve sensor performance.

Abstract

The independent shopkeeper in France has always played a very important role, and historically they have been supported — if only in theory — by government intervention. Hypermarkets began to develop in France in the early 1960s and it was not long before their increasing share of total retail trade began to alarm the smaller operators. In 1973 the Loi Royer, which attempted to restrict hypermarket expansion beyond certain limits, was introduced. Has it had any effect? Or has the slowing down in hypermarkets in France has been due to a number of other causes? Steve Burt suggests that the law may not have had the restrictive effect that was expected. Any decline in the number of large units opened may be attributable to changing economic conditions and organisational trends.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine both analytically and numerically the solution to a new one-dimensional equation for the propagation of small-amplitude waves in shallow waters that accounts for linear and nonlinear drift, diffusive attenuation, viscosity and dispersion, its dependence on the initial conditions, and its linear stability.

Design/methodology/approach

An implicit, finite difference method valid for both parabolic and second-order hyperbolic equations has been used to solve the equation in a truncated domain for five different initial conditions, a nil initial first-order time derivative and relaxation times linearly proportional to the viscosity coefficient.

Findings

A fast transition that depends on the coefficient of the linear drift, the diffusive attenuation and the power of the nonlinear drift are found for initial conditions corresponding to the exact solution of the generalized regularized long-wave equation. For initial Gaussian, rectangular and triangular conditions, the wave’s amplitude and speed increase as both the amplitude and the width of these conditions increase and decrease, respectively; wide initial conditions evolve into a narrow leading traveling wave of the pulse type and a train of slower oscillatory secondary ones. For the same initial mass and amplitude, rectangular initial conditions result in larger amplitude and velocity waves of the pulse type than Gaussian and triangular ones. The wave’s kinetic, potential and stretching energies undergo large changes in an initial layer whose thickness is on the order of the diffusive attenuation coefficient.

Originality/value

A new, one-dimensional equation for the propagation of small-amplitude waves in shallow waters is proposed and studied analytically and numerically. The equation may also be used to study the displacement of porous media subject to seismic effects, the dispersion of sound in tunnels, the attenuation of sound because of viscosity and/or heat and mass diffusion, the dynamics of second-order, viscoelastic fluids, etc., by appropriate choices of the parameters that appear in it.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reexamine the stock price drifts after open-market stock repurchase announcements by differentiating actual repurchases from repurchase announcements and by controlling for the repurchasing firms’ earnings improvement in the announcement year relative to the prior year.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the calendar-time method and matching method based on different criteria to calculate the post-announcement abnormal returns.

Findings

The results show that only firms actually repurchasing their shares exhibit a positive post-announcement drift. More importantly, the authors find that these repurchasing firms have the same post-announcement drift as their matching firms that have similar size and earnings performance but do not repurchase. This supports the argument that the post-repurchase announcement drift found in previous studies is not a distinct anomaly but the post-earnings announcement drift in disguise.

Social implications

The post-repurchase announcement drift found in previous studies is the post-earnings announcement drift in disguise.

Originality/value

The study shows that because high earnings performance positively relates to real repurchase activities, controlling for earnings performance in examining whether a drift occurs after repurchase announcements.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyze the effectiveness of long period supplementary zone rules that can simultaneously increase chart sensitivity to small process drift and not significantly increase the false alarm rate.

Design/methodology/approach

A stable, on‐target process was simulated and drift induced into the process. The rates of drift varied from 0.03σ to .0003σ per subgroup measurement. A total of 613 different supplementary zone rules were implemented in conjunction with the three‐sigma limiting rule. For each combination, 100,000 observations were simulated and the effect on the false alarm rate and increase in chart sensitivity estimated. An effectiveness measure was developed to relate false alarm rate to chart sensitivity.

Findings

A total of 87 rules were uncovered which effectively detected a wide range of process drifts. When the increase in chart sensitivity is discounted by the false alarm rate, 13 rules increased chart sensitivity by over 10 percent. These rules were based on longer rather than shorter rule length.

Research limitations/implications

The effective rules discovered form a nonlinear pattern in the space the examined rules define. This indicates a direction for future research outside the scope of this study. These rules are also easy to implement in existing Shewhart chart applications where the process drifts at an unknown rate.

Originality/value

While supplementary trend rules have been studied in the past, the extension to zone rules has not been made. This study begins to fill that void and indicates the direction for future efforts in the area.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether limited attention leads to the market underreaction to earnings announcement and 10‐K filings.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an empirical study involving statistical analysis of a large sample of data, obtained from Compustat, CRSP and Xignite Inc. Both portfolio analysis and multivariate regressions are used in hypotheses testing.

Findings

The following key findings are presented in the paper. First, we show that among large firms, investors under‐react more to the information contained in 10‐K filings than earnings announcements. Second, underreaction to earnings announcements tends to be stronger for small firms than large firms. Third, we find that companies report their earnings and 10‐Ks earlier when there is a higher demand for such information, and document a negative relationship between the degree of underreaction and the timeliness of such information release. Finally, we show that the recent ruling by SEC to accelerate 10‐K filing has little impact on the degree of investors' underreaction to 10‐K information.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study suggest that investors' failure to devote enough attention to an economic event leads to underreaction, and the degree of underreaction is negatively correlated with the amount of investor attention.

Practical implications

Investors need to periodically reassess the informational contents of economic events, and allocate their attention accordingly, in order to avoid underreaction.

Originality/value

This study analyzes and the roles of limited attention in determining the degree of investor underreaction to earnings announcement and 10‐K filings. The comparison of the two related but distinct financial reporting events yields interesting insights.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to improve shearer positioning accuracy. Shearer positioning using an inertial navigation system (INS) is a highly useful technology; however, positioning accuracy is seriously hindered by INS attitude error, particularly heading drift.

Design/methodology/approach

A shearer positioning model with double-INS based on extended Kalman filter was proposed. The constant distance between two INSs (INS 1 and INS 2) was selected as the observation vector. Allan variance was used to identify the noise type of the vertical-axis gyroscope, and the stochastic process of heading drift for two INSs was obtained and divided into incongruous drift and concurrent drift.

Findings

Simulation was then carried out to determine the optimal arrangement of the two INSs. For incongruous drift, the optimal arrangement satisfied the condition that the line connecting INS 1 and INS 2 was perpendicular to the shearer lateral axis (in the shearer coordinate frame) and parallel to the east-north plane (in the east-north-up coordinate frame). Under optimal arrangement, the positioning accuracy increased against the distance between INS 1 and INS 2. For concurrent drift, the double-INS positioning model had no effect. Under the circumstances, the number of INSs should be increased so that the uncertainty of INS drift was reflected as much as possible.

Originality/value

A new double-INS positioning model was proposed with the constant distance between the two INSs. The optimal arrangement for double-INS was obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a high-precision attitude solution to solve the attitude drift problem caused by the dispersion of low-cost micro-electro-mechanical system devices in strap-down inertial navigation attitude solution of micro-quadrotor.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a three-stage attitude estimation scheme that combines data preprocessing, gyro drifts prediction and enhanced unscented Kalman filtering (UKF) is proposed. By introducing a preprocessing model, the quaternion orientation is calculated as the composition of two algebraic quaternions, and the decoupling feature of the two quaternions makes the roll and pitch components independent of magnetic interference. A novel real-time based on differential value (DV) estimation algorithm is proposed for gyro drift. This novel solution prevents the impact of quartic characteristics and uses the iterative method to meet the requirement of real-time applications. A novel attitude determination algorithm, the pre-process DV-UKF algorithm, is proposed in combination with UKF based on the above solution and its characteristics.

Findings

Compared to UKF, both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the pre-process DV-UKF algorithm has higher reliability in attitude determination. The dynamic errors in the three directions of the attitude are below 2.0°, the static errors are all less than 0.2° and the absolute attitude errors tailored by average are about 47.98% compared to the UKF.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an identified need to achieve high-precision attitude estimation when using low-cost inertial devices in micro-quadrotor. The accuracy of the pre-process DV-UKF algorithm is superior to other products in the market.
