Abstract
Purpose
Rice University has adopted the DSpace platform for its institutional repository, but has pushed the traditional limits of how that is defined. To accommodate a wider range of scholarship that includes digitized multimedia source materials integrated with educational modules and geospatial resources, the technical infrastructure of DSpace has been enriched. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the developments and decisions required to support this range of scholarship beyond born‐digital scholarly pre‐prints and reports.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents the Travelers in the Middle East Archive (TIMEA), a digital archive that makes use of DSpace to preserve and present images and texts, as a case study in using DSpace as both a repository and archive framework. TIMEA integrates two additional systems for presenting digital content, Connexions, which focuses on educational modules, and ArcIMS, which makes available dynamic GIS (Geographic Information Systems) maps.
Findings
Although DSpace was originally intended to be an “institutional repository” for born‐digital materials such as scholarly reports, it can also serve as an archive for digitized items such as XML‐encoded texts and digital images. However, making DSpace work as a digital archive for TIMEA has required customization, including building‐in XML support, working with DSpace's flat metadata structure, implementing a customized, XML‐driven user interface using Manakin, and performing additional programming to integrate functionality for GIS and educational modules.
Practical implications
The practical implications of using DSpace as both institutional repository and digital archive have required a number of modifications, including additional functional software development, reworking the metadata structure, redefining repository policies, format access modifications, and customizing the look and feel of the repository.
Originality/value
The discussion in this paper, of the challenges and decisions inherent in using an institutional repository with a digital archive will assist other institutions working to integrate resources as will the portal structure to facilitate harvesting from multiple relevant repositories and direct users to digital resources independent of their native repositories. Likewise, enhancements to DSpace, such as support for XML document presentation, are contributions to the institutional repository community.

IN an address at the dedication of Brooks Library, Brattle‐borough, Mellen Chamberlain made the statement that “before 1700 there was not in Massachusetts, so far as is known, a copy of Shakespeare's or of Milton's poems.” In taking account of the cultural background of colonial America, it is both interesting and instructive to compare this statement with Macaulay's appraisal of seventeenth century England, to the effect that “few of the knights of the shire had libraries as good as may now be found in a servant's hall or in the back parlour of a shop‐keeper. An Esquire passed among his neighbours for a great scholar if Hudibras or Baker's Chronicle, Tarlton's Jests and The Seven Champions of Christendom lay in his hall window among the fishing rods and fowling pieces.” In the light of the foregoing, it is not to be expected that the colonies would produce much by way of literature. As a matter of fact, colonial literature is largely disappointing, but the remarkable thing about it is that there is as much of it as there is, and that it is as good as it is.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to understand the impact of a pilot of the actions against racism (AAR) intervention, aimed at enhancing educators’ multicultural efficacy and attitudes in a mid-Atlantic K-8 charter school.
Design/methodology/approach
AAR included eight sessions delivered over one school year. Experienced facilitators led these sessions, focusing on combating racism, prejudice and discrimination. Of the 84 school staff, 56 completed a baseline survey and 33 completed a postintervention survey.
Findings
Paired sample t-tests revealed a significant increase in multicultural attitudes, t(29) = 2.55, p = 0.016, whereas the increase in multicultural efficacy was not significant, t(28) = 1.93, p = 0.063. The authors examined cultural and emotional intelligence as moderators of the intervention’s impact. Higher baseline cognitive reappraisal scores (an indicator of emotional intelligence) were linked to a larger increase in multicultural efficacy from pre- to postintervention, B = −0.59, t (27) = −2.20, p = 0.037. The number of sessions attended was unrelated to the intervention’s impact.
Research limitations/implications
This study was a single-site, uncontrolled pilot of AAR with a small sample size. Further research in additional settings with appropriately powered samples is needed to validate these results and extend findings to examine the impact of AAR on the student experience.
Originality/value
The study demonstrates the promising potential of AAR in improving teachers' multicultural attitudes and efficacy. Exploratory findings highlight the role of cognitive reappraisal in enhancing multicultural efficacy, contributing valuable insights for designing effective teacher training programs. This research supports the implementation of critical, identity-centered and asset-based pedagogies in education.

Abstract
We document the emergence of the Lead Independent Director (LID) board role in a sample of U.S. firms from 1999–2015. We find that firms that adopt an LID board role are larger and have more independent boards, higher institutional investor holdings, and an NYSE listing. Firms with greater anticipated benefits from monitoring also adopt an LID role, e.g., firms with dual CEO-Chairman, with more takeover defense mechanisms, and with higher cash holdings. Using an event study methodology, we find that investors respond positively to the adoption of an LID board role. Lastly, using instrumental variables to address endogeneity in the LID board role, we find that firms with an LID are more likely to terminate poorly performing CEOs. Taken as a whole, these results suggest that the LID board role enhances firm value and improves the quality of corporate governance.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to investigate how disclosure informativeness of U.S. multinational corporations varies with the informativeness of numbers produced by their financial accounting systems. We predict that firms whose current accounting numbers do not capture well the effects of the firm's current activities and outcomes on shareholder value proxied by earnings timeliness will institute better disclosure systems and improve their disclosure informativeness to compensate for their less informative accounting numbers. Disclosure informativeness is measured by analyst ratings of corporate disclosures provided in the annual volumes of the Report of The Financial Analysts Federation Corporate Information Committee. The informativeness of accounting numbers is proxied by the timeliness of earnings. We investigate whether the analysts' ratings vary with the timeliness of earnings by examining the cross‐sectional relation between properties of earnings timeliness and subsequent analyst ratings of corporate disclosure of 100 firms included in FORBES' survey of the largest U.S. multinationals. The results support a significant negative relation between the timeliness metrics and subsequent values of disclosure informativeness after controlling for other firm characteristics.

Abstract
Purpose – To consider the issues of cognitive freedom and neuropolitics via a comparison of d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) use in the 1960s and the emerging twenty-first century debate about nootropics.
Design/methodology/approach – Drawing upon theoretical concepts from the study of biopolitics and on the tools of narrative policy analysis, this qualitative analysis uses multiple sources from scientific, mass media, regulatory, and the secondary literature.
Findings – LSD use in the 1950s and 1960s caused an unprecedented social confrontation with the consequences of a key sector in society deciding to use synthetic chemicals to alter personality and consciousness in ways that did not necessarily accord with mainstream society. As such, the era contains key lessons that can inform the new debate about neurological enhancement.
Research limitations/implications – The present study provides a starting point and historical context for development of regulatory policy for the coming era of nootropics and cognitive enhancement.
Originality – This chapter analyzes LSD use in the 1950s and 1960s not as a form of moral panic but as a technological adaptation that raised crucial questions about the possibilities and limits of psychedelic citizenship.

Abstract
Existing research argues that repression hindered the ability of local civil rights movements to influence the development of local War on Poverty programs; however, the Virginia civil rights struggle defies this pattern. This comparative county-level study melds institutionalist accounts of welfare state development with an analysis of movement repression in order to explain this paradox. A distinction is made between situational and institutional repression. While scholars focus on the former and its negative impact on mobilization, this study suggests that institutional repression can have the opposite effect, unifying movements and facilitating their influence on the formation and implementation of poverty policy.
