Abstract

Purpose

During metro construction using the shield method, the construction process's complexity, the construction environment's variability, and other factors can easily lead to tunnel construction accidents. This paper aims to explore the interconnections between risk factors and related accident types, as well as the risk chain formed between risk factors, and to analyze the key risk factors and vulnerabilities in shield tunnel construction through empirical data.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the social network analysis theory, the connection of various risk factors in subway shield tunnel construction is explored, and the mechanism of multiple risk factors is studied. Through literature analysis, articles on safety risk factors in metro shield tunnel construction are organized and studied, and the identified safety risk factors can comprehensively reflect the significant risks that need to be concerned in metro shield tunnel construction.

Findings

The results show that a small world characterizes the SNA network of safety risk factors for metro shield tunnel construction: The frequency of association between the five risk factors “unsafe behavior,” “site management,” “safety supervision and inspection,” “safety education system” and “safety protection” is higher than that of other factors. Only a few risks, such as “site management,” “safety supervision and inspection,” and “rapid response capability,” directly lead to accidents. In addition, risk factors such as the “safety education system” and “safety protection” will indirectly cause unsafe behaviors of construction personnel.

Research limitations/implications

During construction, the probability of occurrence of risk factors may vary with the construction phase and area and is not considered in this paper. In addition, although this paper identifies, determines and analyzes the risk factors affecting the safety of metro shield tunnel construction, including the importance of each risk factor and the connection between them, more detailed information before and after the accident could not be obtained based on the accident investigation report alone. Therefore, future research can collect the same accident case from more sources to obtain more information.

Practical implications

The theory of accident causation has been improved at the theoretical level. The identified safety risk factors can comprehensively reflect the significant risks that need to be paid attention to in metro shield tunnel construction. From a practical point of view, the results of the study provide a basis for the rational control of the risk factors in the construction of subway shield tunnels, which can help guide practitioners to do a good job of risk prevention before the construction of metro shield tunnels and reduce the probability of related accidents.

Originality/value

This study expands the application of social network analysis in the field of subway tunnel construction risk, quantitatively analyzes the key risk factors and vulnerabilities in shield method tunnel construction and proposes policy recommendations for future metro tunnel construction safety management.

Abstract

To examine how social media restrict and recreate messages within current interactionist scripts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), this study applies a framework of digital reflexivity highlighting stages of information flow. It applies the symbolic interaction concept of emotional events to analyze the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi and the role of social media in disseminating Bouazizi’s act as one catalyst of the MENA citizen uprisings. The role of social media in the “Arab Spring” merits investigation because social media provide opportunities to examine shifting identities, interactions, and actions of citizen activists in the MENA uprisings. This study is important and timely because little symbolic interactionist scholarship exists on MENA identities and social movements, or on crowd interaction and activism outside the West. The nuanced nature of MENA political activism and complex processes of the development of activists’ “mutable” selves (Zurcher, 1977) are fluid and resistant to symbolically defined social roles, interactionist scripts and reflexivity, and public communication practices in a MENA under political and social transition.

Abstract

Fibre‐reinforced plastic (FRP) materials have been recognised as new innovative materials for concrete rehabilitation and retrofit. Since concrete is poor in tension, a beam without any form of reinforcement will fail when subjected to a relatively small tensile load. Therefore, the bonding of FRP plate to reinforced concrete (RC) structure is an effective solution to increase its overall strength. In such plated beams, tensile forces develop in the bonded plate and these have to be transferred to the original beam via interfacial shear and normal stresses. Consequently, the debonding of FRP plates bonded to reinforced concrete beams is believed to be initiated by the stress concentration in the adhesive layer. Accurate predictions of the interfacial stresses are prerequisite for designing against debonding failures. In the present analysis, a simple theoretical model to estimate shear and normal stresses is proposed, including the variation in FRP plate fibre orientation. The solution shows significant shear and normal stresses concentration at the plates end. A parametrical study is carried out to show the effects of some design variables, e.g., thickness of adhesive layer and FRP plate, and the distance from support to cut ‐ off end of bonded plates.

Abstract

Purpose

A new simple parametric shear deformation theory applicable to isotropic and functionally graded plates is developed. This new theory has five degrees of freedom, provides parabolic transverse shear strains across the thickness direction and hence, it does not need shear correction factor. Moreover, zero-traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate are satisfied rigorously. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Material properties are temperature-dependent and vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution. The plate is assumed to be initially stressed by a temperature rise through the thickness. The energy functional of the system is obtained using Hamilton’s principle. Free vibration frequencies are then calculated using a set of characteristic orthogonal polynomials and by applying Ritz method for different boundary conditions.

Findings

In the light of good performance of the present theory for all boundary conditions considered, it can be considered as an excellent alternative to some two-dimensional (2D) theories for approximating the tedious and time consuming three-dimensional plate problems.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge and according to literature survey, almost all published higher order shear deformation theories have been limited to simply supported boundary conditions and without taking into account the thermal stresses effects. The existing 2D shear deformation theories of Reddy, Karama and Touratier can be easily recovered. Furthermore, this feature can be highly appreciated in an iterative design process where a large number of derived plate models can be tested by selecting only two parameters in a simple polynomial function which is computationally efficient. Finally, new results are presented to show the effect of material variation, and temperature rise on natural frequencies of the FG plate for different boundary conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to solve the problems of big data analytics for prediction including volume, veracity and velocity by improving the prediction result to an acceptable level and in the shortest possible time.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is divided into two parts. The first one is to improve the result of the prediction. In this part, two ideas are proposed: the double pruning enhanced random forest algorithm and extracting a shared learning base from the stratified random sampling method to obtain a representative learning base of all original data. The second part proposes to design a distributed architecture supported by new technologies solutions, which in turn works in a coherent and efficient way with the sampling strategy under the supervision of the Map-Reduce algorithm.

Findings

The representative learning base obtained by the integration of two learning bases, the partial base and the shared base, presents an excellent representation of the original data set and gives very good results of the Big Data predictive analytics. Furthermore, these results were supported by the improved random forests supervised learning method, which played a key role in this context.

Originality/value

All companies are concerned, especially those with large amounts of information and want to screen them to improve their knowledge for the customer and optimize their campaigns.

Abstract

Purpose

Past marketing research has found that hedonic utility is more important for Western cultures, whereas social utility is more important for Eastern cultures, suggesting differential positioning in each culture. However, the research has so far focused on a single choice context of one brand. This paper aims to examine cultural differences in utility importance using two brand choice contexts: single choice and brand selection.

Design/methodology/approach

Four studies (n = 1268) were conducted. Study 1 focused on a single choice context by asking directly about utility importance when choosing a cellphone. Study 2 focused on a brand selection context using conjoint analysis for the same cellphone category used in Study 1. To validate the results of Studies 1 and 2 with the categories of perfume, sports shoes and computers, Study 3 analyzed single and selection contexts using latent regression methods. Finally, Study 4 explored the role of cognitive load in explaining the differences between the two choice contexts using the laptop category.

Findings

The analyses of the brand selection context, which simulates real-life choice, revealed that the importance ascribed to utilities was not idiosyncratic for each culture. In contrast, single-choice contexts demonstrated stereotypical cultural differences.

Originality/value

Positioning a specific utility message to fit the culture stereotype might not be necessary, as it does not always affect brand choice in a competitive environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies that can improve the research and implementation of lean supply chain management (LSCM) and the enhanced LSCM subfields in I4.0 technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a systematic literature review to detect, categorize and assess recent data, highlighting patterns and providing suggestions for potential research in this field, to investigate I4.0 literature and its effect on LSCM. The authors examined 79 published types of research from the Scopus database that were published between 2010 and 2021 and classified them into four LSCM fields: logistics, production, supply chain and marketing.

Findings

The authors can emphasize the fact that the literature on this topic is in progress, from early German academic research to the current creation of new effects around the world. The majority of the potential effects investigated were discovered to improve specific areas that ultimately enhance the practices of the four LSCM domains as well as performance outcomes. The authors were also able to assess the extent to which present and upcoming I4.0 technologies can improve LSCM research and implementation.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of its kind. Although some research looked into various areas of I4.0 and LSCM topics, there has been no research specifically looking into the impact of I4.0 on LSCM. The originality of this study lies in the treatment of the main fields and sub-fields of LSCM, which can benefit from the technologies of I4.0. Academic scholars interested in the research topics may benefit from the findings of this study. Organizations in various industrial sectors, particularly manufacturing, where lean thinking is used, business professionals specialized in lean operations and supply chain management, along with anyone else who wants to learn more about the interrelationships between I4.0 and LSCM.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the attitude cooperation control of multi-spacecraft with in-continuous communication.

Design/methodology/approach

A decentralized state-irrelevant event-triggered control policy is proposed to reduce control updating frequency and further achieve in-continuous communication by introducing a self-triggered mechanism.

Findings

Each spacecraft transmits data independently, without the requirement for the whole system to communicate simultaneously. The local predictions and self-triggered mechanism avoid continuous monitoring of the triggering condition.

Research limitations/implications

This investigation is suitable for small Euler angle conditions.

Practical implications

The control policy based on event-triggered communication can provide potential solutions for saving communication resources.

Originality/value

This investigation uses event- and self-triggered policy to achieve in-communication for the multi-spacecraft system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from a thorough review of the literature, the role of metaverse-based quality 4.0 (MV-based Q4.0) in achieving manufacturing resilience (MFGRES). Based on a categorization of MV-based Q4.0 enabler technologies and MFGRES antecedents, the paper provides a conceptual framework depicting the relationship between both areas while exploring existing knowledge in current literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is structured as a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) at the intersection of MV-based Q4.0 and MFGRES fields. From the Scopus database up to 2023, a final sample of 182 papers is selected based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria that shape the knowledge base of the research.

Findings

In light of the classification of reviewed papers, the findings show that artificial intelligence is especially well-suited to enhancing MFGRES. Transparency and flexibility are the resilience enablers that gain most from the implementation of MV-based Q4.0. Through analysis and synthesis of the literature, the study reveals the lack of an integrated approach combining both MV-based Q4.0 and MFGRES. This is particularly clear during disruptions.

Practical implications

This study has a significant impact on managers and businesses. It also advances knowledge of the importance of MV-based Q4.0 in achieving MFGRES and gaining its full rewards.

Originality/value

This paper makes significant recommendations for academics, particularly those who are interested in the metaverse concept within MFGRES. The study also helps managers by illuminating a key area to concentrate on for the improvement of MFGRES within their organizations. In light of this, future research directions are suggested.
