Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to do the reliability and validity analysis of existing frameworks in lean services through questionnaire survey. Furthermore, it explores the applicability of these frameworks in Indian service sector.
Design/methodology/approach
A questionnaire survey was floated to 423 lean/quality practitioners in four service sectors in India. The questionnaire has two parts where first part was for collecting the demographic information of respondents and the second part assesses the importance of initiatives identified by various scholars/consultants under different frameworks of lean services. The assessment was done on five-point Likert scale.
Findings
The results indicate that majority of services have adopted lean/process improvement methodology for enhancing operational excellence/performance and customer satisfaction. The study finds that all frameworks display a high level of reliability. Only nine out of eighteen lean service frameworks have displayed unidimensionality with respect to the construct, Lean. No generalised framework for lean services is available. Some essential elements such as servicescapes and change management are not present in any framework. Most of the frameworks are sector specific; thus, there is requirement for a suitable lean service framework.
Research limitations/implications
The data were collected only from four sectors in Indian service industry. Future researchers may test these frameworks for other service sectors and country.
Originality/value
This is the first paper empirically validating the lean service frameworks. The findings of the paper will be of value to lean service practitioners. It helps the quality professionals to recognise a suitable lean service framework to implement in their respective organisation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of lean methodology to reduce the turnaround time (TAT) of a clinical laboratory in a super speciality hospital. Delays in report delivery lead to delayed diagnosis increased waiting time and decreased customer satisfaction. The reduction in TAT will lead to increased patient satisfaction, quality of care, employee satisfaction and ultimately the hospital’s revenue.
Design/methodology/approach
The generic causes resulting in increasing TAT of clinical laboratories were identified using lean tools and techniques such as value stream mapping (VSM), Gemba, Pareto Analysis and Root Cause Analysis. VSM was used as a tool to analyze the current state of the process and further VSM was used to design the future state with suggestions for process improvements.
Findings
This study identified 12 major non-value added factors for the hematology laboratory and 5 major non-value added factors for the biochemistry lab which were acting as bottlenecks resulting in limiting throughput. A four-month research study by the authors together with hospital quality department and laboratory staff members led to reduction of the average TAT from 180 to 95minutes in the hematology lab and from 268 to 208 minutes in the biochemistry lab.
Practical implications
Very few improvement initiatives in Indian healthcare are based on industrial engineering tools and techniques, which might be due to a lack of interaction between healthcare and engineering. The study provides a positive outcome in terms of improving the efficiency of services in hospitals and identifies a scope for lean in the Indian healthcare sector.
Social implications
Applying lean in the Indian healthcare sector gives its own potential solution to the problem caused, due to a wide gap between lean accessibility and lean implementation. Lean helped in changing the mindset of an organization toward providing the highest quality of services with faster delivery at an optimal cost.
Originality/value
This paper is an effort to reduce the gap between healthcare and industrial engineering and enhancing the use of lean practices in Indian healthcare. The study is motivated toward implementing lean methodology successfully in services.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of Lean methodology through an exhaustive literature review, and its implications and application in the service industry right from its initiation in 1990s till date.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper summarises the evolution of Lean in services and has systematically classified the reviewed literature in four dimensions, namely time, publisher, region and content. Further under “time” dimension, the literature is classified into Pre-Lean era, Lean awareness era, Lean Exploration era and Lean implementation era. Under the “content” dimension, the categories include theoretical foundation, frameworks/models and application/case studies.
Findings
The analysis inferred; Lean is gaining roads in services, though the research is still at nascent stage. Lean is applicable in services though transfer of Lean manufacturing principles to services has certain limitations because of the characteristics of services. The need is to focus on process difference between services and manufacturing. Respect for people and employment engagement is critical to Lean in service. The authors identified the necessity to standardise the Lean service definition, principles, and tools and to develop guidelines for structured implementation in service industry.
Research limitations/implications
Though multiple databases have been taken-up but that does not assume that the literature presented in this paper is by any means comprehensive. Development of a standard model/framework for Lean services is critical for future research. Rigorous industry-specific studies, specifically in developing nations are another area for future research. Future studies could analyse the impact of join applications and possible links between Lean service and other approaches like TQM, Six Sigma, etc., with an aim of process improvement.
Practical implications
This paper would serve as a resource for Lean practitioners as well as researchers as a fundamental platform, contributing to Lean body of knowledge.
Social implications
Service industry has special significance to the society in large. Many services including governments, public interest services, non-profit organisations, healthcare, banking, consulting, etc., has a significant share across markets. Lean being a proven methodology for successful process improvements has to be looked at from a services perspective. This paper helps in such interest.
Originality/value
Publications reviewing the adoption of Lean in services is scarce in literature. This paper serves as an excellent resource for research on the subject and will facilitate academicians and practitioners to objectively understand Lean in service sector.

Purpose
The present paper aims to conduct a comprehensive scientific mapping of exchange rate forecasting, highlighting trends, developments, and methodological changes. This will provide research scholars, researchers, and policymakers valuable insights to facilitate predictions.
Design/methodology/approach
The researchers performed a bibliometric analysis of exchange rate forecasting using a scientific search method on the Scopus database from 1991 to 2022. They applied a web interface program called Biblioshiny, part of the Bibliometric package built in R by Aria and Cuccurullo (2017). VOSviewer was used to identify the most influential journals, authors, countries, articles, citations, and co-citations from 1,602 documents.
Findings
The conceptual and intellectual framework of the papers under review provided an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the domain. The research outcomes provided essential information on the subject matter, highlighting the need for further investigation. The study’s findings demonstrate the evolution of the theory of forecasting exchange rates reflecting continuous developments in the methodologies applied to forecast the exchange rates.
Research limitations/implications
The scientific mapping of the present study’s bibliometric analysis is limited to the Scopus database because of its comprehensive coverage of high-quality journals and predefined structures compatible with Bibliometrix software.
Practical implications
The study provides considerable insight into forecasting exchange rates and their interlinkages. By outlining the social and intellectual structure of the field, it directs upcoming scholars about the relevant topics, contexts and potential collaborations emerging in this field. The study also reveals the critical concerns in the area and leads to potential research opportunities.
Social implications
The study sheds light on emerging trends and approaches to forecasting exchange rates and will provide valuable information and insights to policymakers, economists, investors and decision-makers in the financial sector. It will contribute to prioritising research in overlooked areas and support the formulation of effective policies.
Originality/value

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between two major constructs (supply chain management practices (SCMP) and supply chain performance measures), which determines the efficiency and efficacy of retail-supply chain management, using a rigorous empirical method to validate the instrument scale for measuring the validity and reliability of the identified constructs. Additionally, the paper further tests the relationship between SCMP and supply chain performance measures using structural equation modeling (SEM).
Design/methodology/approach
Data were compiled and collected from 213 operations and supply chain (SC) heads from leading retail stores in India. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the validity of the proposed measurement scale and the relationship is tested using SEM.
Findings
The results of the research will help the decision makers in the SC/procurement field to understand the importance of the association between SCMP and supply chain performance measures. Statistical tests show that the implementation of SCMP are associated with supply chain performance measures, which leads to overall improvements; moreover, there is a statistically significant association between the five SCMP and eight SCPM.
Research limitations/implications
This research is also needed to provide more understanding about the SCMP along with the supply chain performance measures and the positive association among them. Overall, this research provides an additional insight into the growing field of the relationships between SCMP and SCPM. Clearly, the field has ample space to grow in terms of research and practice.
Originality/value
This research paper contributes to the literature on supply chain performance measurement.

Purpose
The paper aims to study hotel owners’ perception of tourism in the five creative cities of India during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
Semi-structured, in-depth interviews (N = 30) and participant observation were the methods used for collecting qualitative data. Data was analysed using content analysis.
Findings
The findings reveal the effect of tourism on the psyche of small and medium enterprise hotel owners. Factors contributing to this anxiety are unpreparedness for the crisis, cash flow problems, failure to be flexible in this crisis, inability to leverage hotel’s location and lack of hygiene habits.
Research limitations/implications
The research illustrated a systemic lack of knowledge and training in the unorganized hotel sector in India which if addressed, could assist the hotel owners and staff in building trust toward tourists and a positive attitude toward the crisis.
Originality/value
As the study analyses the unorganized hotel sector in the Indian context, it provides useful insights for the Indian Government and hospitality industry to foster trust and positivity in this sector during the COVID-19 pandemic which could significantly contribute to its revival and psychological recovery of its stakeholders.

Abstract
Purpose
With the developments of the digital era and considerable developments in ICT, advertisers are leveraging data-driven forms of online advertising to target consumers individually. The present study integrates privacy concerns with the constructs from the persuasion knowledge model to investigate consumer avoidance of online behavioural advertising (OBA).
Design/methodology/approach
The study employed an online survey method for data collection using a sample size of 345. Reliability and validity of the measurement scales were ensured, and hypotheses developed were tested through PLS-SEM using SMART PLS.
Findings
The results show that persuasion knowledge is a significant predictor of perceived benefits, perceived risks and privacy concerns. Also, privacy concern was found to significantly mediate persuasion knowledge-avoidance behaviour and perceived risk-avoidance behaviour. On the other hand, the perceived benefit was not found significant in influencing privacy concerns for OBA.
Practical implications
The present study is one of the initial attempts to understand the level of knowledge Indian consumers hold about OBA and how they evaluate and respond to these data-driven forms of advertising. The current study helps advance knowledge of the field and the theories used. Future studies might look at the effect of various demographic and psychographic aspects on consumer avoidance of OBA.
Originality/value
As the country is shifting to digital, it becomes really important to understand the privacy concerns that people perceive in regard with the current advertising practices.

Abhishek Industries Limited (ABIL) is an entrepreneurial venture of Mr Abhishek Batra that came into being in 1993. ABIL is the leading supplier of Terry Towels to some of world's leading retailers including Wal-Mart, JC Penney and Sears. In spite of some business fluctuations, ABIL has an impressive performance record that is reflected in its financial data. The concern, however, is that of product commoditisation, since established foreign importers and distributors prefer to sell the products under their own brand name. Consequently, even though the export margins may be lucrative; the lack of a brand presence is what bothers the senior management of the company. Given an optimistic domestic business scenario, the senior management is once again evaluating the odds to enter the domestic market using its own brand name. While some of the younger managers are optimistic and want ABIL to emerge as a brand, some senior colleagues are unsure.
Expected learning outcomes
The student's skills will be sharpened in working through a problem; it will help the students take an active role of a thinker, analyser, evaluator, decider and implementer; it will assist the students in learning to reason with the given quantitative as well as qualitative data; it will help the students think critically and reason effectively; it will make the students realize that the emphasis is not on solution. Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this empirical study is to enable a better understanding of the construct sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial intentions (SEI) and thereby promote sustainable entrepreneurship. It aims to examine the significance of work values (extrinsic rewards, intrinsic rewards and job security) as antecedents of SEI and to test the mediating effect of three constructs derived from the theory of planned behaviour – attitude towards sustainability, perceived entrepreneurial desirability and perceived entrepreneurial feasibility on the relationships between work values and SEI.
Design/methodology/approach
Confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis were performed using analysis of moment structures v27 and statistical package for social science v28 on data obtained from the survey of young individuals of India. The respondents were students enrolled in higher education programmes.
Findings
All the identified antecedents (extrinsic rewards, intrinsic rewards, job security and theory of planned behaviour constructs) were found to be statistically significant. The partial mediating effect of the theory of planned behaviour constructs was also reported.
Originality/value
This empirical work leads to the theoretical advancement of the emerging construct, SEI, by presenting evidence of the significant individual-level antecedents of the construct. The results lead to recommendations for policymakers and educators to design strategies to strengthen SEI, thereby expanding the adoption of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to create and evaluate a model for cryptocurrency adoption by investigating how age, education, and gender impact Behavioural Intention. A hybrid approach that combined partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and artificial neural network (ANN) was used for the purpose.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a multi-analytical hybrid approach, combining PLS-SEM and ANN to illustrate the impact of various identified variables on behavioral intention toward using cryptocurrency. Multi-group analysis (MGA) is applied to determine whether different data groups of age, gender and education have significant differences in the parameter estimates that are specific to each group.
Findings
The findings indicate that Social Influence (SI) has the greatest impact on Behavioral Intention (BI), which suggests that the viewpoints and recommendations of influential and well-known individuals can serve as a motivating factor to invest in cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, education was found to be a moderating factor in the relationship found between behavioral intention and design.
Research limitations/implications
Prior studies on technology adoption have utilized superficial SEM and ANN methods, whereas a more effective outcome has been suggested by implementing a dual-stage PLS-SEM and ANN approach utilizing a deep neural network architecture. This methodology can enhance the accuracy of nonlinear connections in the model and augment the deep learning capacity.
Practical implications
The research is based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) and expands upon this model by integrating elements of design and trust. This is an important addition, as design can influence individuals' willingness to try new technologies, while trust is a critical factor in determining whether individuals will adopt and use new technology.
Social implications
Cryptocurrencies are a relatively new phenomenon in India, and their use and adoption have grown significantly in recent years. However, this development has not been without controversy, as the implications of cryptocurrencies for society, the economy and governance remain uncertain. The results reveal that social influence is an important predictor for the adoption of cryptocurrency in India, and this can help financial institutions and regulators in making policy decisions accordingly.
Originality/value
Given the emerging nature of cryptocurrency adoption in India, there is certainly a need for further empirical research in this area. The current study aims to address this research gap and achieve the following objectives: (a) to determine if a dual-stage PLS-SEM and ANN analysis utilizing deep learning techniques can yield more comprehensive research findings than a PLS-SEM approach and (b) to identify variables that can forecast the intention to adopt cryptocurrency.
