Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to fill low content of silica to improve the wear resistance of graphite/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites, and to discuss the effect of low content of silica on the morphology of terrace-like transfer film.

Design/methodology/approach

The tribological properties of silica/graphite/PTFE composites were tested by rotating pin-on-disk friction and wear tester, and the morphology of terrace-like transfer film was observed by 3D laser scanning microscope and quantitatively analyzed through the multi-Gaussian function linear combination model.

Findings

The results showed that adding 3 wt.% silica in graphite/PTFE composites can reduce the wear rate by 87%. More importantly, the morphology of terrace-like transfer film changed significantly after filling a small amount of silica, including the increase of the number of layers and the coverage rate of transfer film.

Originality/value

This work is of great significance for further understanding the transfer film and achieving its morphology control to optimize the wear of high performance PTFE composites.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the fretting wear mechanism of an Al-Li alloy at room temperature, the tangential fretting wear tests were carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of displacement amplitude and fretting frequency on the tangential fretting wear characteristics were mainly investigated. The experimental data obtained are analyzed and compared.

Findings

The results indicated that the fretting friction coefficient increased with the increase of displacement amplitude. As the displacement amplitude increased, the wear scar morphology changed significantly, mainly in terms of delamination debris and furrow scratches. The wear mechanism changed from initial mild wear to more severe oxidative wear, adhesive wear and abrasive wear.

Originality/value

This paper extends the knowledge into mechanical tight connections. The conclusions can provide theoretical guidance for the fretting of mechanical tight connections in the field of automotive lightweight and aerospace.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to solve the premature failure of the rubber stator due to wear, reduce the frictional resistance moment of the screw pump to solve the problem of a model of Daqing oilfield screw pump oil recovery system shutdown after the difficult start.

Design/methodology/approach

For the first time, the rotor surface of a screw pump was treated with dot-matrix texture to study the effect of dot matrix texture on the tribological performance of the stator-rotor friction subsets of screw pump. Reciprocating friction tests with different texture morphologies (S-shape, double tongue) and angular parameters (0°, 45° and 90°) were conducted at 10% of the texture area and pump silicone grease.

Findings

When point texture was added to the surface of the rotor sample, the friction coefficient and wear quantity of the sample were lower than those of the surface without texture treatment, and the double tongue 0° combination showed the best tribological properties. At this time, the average coefficient of friction and wear is reduced by 22.8% and 62%, 28.6% and 64.8%.

Originality/value

The introduction of texture can effectively improve the tribological performance of progressive screw pumps, and this paper provides important theoretical and experimental support for the design of progressive screw pumps in practical applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the microtopography transformation at a low-speed heavy-load interface with the lubrication of powder particles and its nonlinear friction effect on the sliding pair in contact.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the universal mechanical tester (UMT) tribometer and VK shape-measuring laser microscope, comparative friction experiments were conducted with graphite powder lubrication. The friction coefficient with nonlinear fluctuations and the three-dimensional morphology of the boundary layer at the interface were observed and analyzed under different operating conditions. The effects on lubrication mechanisms and frictional nonlinearity at the sliding pair were focused on under different surface roughness and powder layer thickness conditions.

Findings

At a certain external load and sliding speed, the initial specimen surface with an appropriate initial roughness and powder thickness can store and bond the powder lubricant to form a boundary film readily. The relatively flat and firm boundary layer of powder at the microscopic interface can reduce the coefficient of friction and suppress its nonlinear fluctuation effectively. Therefore, proper surface roughness and powder layer thickness are beneficial to the graphite lubrication and stability maintenance of a friction pair.

Originality/value

This research is conducive to developing a deep understanding of the microtopography transformation with frictional nonlinearity at a low-speed heavy-load interface with graphite powder lubrication.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the lubrication and sealing performance on the textured piston pair under the cross action of the shape and structure parameters. This paper further carries out the optimization design of low energy consumption hydraulic impact piston pair.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the characteristics of the ring gap seal piston pair, the flow field analysis model of the whole film gap is established for its periodic treatment. The friction power loss of the piston pair is defined as the evaluation index of the lubrication performance and the leakage power loss as the evaluation index of the sealing performance. The orthogonal test design and CFD software were used to analyze the lubrication and sealing performance of the textured piston pair.

Findings

The cross action of shape and structure factors has a great influence of the lubrication and sealing performance on the textured piston pair. Clearance and shape parameters have great influence on it, while seal length and depth diameter ratio have little influence. The sealing performance of conical textured piston pair is good, while the lubrication performance of square textured piston pair is good. The primary and secondary order of influence of shape and structure on energy consumption on piston pair is B (seal clearance) > C (texture shape) > D (area ratio) > A (seal length) > E (depth diameter ratio).

Originality/value

Breaking the defect of local optimization design on traditional piston pair structure, then find the matching relationship of structural parameters on textured piston pair. Further improve the lubrication and sealing performance of the piston pair, and provide reference for the global optimization design of the low energy consumption hydraulic impact piston pair.
