Abstract

Total hip replacement is a common and expensive procedure. Any attempt to shorten the length of hospital stay safely is desirable. Proposes a scoring system specifically designed for this patient population, to determine the optimal timing of safe discharge and post‐acute care placement. Discusses its implications for the quality of patient care.

Abstract

There is a dearth of information on the cardiovascular health of immigrant women. The present study analyzed the dataset from the National Population Health Survey to describe the modifiable CVD risk factors of Canadian immigrant women. Results indicated a statistically significant difference in modifiable CVD risk factors with respect to the country of birth, spoken language, and the length of time in Canada. The prevalence of smoking was significantly different across all income groups, with the lowest and middle income groups having the highest prevalence rate. Compared with their non‐white counterparts, the white immigrant women had a greater prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and smoking. Irrespective of race and country of birth, immigrant women tended to have worse CVD risk factors than non‐immigrant women. Age was the most important predictor of heart disease and hypertension. Implications of the study results for evidence‐based practice are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

To describe the process of building partnerships between a health professional group (university‐based researchers and organizations from within and outside the health sector) and the black communities, highlight the accomplishments and identify problems in the process.

Design/methodology/approach

The description of the process of building partnerships with four black communities in Nova Scotia is organized in the following sections: the impetus for launching a Diabetes Primary Prevention for the Black Communities Project, its preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The accomplishments and the problems associated with the Project are analysed.

Findings

Recruitment of participants for the focus groups was challenging. Response rate to survey questionnaire was moderate. Presentation of the Project results by one of the black Project assistants to the participant communities was well received. The Project was quite successful in encouraging community involvement by engaging community groups in several small‐scale activities. Three issues related to project implementation were identified: recruitment of focus groups, participant disappointment, and survey return rates. Strategies incorporating the principles of involving a target audience, providing a service, empowering people and respecting cultural diversity with the aim to ensure successful partnership building with the black communities were proposed.

Originality/value

This paper describes the process of forging partnership with the black communities. The results of the Project could serve as a paradigm for developing culturally sensitive and responsive strategies to lessen the burden of type 2 diabetes in other racial minority communities.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has emerged as a major public health problem in Canada. Although the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes among black people is higher than that of white people in Canada, there is no diabetes prevention programme specifically designed to address the behavioural and sociocultural influences on the development of the disease in the black communities. This paper discusses a proposed conceptual framework for the development and evaluation of a diabetes prevention programme that is culturally relevant and responsive to the black communities in Canada. The research literature and results of a recent pilot study that assessed the programming needs of four black communities provide the basis upon which the proposed framework is developed.

Abstract

Immigrants are a part of America’s founding and history. Until this study, it was unclear how immigrants have been historically portrayed in youth American trade books. Utilizing a discourse analysis approach, this study offered a critical and comparative examination of the portrayal of first-generation immigrants, the authors’ perspectives, and the historical evolution of American trade books written during two peak United States immigration eras (1880-1930s and 1980-2010s). After examining 98 books written over 100 years, findings indicated in both peak immigration eras, immigrants faced similar problems; first-generation immigrants were insensitively criticized and viewed as subpar individuals by Americans. As a whole, books were mostly tales of assimilation and mistreatment in the United States. Since youths’ ideas of people and cultural groups are formed by what they learn from not only social interaction but also the media, it is important for books to provide meaningful representations of immigrants.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the global history of library consortia from ancient times until the present and propose further development of consortia to address journal costs and research distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The global history of consortia is reviewed, with a concentration on the early years of the American Library Association.

Findings

Consortia have proved their value in making libraries more efficient and in advancing research through combined efforts in developing indexes and catalogues.

Research limitations/implications

The paper encourages libraries to build on their history of cooperation and extend it by linking their repositories, using their own strengths to battle excessive subscription fees, and become publishers in their own right.

Practical implications

Consortia are encouraged to work together to build a global repository, to stand firm against predatory pricing and to take the lead in the dissemination of scholarship.

Originality/value

This paper proposes that libraries join in broad regional consortia to oppose unjustifiable prices imposed by the major publishers and that libraries, with their institutions, work regionally and internationally to take control of the distribution of research.

Abstract

Purpose

This research paper aims to provide recommendations for enhancing the service quality of coworking spaces in Malaysia through effective workplace management. This study emphasizes the importance of avoiding over-promising and under-delivering, prioritizing cleanliness, functionality and customer satisfaction over profit to prevent user attrition.

Design/methodology/approach

Questionnaire surveys were administered to users of selected coworking spaces in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Respondents were asked to assess both their expectations and perceived performance of various coworking space features. The resulting gap scores were then analyzed to develop recommendations for enhancing the overall performance of these coworking spaces.

Findings

The analysis of the responses indicated that users had higher expectations for “location” and “facilities services,” while the actual service performance in these areas was less satisfactory. Among the nine sub-attributes under “facilities and services,” three (opening hours, coffee and tea corner, café or restaurant) received negative gap scores, significantly affecting overall user satisfaction. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that coworking space managers prioritize the consistent provision and maintenance of these key features to better meet user demands and enhance satisfaction levels.

Originality/value

This study is innovative in applying a gap analysis approach to coworking spaces, identifying discrepancies between user expectations and actual service performance. This method provides a deeper understanding of the areas that require improvement, contributing to more user-centered coworking space management.

Abstract

For students who are blind or visually impaired, technology enables greater access to the educational curriculum, immediate and independent access to information, and full participation in community and citizenship. This chapter reviews research on technology use by students with visual impairments, and highlights effective practices, promising developments, and ongoing challenges. The authors discuss the implications of these advancements on policy, instruction, professional development, and future research.
