Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and estimate the stray current corrosion hazard of a buried metallic pipeline using a predictive model for stray current density.

Design/methodology/approach

A predictive model for stray current density of the buried metallic pipeline was built, using a back propagation (BP) neural network method and experimental data. The accuracy of the model was tested using test samples. The single sensitivity analysis predictive method was used to establish the relationship between stray current density with the soil resistivity. The effects of buried depth and the pipe‐to‐ground voltage offset were researched using this network model.

Findings

The feasibility of the BP neural network to forecast stray current effects from the buried metallic pipeline was confirmed.

Originality/value

The paper provides a new method to analyze and estimate the stray current corrosion hazard of buried metallic pipelines.

Abstract

Purpose

The intelligent Central Traffic Control (CTC) system plays a vital role in establishing an intelligent high-speed railway (HSR) system. As the core of HSR transportation command, the intelligent CTC system is a new HSR dispatching command system that integrates the widely used CTC in China with the practical service requirements of intelligent dispatching. This paper aims to propose key technologies and applications for intelligent dispatching command in HSR in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first briefly introduces the functions and configuration of the intelligent CTC system. Some new servers, terminals and interfaces are introduced, which are plan adjustment server/terminal, interface for automatic train operation (ATO), interface for Dynamic Monitoring System of Train Control Equipment (DMS), interface for Power Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (PSCADA), interface for Disaster Monitoring, etc.

Findings

The key technologies applied in the intelligent CTC system include automatic adjustment of train operation plans, safety control of train routes and commands, traffic information data platform, integrated simulation of traffic dispatching and ATO function. These technologies have been applied in the Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR, which commenced operations at the end of 2019. Implementing these key intelligent functions has improved the train dispatching command capacity, ensured the safe operation of intelligent HSR, reduced the labor intensity of dispatching operators and enhanced the intelligence level of China's dispatching system.

Originality/value

This paper provides further challenges and research directions for the intelligent dispatching command of HSR. To achieve the objectives, new measures need to be conducted, including the development of advanced technologies for intelligent dispatching command, coping with new requirements with the development of China's railway signaling system, the integration of traffic dispatching and train control and the application of AI and data-driven modeling and methods.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of laser surface texturing on the tribological performance of Ti-6Al-4V disks sliding against Si3N4 balls under hydroxyethyl-cellulose water-based lubrication. The friction coefficients and wear losses of textured and untextured disks were measured and compared. The results indicate that the texture patterns can lead to reduction of friction and wear in the condition of water-based lubrication.

Design/methodology/approach

Solutions of hydroxyethyl cellulose were used as water-based lubricants. To find the optimal laser texturing parameters for the best performance enhancement, three line-like patterns were fabricated onto the disks and three machining parameters were used for each type of pattern. Tribological tests were conducted in rotation sliding with ball-on-disk contact configuration on UMT-2.

Findings

A higher density of texture lines leads to a larger friction and wear reduction. Compared with untextured disks, the friction coefficient is reduced from 0.043 to 0.028 for textured disks. Some unworn parts were detected in the contact region of the balls against textured disks, which were not found on the balls against untextured disks. The worn surfaces indicated that periodic geometry of the contact track was rebuilt during run-in period, which was beneficial for the formation of lubricant films.

Originality/value

In this work, laser surface texturing was used to reduce the friction and wear of Ti-6Al-4V specimens in water-based lubrication, which can be used to improve the tribological performance of Ti-6Al-4V components in mechanical equipment.

Abstract

Using energy economically and efficiently is essential to ensure national energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and preventing climate change. Household appliances consume considerable energy, so choosing energy-efficient is to consuming energy economically and efficiently. The research applies the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) to empirically investigate factors affecting consumers’ purchase intention toward energy-efficient household appliances (EEHA) in Ho Chi Minh City (HCM). The chapter develops both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method is conducted with five in-depth interviews to get more consumer insight, verify the research model, and elaborate the questionnaire. The quantitative method with 300 consumers living in HCM is used to address the research question. The primary data are collected via a web-based questionnaire and analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 20 and Amos 20. The research indicates that attitude, subjective norm (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), past purchase experience (PPE), and economic benefit (EB) have significant positive impacts on consumers’ purchase intention. EB has the most significant impact. Nonetheless, consumers’ purchase intention is not significantly impacted by their level of environmental knowledge (EK). Besides, PPE and EBs positively impact attitude and indirectly affect purchase intention, while EK does not. Based on the empirical results, some recommendations are drawn for policymakers to promote energy-efficient household appliance consumption by citizens, thereby ensuring national energy security and promoting environmental protection. Implications to help manufacturers improve products in the right direction and make wise investment decisions and distributors/retailers to understand consumers in HCM are also suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain technology (BCT) is considered a promising tool to improve the productivity of construction project management. Existing research has studied its potential costs and benefits for the construction industry. However, the potential costs and benefits of BCT failed to be compared as actual costs and benefits of specific applications for stakeholders. To fill this gap, this study seeks to analyze the cost-effectiveness of BCT-based applications in construction project management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is conducted with a customized systematic literature review based on transaction cost theory to enable qualitative comparison. With a deliberately designed structure confining extraneous variables, the costs and benefits of BCT-based applications are identified and compared. The inherent dependent relations of processes and the evolution relations of functions are identified. The cost-effectiveness of blockchain adoption is then analyzed.

Findings

Seven functions and six challenges are identified within five processes. The result suggests all identified functions are cost-effective except for manual instruction (coding smart contracts manually). The smart contracts require explicit definition and logic to be effective. However, the construction projects essentially require the institution to be flexible due to unpredictability. The adoption of smart contracts and corresponding additional requirements can increase the transaction cost of bounded rationality.

Research limitations/implications

As manual instruction is fundamental to realize other functions, and its advanced substitute relies on its broad adoption, its cost-effectiveness must be improved for applications to be acceptable to stakeholders. The establishment of a universal smart contract model and a universal, legitimate and efficient database structure are recommended to minimize the cost and maximize the effect of applications.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the knowledge by providing a comprehensive analysis of BCT adoption’s cost-effectiveness in construction project management. The adopted review structure can be extended to analyze the qualitative benefits and challenges of management automation in the early stages.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reveal the factors that drive researchers to share data and to provide reference for promoting open scientific data.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the theory of social capital and the theory of planned behaviour, hypotheses were proposed and the model was developed. The authors acquired 479 valid samples of Chinese researchers through questionnaires and conducted an empirical analysis via AMOS 23.0.

Findings

Attitudes towards data sharing are significantly and positively correlated with trust, reciprocity and social interaction, but not with a shared vision; willingness to share data is significantly and positively correlated with attitudes and perceived behavioural control, but not with subjective norms; furthermore, data quality, which performed the function of a moderating variable, was found to play a facilitating role in the above correlations. Based on the findings, suggestions for relevant entities were specified.

Originality/value

The study developed and validated an integrated theoretical framework, clarified the mechanism by which social capital and planned behaviour affect willingness to share data, hoping to provide reference and empirical support for subsequent studies as well as new ideas for data management and sharing.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a train timetable rescheduling (TTR) approach from the perspective of multi-train tracking optimization based on the mutual spatiotemporal information in the high-speed railway signaling system.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, a single-train trajectory optimization (STTO) model is constructed based on train dynamics and operating conditions. The train kinematics parameters, including acceleration, speed and time at each position, are calculated to predict the arrival times in the train timetable. A STTO algorithm is developed to optimize a single-train time-efficient driving strategy. Then, a TTR approach based on multi-train tracking optimization (TTR-MTTO) is proposed with mutual information. The constraints of temporary speed restriction (TSR) and end of authority are decoupled to calculate the tracking trajectory of the backward tracking train. The multi-train trajectories at each position are optimized to generate a time-efficient train timetable.

Findings

The numerical experiment is performed on the Beijing-Tianjin high-speed railway line and CR400AF. The STTO algorithm predicts the train’s planned arrival time to calculate the total train delay (TTD). As for the TSR scenario, the proposed TTR-MTTO can reduce TTD by 60.60% compared with the traditional TTR approach with dispatchers’ experience. Moreover, TTR-MTTO can optimize a time-efficient train timetable to help dispatchers reschedule trains more reasonably.

Originality/value

With the cooperative relationship and mutual information between train rescheduling and control, the proposed TTR-MTTO approach can automatically generate a time-efficient train timetable to reduce the total train delay and the work intensity of dispatchers.

The purpose of this paper is to describe how public‐sector organizations in the Chinese autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang are applying e‐HRM practices.

Design

Concentrates on the operation of e‐recruitment, e‐training, e‐compensation, e‐benefits and e‐appraisal.

Findings

Reports that blended conventional and electronic HRM practices exist and are likely to continue for a little while into the future.

Practical implications

Reveals that, where e‐HRM is being used, its prime benefit is in reducing the amount of repetitive paperwork that HR specialists have to carry out.

Social implications

Explains that there is still a tendency for people to work too hard in the Chinese civil service, partly because it is seen as the decent thing to do and partly for employees to earn a lot of money. But there are signs, too, that increasing numbers of employees are seeking a decent work‐life balance.

Originality/value

Reveals how e‐HRM operates in the context of the Chinese public sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate time-optimal control problems for multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems to achieve predefined flying shape.

Design/methodology/approach

Two time-optimal protocols are proposed for the situations with or without human control input, respectively. Then, Pontryagin’s minimum principle approach is applied to deal with the time-optimal control problems for UAV systems, where the cost function, the initial and terminal conditions are given in advance. Moreover, necessary conditions are derived to ensure that the given performance index is optimal.

Findings

The effectiveness of the obtained time-optimal control protocols is verified by two contrastive numerical simulation examples. Consequently, the proposed protocols can successfully achieve the prescribed flying shape.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a solution to solve the time-optimal control problems for multiple UAV systems to achieve predefined flying shape.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to compare the communication practices of Chinese and US companies on YouTube and explores the effectiveness of different communication strategies at the topic level.

Design/methodology/approach

The author selected 22 Chinese companies and 22 US firms and compared the content of their English language corporate YouTube channels through content analysis, sentiment analysis and cluster analysis.

Findings

The results revealed that the three communication strategies (information, response and involvement) in general were not significantly different regarding their engagement rates, but they generated different comment scores when communicating topics of corporate social responsibility. The results also showed that Chinese companies were more likely than American firms to display the speeches of corporate leaders, use collectivistic references and present human interest messages in YouTube videos.

Research limitations/implications

This study sheds light on how national institutional environment shapes corporate communication on YouTube.

Practical implications

This study challenges the infatuation with the involvement strategy and offers some advice for practitioners on topic selection and user comment function management.

Originality/value

This study makes a novel contribution to the literature of corporate communication on YouTube by adopting a cross-national comparative approach. A conceptual framework of major factors influencing stakeholder responses on YouTube was presented.
