The attributes of laser discs are reviewed, as are the “traditional” objections to the use of audiovisual materials — including their lack of specificity to precise objectives. Use of authoring systems is described as a means of tailoring laser disc programs to meet those precise objectives, as well as updating aging materials. The flexibility and power of the Video Nova Authoring System is explained and illustrated. A sidebar at the end of the article evaluates the Sony SMC‐70 microcomputer.

Forthcoming Conference The Institute of Information Scientists announces that its 1992 Conference will be entitled “The Common Market for Information” and will be on the theme of information‐gathering techniques and information usage in Europe and beyond — a wide field! The venue is likely to be the Bedford Moat House Hotel and the time mid‐May or early June, but at present IIS is calling for papers. The African Caribbean Library Association's (ACLA) current Chair is Gloria Lock of Wandsworth Libraries. I interviewed her recently about the Association — the results of which are reproduced here with her consent.

The distinction between digital and analog data, the specific advantages of analog storage and the use of optical discs to store analog data are detailed. The configuration and potential of Level One, Level Two, and Level Three laser disc systems are explained. Side bars address: 1) selection of display devices for use with laser disc systems, and 2) laser disc systems for accessing audio data.

Two new members of staff are joining BLRDD in September: Lawrence Howells, who is at present working in the Science Reference and Information service, will become a project officer, and Ros Cotton, who is currently working in the Library Association Library, will be the new dissemination officer.

Since the early 70's, library authorities have been keen to make their services more accessible to non‐traditional users. The list of target groups for attention appears endless but roughly follows most authorities' equal opportunity statements which inlcude: black/ethnic minorities; gay men and lesbians; and the disabled. As this feature is concerned with the race dimension, I'd like to focus on service provision for black/ethnic minorities.

This chapter examines the underpinnings of collective resistance in a nonunion factory. I begin by acknowledging the important contribution made by Randy Hodson and others who have uncovered key material structural underpinnings of collective resistance in workplaces. Such an approach, however, leaves large unanswered questions about collective agency. I argue that a focus upon the potential links between lived culture and collective resistance can bring us closer to an understanding of collective agency. To this end, I present key findings of an ethnographic study of culture and resistance at window-blinds factory. I outline the informal collective resistance enacted by the workers in the factory and offer an analysis of the structural factors underpinning the considerable resistance at this factory. The second half of the chapter is dedicated to outlining the everyday Stayin’ Alive culture on the shopfloor and to analyzing the dotted lines that led from this culture to the collective resistance.

This multi-day lesson involves pre-kindergarten - grade 3 students in exploring the similarities found in grandchild-grandparent relationships across the world’s cultures. It stresses key concepts associated with these relationships: love; listen; explore; tell stories; play; teach; learn; celebrate; share; care; and happy, safe, and loved.
