Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate application of the Taguchi method to determine the optimum level of three important parameters (factors) related to the use of a mobile phone for the text message entering task, namely illumination level, noise level and mobile angle that maximizes the performance of mobile phone users.

Design/methodology/approach

Three levels of each parameter as available in the literature, except for the mobile angle, were considered. The design of the experiment, as proposed by Genichi Taguchi, was used to conduct nine experiments. A total of 30 male subjects participated in the experimental study. The text message entry task, in the form of Arabic text, was presented to the participating subjects and their performance, measured in terms of mean number of characters entered per minute, was recorded. The signal‐to‐noise (S/N) ratio and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to investigate the users' performance. Finally, a confirmation test was conducted to verify the validity of the results.

Findings

Results showed that, at the illumination level of 475 lux, noise level of 45 dB(A), and mobile angle of 70 degrees, the subjects were quite comfortable, efficient and entered the maximum number of characters in the mobile phone per minute. The noise was found to be the dominant parameter with a contribution of 95.53 percent towards the laid down objective followed by mobile angle, 3.25 percent and illumination level, 0.66 percent.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge no study has been conducted in the past to investigate the effect of these parameters on the performance of the mobile phone users. In addition, no attempt has yet been made to find the optimal level of these parameters from a text‐entering viewpoint. The paper represents original research and in the authors' opinion carries significantly important values as it provides new information for those involved in the design of the mobile phone environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Open-access repositories (OARs) are essential for openly disseminating intellectual knowledge on the internet and providing free access to it. The current study aims to evaluate the growth and development of OARs in the field of technology by investigating several characteristics such as coverage, OA policies, software type, content type, yearly growth, repository type and geographic contribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The directory of OARs acts as the source for data harvesting, which provides a quality-assured list of OARs across the globe.

Findings

The study found that 125 nations contributed a total of 4,045 repositories in the field of research, with the USA leading the list with the most repositories. Maximum repositories were operated by institutions having multidisciplinary approaches. The DSpace and Eprints were the preferred software types for repositories. The preferred upload content by contributors was “research articles” and “electronic thesis and dissertations”.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to the subject area technology as listed in OpenDOAR; therefore, the results may differ in other subject areas.

Practical implications

The work can benefit researchers across disciplines and, interested researchers can take this study as a base for evaluating online repositories. Moreover, policymakers and repository managers could also get benefitted from this study.

Originality/value

The study is the first of its kind, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to investigate the repositories of subject technology in the open-access platform.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the determinants of school choice and factors that define the success of a school as perceived by the parents and then compare “Public” and “Private” schools with respect to the explored criteria to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on 1,121 quantitative data collected through survey questionnaire from the parents living in urban areas of Bangladesh. The school choice model was developed and validated by applying structural equation modeling.

Findings

This paper offers a statistically significant, robust and reliable five-dimensional 23-item school choice model that includes both school characteristics and preferred outcomes as perceived by the parents. Characteristic-wise comparisons in terms of characteristics revealed that public schools are superior to private institutions in fulfilling several choice criteria such as parents–teacher relationships, performance of the teachers, offerings of special programs, safety assurance in the campus and in having bigger campus with playground. On the other hand, private schools dominate in providing better educational environment, arranging training to the teachers, ensuring satisfactory library services and delivering information effectively to the parents. Among outcome determinants, government schools are well ahead in creating self-discipline, morality and good work habits among students. Private schools are superior in developing critical thinking skill of the kids.

Originality/value

There is a gap of comprehensive empirical study on school choice in South Asia region that includes both school characteristics and outcomes. Therefore, this paper contributes significantly to the relevant literature.
