Abstract

Purpose

Grit is a novel, rather an important psychological variable that has been associated with performance in the English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) context. However, there is a dearth of research on the relationship of grit and pronunciation performance among EFL learners. Consequently, the current study sought to establish the association between grit and the pronunciation performance of Saudi EFL learners by employing pronunciation self-efficacy beliefs as a mediating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative correlational research design was deployed in this research. Data were collected from 350 Saudi university EFL learners using questionnaires and a pronunciation test.

Findings

Findings indicated that both the dimensions of grit (i.e. perseverance of effort and consistency of interest) showed a significant and positive association with the learners' pronunciation self-efficacy beliefs. Also, the pronunciation self-efficacy beliefs showed a significant and positive association with the pronunciation performance. Lastly, findings indicated that pronunciation self-efficacy beliefs mediated the association between girt (i.e. perseverance of effort and consistency of interest) and pronunciation performance.

Originality/value

The study’s findings have implications for the EFL classroom. By incorporating grit and self-efficacy beliefs into students, teachers can enhance their students' English pronunciation performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to study the changing consumer behavior toward broiler meat and apprise its consequences toward food insecurity.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a sequential exploratory mixed-method study in which qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews (n = 38) by snowball sampling. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire survey (n = 975) by convenience sampling. The qualitative data were analyzed through NVivo 10 software by using thematic analysis, i.e. the qualitative content analysis (QCA). The theory of consumer alienation provides the theoretical underpinning for a quantitative study. The established scales were adopted and adapted. The quantitative data was analyzed through AMOS 24 software by using structural equation modeling (SEM).

Findings

It was found that people have many reservations regarding broiler meat. Thus, consumer alienation negatively (ß = −0.10) and the subjective norm positively (ß = 0.82) affects the intention to buy broiler meat.

Research limitations/implications

The ongoing consumer alienation toward broiler will force them to avoid using this cheapest protein and ultimately will lead to food insecurity in developing countries. It is recommended that people must be adequately educated about the real broiler business and its operations to counter their ongoing misperceptions.

Abstract

Purpose

Fashion supply chain (FSC) research has identified two important issues of sustainability management and risk management. However, investigation of these issues is relatively sparse and has primarily been independent with little combinatory research, despite their important interrelationships. The purpose of this paper is to address that gap by critically reviewing extant literature to synthesise important sustainability risk issues in FSCs and proposing an empirical research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a structured literature review approach and Denyer and Tranfield’s (2009) context, intervention, mechanisms and outcome (CIMO) criteria for critical analysis to enable the development of future empirical research areas.

Findings

While sustainability and risk are discussed independently in the supply chain literature, combinatory discussions are very limited, despite the interdependence of these concepts. There is little substantial research on sustainability risk in global FSCs and therefore, an empirical research agenda is proposed with the four research directions to address the gap and take forward the notion of supply chain sustainability risk management in FSCs: definition; organisation and management; influence on performance; and development of a conceptual framework.

Research limitations/implications

This paper provides a critical literature review and thus lacks empirical study.

Practical implications

This paper highlights important issues in sustainability risk management for FSCs and presents an agenda for future empirical research.

Originality/value

This paper contributes by providing a combinatory synthesis of sustainability and risk management in FSC literature and an agenda for future empirical research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of magnetic field on ferrofluid convective mode with radiation.

Design/methodology/approach

Viscosity of Fe3O4 ferrofluid is considered as a function of magnetic field. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained by a powerful numerical method, namely, control volume finite element method (CVFEM). Roles of radiation parameter (Rd), number of undulations (N), Fe3O4–water volume fraction (ϕ), Hartmann (Ha) and Rayleigh numbers are illustrated graphically. A correlation for Nuave is extracted.

Findings

The inner wall temperature decreases with increasing buoyancy forces, but increases with increasing Rd and Ha. Also increasing Rd results in increasing nanofluid motion. This influence is more evident when convection flow is dominant. As nanofluid temperature increases, the nanofluid begins moving from the warm surface to the outer one and dropping along the circular cylinder. At low Rayleigh number, conduction is more significant than convection. |Ψmax| increases as buoyancy force increases and it decreases as the Lorentz force increases. As Hartmann number increases, the center of the vortices moves to x = 0. As Ra increases, convection becomes stronger. Thus, |Ψmax| and temperature gradient increase with increasing Ra. As N increases, the distortion of isotherms reduces and vortices become weaker. Increasing Hartmann number results in a reduction in the thermal plume and the heat transfer mechanism changes from convection to conduction. Nusselt number decreases with increasing NNu decreases with increasing Lorentz force. At N = 5 , increasing the Lorentz force causes the main vortices to convert into three smaller ones. As the Lorentz force increases, the two upper vortices merge together and the thermal plume vanishes. The number of extrema in the Nuloc profile matches the existence of the thermal plume and the number of undulations. Nuave increases with increasing Rd. As buoyancy forces increase, the temperature decreases and in turn Nuave increases with increasing Ra.

Originality/value

Nanofluids are an innovative way to enhance radiation heat. In this paper, MHD Fe3O4–water nanofluid natural convection with radiation source term is examined. Magnetic field-dependent (MFD) viscosity is considered. Using the CVFEM, numerical simulations are carried out for various values of the radiation parameter (Rd = 0 to 0.8), volume fraction of Fe3O4–water (ϕ = 0 to 0.04), Rayleigh number (Ra = 103, 104 and 105), number of undulations (N = 3,4 and 5) and Hartmann number (Ha = 0 to 40).

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a review of the existing literature available on working capital (WC) and working capital management (WCM).

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review (SLR) methodology is used to review 187 articles selected from referred journals, books and international conferences for the period 1980-2017.

Findings

This comprehensive review reveals that much of the focus in the existing literature is paid on investigating the empirical relationship between WCM and firm performance. Furthermore, the attention has been paid towards studying the WC practices. The behavioural aspects, qualitative studies, survey studies and systematic theory development have been ignored in most of the prior studies. These areas have a broader scope for future research.

Research limitations/implications

This study is based on literature review and theoretical in nature. Therefore, it does not have any empirical results.

Practical implications

So far, a limited literature review studies have been conducted in WCM perspective. This review provides various emerging trends, which may be considered in future research for providing a deep understanding of WCM.

Originality/value

This is the first time a detailed review of WCM literature has been conducted by using SLR for the period of 1980-2017. This review will be useful for researchers, business policymaker, finance professionals and all other having direct or indirect concerns with WCM study.

Abstract

Purpose

Numerous studies have examined building information modeling (BIM) adoption in the built asset industry to understand its components, requirements and dynamics of this process. Further research is needed to follow this process, particularly considering emerging practices and technologies. This paper aims to characterize and evaluate the competency profiles underlying the BIM adoption and implementation process across distinct fields within the built asset industry, namely, owners, architecture, engineering, manufacturing, general and specialty contractors.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a quantitative approach, six fields of activity and 136 competencies were related based on data from 368 organizations. This approach, which includes univariate and bivariate methods (profiles and Chi2-test), enables the delineation and comparison of competency profiles underlying BIM adoption across fields of activity.

Findings

In all fields of activity, notable progress is observed in management and operational competencies, while administration, research and development (R&D) and implementation are progressing slowly. Sixty-two competencies are correlated significantly with fields of activity. Of note is the expertise of certain competencies in fields of activity (architecture excels in managerial, functional, technological, implementation and R&D competencies; engineering in administrative and normative competencies). Conversely, some fields of activity notably fall behind in most competencies, such as general and specialty contractors.

Originality/value

By examining the competencies development, this research identifies the key areas in which organizations in various fields of activity should invest to improve their BIM adoption. These findings can guide competency enhancement efforts in the built asset industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore Islamic finance’s resilience in times of financial crisis and considers Islamic finance’s viability as an alternative to the current financial system.

Design/methodology/approach

Established on a review of theoretical aspects underlying the notion of Islamic finance being proficient of reducing the harshness of financial crises and a latent solution to financial volatility, this paper assesses actual performance of Islamic and conventional banks during and in the repercussion of the current financial crisis. Interviews were also conducted with managers of Islamic banks.

Findings

The paper concludes that performance of Islamic banks during the global financial crisis is found to be supportive of their argued resilience and consistency. However, the latest financial crisis has brought to light a number of theoretical and realistic issues that challenge Islamic finance and its absorbing capacity against financial crises.

Originality/value

The paper is an original work which suggests about moderating risks and proposing various ways in which the Islamic finance can be made more stable and resilient.

Abstract

Purpose

The current paper investigates the bioconvective third-grade nanofluid flow containing gyrotactic organisms with Copper-blood nanoparticles in permeable walls.

Design/methodology/approach

The equations governing the flow are solved by adopting the Adomian decomposition method.

Findings

The results show that the biconvection Peclet number decreases the density of motile microorganisms, and the Rayleigh number also decreases the velocity profile.

Practical implications

The present study can be applied to design the higher generation microsystems.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no such investigation has been carried out in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Building information modelling (BIM) has transformed the traditional practices of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. BIM creates a collaborative digital representation of built environment data. Competitive advantage can be achieved with collaborative project delivery and rich information modelling. Despite the abundant benefits, BIM’s adoption in the AEC is susceptible to confrontation. A substantial impediment to BIM adoption often cited is data interoperability. Other facets of interoperability got limited attention. Other academic areas, including information systems, discuss the interoperability construct ahead of data interoperability. These interoperability factors have yet to be surveyed in the AEC industry. This study aims to investigate the effect of interoperability factors on BIM adoption and develop a comprehensive BIM adoption model.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretical foundations of the proposed model are based on the European interoperability framework (EIF) and technology, organization, environment framework (TOE). Quantitative data collection from construction firms is gathered. The model has been thoroughly examined and validated using partial least squares structural equation modelling in SmartPLS software.

Findings

The study’s findings indicate that relative advantage, top management support, government support, organizational readiness and regulation support are determinants of BIM adoption. Financial constraints, complexity, lack of technical interoperability, semantic interoperability, organizational interoperability and uncertainty are barriers to BIM adoption. However, compatibility, competitive pressure and legal interoperability do not affect BIM adoption.

Practical implications

Finally, this study provides recommendations containing the essential technological, organizational, environmental and interoperability factors that AEC stakeholders can address to enhance BIM adoption.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is one of the first studies to combine TOE and EIF in a single research model. This research provides empirical evidence for using the proposed model as a guide to promoting BIM adoption. As a result, the highlighted determinants can assist organizations in developing and executing successful policies that support BIM adoption in the AEC industry.
