Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of controlling shareholders’ share pledging on goodwill impairment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study empirically investigates the effect of controlling shareholders’ share pledging on both the decision and amount of goodwill impairment for Chinese listed firms from 2007 to 2017.

Findings

This study finds that the proportion of controlling shareholders’ share pledging is negatively related to both impairment decisions and amounts; these negative relationships are intensified when firms face high stock price crash risks. In addition, the empirical results show that firms with larger share pledging are less likely to recognize goodwill impairment or are likely to record relatively smaller impairment amounts when they are followed by fewer financial analysts.

Originality/value

Most of the relevant literature has focused on managers’ behaviors toward goodwill impairments, while less attention has been given to goodwill impairments from the perspective of controlling shareholders. In fact, controlling shareholders may have strong incentives to protect their control rights when they exercise disproportionate control rights, especially in China. Given the high ownership concentration, prior studies may not have adequately explained the agency problem of controlling shareholders in goodwill impairment. This study uses share pledging as a case to fill this gap. Specifically, it investigates whether both goodwill impairment decisions and amounts are affected by controlling shareholders’ share pledging.

Abstract

Purpose

The privatization of infrastructure promotes efficiency and service standards. While cross-border private participation infrastructure (PPI) projects hosted in emerging markets have become more prevalent in recent years, there have also been more failures. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how governance distance affects the survival of cross-border PPI projects.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors provide theoretical justification and empirical evidence to verify our views. The authors test the hypotheses on a sample of 4,678 cross-border PPI project investments made in emerging market countries between 1990 and 2016. Estimation techniques consist of a binary logistic regression model and a rare events logistic model.

Findings

The findings suggest that increased governance distance can lead to project failure. The study results show that governance distance is negatively correlated with the probability of project survival. Greenfield investment intensifies the negative effect of governance distance while competitive contracts mitigate the negative effect of governance distance.

Practical implications

The results reveal that transnational investment in infrastructure projects is susceptible to institutional differences between home and host countries. Therefore, both private enterprises and host government should pay attention to the impact of inter-country differences on negotiations and project operation. Competitive contracts mitigate this negative effect, but entering in the form of greenfield investment amplifies the negative effect of distance.

Originality/value

Transnational industrial engineering projects are easily affected by the differences in governance levels between the two countries. This study introduces governance distance into the field of infrastructure projects, focusing on the impact of differences between home and host countries on transnational projects. The findings on infrastructure projects that are closely related to host government contribute to the literature by broadening the research of institution and distance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the changes in the microstructure and grain orientation of the full Cu3Sn solder joint (Cu/Cu3Sn/Cu) during isothermal aging at 420°C.

Design/methodology/approach

The Cu3Sn solder joint was fabricated through soldering Cu/Sn/Cu structure and then aged at 420°C. The microstructure evolution and grain orientation were studied by observing the cross-section and top-view surfaces of solder joints.

Findings

Original Cu3Sn solder joint initially transformed into the full Cu41Sn11solder joint (Cu/Cu41Sn11/Cu) at 10 h and finally into the full α(Cu) solder joint (Cu/α(Cu)/Cu) at 150 h during aging. Micro-voids formed in the center of the solder joint interface during the conversion of Cu41Sn11to α(Cu), resulting in lower reliability of the solder joint. Cu3Sn and Cu41Sn11 grains presented a column-like shape, while α(Cu) presented an irregular shape. The average grain sizes of interfacial phases first increased and then decreased during aging. Original Cu3Sn solder joint exhibited two main textures: [100]//TD and [203]//TD. For Cu41Sn11, the preferred orientation of [111]//TD was found in the early nucleation stage, while the orientation of the formed full Cu41Sn11 solder joint was dispersed. Furthermore, α(Cu) grains exhibited {100}<100> preferred orientation.

Originality/value

Few researchers focused on the process of microstructure and grain orientation changes during high-temperature (> 300°C) aging of Cu3Sn solder joint. To bridge the research gap, a high-temperature aging experiment was conducted on Cu3Sn solder joints.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the proliferation of service chatbots in the tourism industry, the question on its continuance intentions among customers has largely remain unanswered. Building on an integrated framework using the task–technology fit theory (TTF) and the expectation–confirmation model (ECM), the present study aims to settle this debate by investigating the factors triggering customers to continue to use chatbots in a travel planning context.

Design/methodology/approach

The research followed a quantitative approach in which a survey of 322 chatbot users was undertaken. The model was empirically validated using the structural equation modelling approach using AMOS.

Findings

The results reveal that users’ expectations are confirmed when they believe that the technological characteristics of chatbots satisfy their task-related characteristics. Simply, the results reveal a significant and direct effect of TTF on customers’ confirmation and perceived usefulness towards chatbots. Moreover, perceived usefulness and confirmation were found to positively impact customers’ satisfaction towards chatbots, in which the former exerts a relatively stronger impact. Not surprisingly, customers’ satisfaction with the artificial intelligence(AI)-based chatbots emerged as a predominant predictor of their continuance use.

Practical implications

The findings have various practical ramifications for developers who must train chatbot algorithms on massive data to increase their accuracy and to answer more exhaustive inquiries, thereby generating a task–technology fit. It is recommended that service providers give consumers hassle-free service and precise answers to their inquiries to guarantee their satisfaction.

Originality/value

The present work attempted to empirically construct and evaluate the combination of the TTF model and the ECM, which is unique in the AI-based chatbots available in a tourism context. This research presents an alternate method for understanding the continuance intentions concerning AI-based service chatbots.

Abstract

Purpose

Grey modeling technique is an important element of grey system theory, and academic articles applied to agricultural science research have been published since 1985, proving the broad applicability and effectiveness of the technique from different aspects and providing a new means to solve agricultural science problems. The analysis of the connotation and trend of the application of grey modeling technique in agricultural science research contributes to the enrichment of grey technique and the development of agricultural science in multiple dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the relevant literature selected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Web of Science, SpiScholar and other databases in the past 37 years (1985–2021), this paper firstly applied the bibliometric method to quantitatively visualize and systematically analyze the trend of publication, productive author, productive institution, and highly cited literature. Then, the literature is combed by the application of different grey modeling techniques in agricultural science research, and the literature research progress is systematically analyzed.

Findings

The results show that grey model technology has broad prospects in the field of agricultural science research. Agricultural universities and research institutes are the main research forces in the application of grey model technology in agricultural science research, and have certain inheritance. The application of grey model technology in agricultural science research has wide applicability and precise practicability.

Originality/value

By analyzing and summarizing the application trend of grey model technology in agricultural science research, the research hotspot, research frontier and valuable research directions of grey model technology in agricultural science research can be more clearly grasped.
