Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the relationship between organizational capacity, slack resource, platform strategic choice and firm performance. It also tackles the endogenous issues regarding the strategic choice of platform types.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses Heckman’s two-stage procedures to examine the relationship between the variables. The sample in this study comes from Compustat annual company and segment files. The sample used in the main analysis consists of 252 individual corporations globally and 3,528 firm-year observations from 2004–2017.
Findings
The empirical results suggest that: (1) firms are more likely to develop physical platforms than virtual platforms when they possess higher levels of available slack, potential slack, research and development (R&D) capacity and marketing capacity; (2) in general, firms developing physical platforms perform better than firms developing virtual platforms after the endogeneity bias are controlled; and (3) firms that choose to develop physical platforms perform better than if they had chosen to develop virtual platforms.
Research limitations/implications
This study contributes to the platform research literature by proposing the endogenous role of platform type choice in firm performance in the context of the retail industry. Prior conceptual and theoretical platform studies have seldom focused on the retail industry through a strategic choice perspective. Furthermore, one of the contributions of this study is the derivation of empirical support for the research’s prediction using data from actual firms carried out by global physical and virtual platform companies. This study also presents many opportunities for further explorations on the relationship between firm strategic choice and firm performance in the context of platform retail industry.
Practical implications
The findings of this study suggest that firms must realize that their performance is not necessarily affected by these platform type choice determinants in terms of potential slack, available slack, R&D capacity and marketing capacity. By contrast, they should pay more attention to developing physical platforms if it is possible. The study findings indicate that although virtual platforms have grown rapidly because of the development of technology, firm performance is at all times superior when firms choose to develop physical platforms.
Originality/value
Prior platform studies have focused on the topic of network structure, platform architecture, pricing strategy, platform leadership and platform design and governance within the context of video game industry, software industry, hardware industry and telecommunications industry. Seldom of them focus on other industries through a strategic choice perspective. Furthermore, one of the contributions of this study is the derivation of empirical support for the research’s prediction using data from actual firms carried out by global physical and virtual platform companies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships among choice of industry diversification, capabilities and business group performance, as well as to point out the potential concern about endogenous role of industry diversification.
Design/methodology/approach
Using data from the top 100 business groups in Taiwan from TEJ database. This study uses Heckman’s two-step estimation procedure and contingency model to achieve unbiased results and examine our hypotheses.
Findings
The results of this study find that if business groups’ marketing or operational capabilities are strong they should adopt a high level of diversification strategy and if business groups’ R&D capability is strong they should adopt a low level one. The results of this study also show that the endogenous problem of industry diversification exists, and needs to be considered. Moreover, our finding confirms the importance of capability–strategy fit, which, in turn, can achieve better performance.
Practical implications
On average, high industry diversification groups perform better than low industry diversification groups after controlling for endogeneity issues. Business groups can achieve better performance if their strategy choices match the capabilities they encounter. Managers should pay attention to strategy-capability fit issues. Specifically, they should review their organizational capabilities as well as check their strategies within firms.
Originality/value
This study is one of the first that attempts to explore the endogenous role of diversification strategy choices, and empirical examine strategy-capability fit on business group performance.

Purpose: The availability of resilient energy infrastructure and services is crucial to achieving sustainable development goals. However, defined and trustworthy definitions of resilience exist solely for engineering and energy systems, particularly in the industrialised world or metropolitan systems. However, no universally accepted definition considers the distinctive characteristics of rural regions in developing economies. To define resilience for rural power systems in developing countries, this chapter synthesises many perspectives on resilience, energy systems, and rural environments.
Methodology: It draws on extensive literature assessments on resilience, particularly concerning energy systems and rural areas, as well as other pre-existing frameworks.
Findings: To account for the unique challenges of electricity supply in rural developing nations, a comprehensive ‘Rural Power System Resilience Framework’ is introduced, including technical, economic, and social resilience.
Social implications: To better understand the elements contributing to the stability of electricity grids in developing nations and rural areas, this resilience framework may be utilised by global markets, system owners and operators, government officials, non-governmental organisations, and communities.
Originality: Through establishing this framework, this study sets the path for developing suitable and ‘effective resilience standards’ tailored for implementation in these rural areas, with the ultimate goal of facilitating the fulfilment of achieving domestic and worldwide sustainability objectives.

Abstract
Purpose
In this paper, the effects of the adhesive and curing agent contents on the tensile strength, bending strength, gas evolution and gas permeability of three-dimensional printed sand molds are studied. A strength model of the three-dimensional printed sand molds is proposed. The multi-material composite sand mold forming test is carried out. In addition, the mesostructure of the sand mold is studied.
Design/methodology/approach
The performances of three-dimensional printed sand mold such as tensile strength, bending strength, gas evolution and gas permeability are studied using the standard test methods. The mesostructure of the sand mold is studied by digital core technology.
Findings
A sand mold strength model based on the resin adhesive content, curing agent content and sand mold compactness are obtained. Two types of multi-material composite three-dimensional printed sand molds are proposed. An increase in the curing agent content in the sand mold widens the mesoscopic characteristic size distribution of the sand mold, and large-sized mesostructures appear, resulting in a decrease in the sand mold bearing capacity.
Practical implications
Process parameters that affect the performance of three-dimensional printed sand mold are revealed. The sand mold bearing curve provides a reference for the ultimate design of three-dimensional printed sand mold.
Originality/value
The paper deals with experimental work on the performance and mesostructure of multi-material composite three-dimensional printed sand mold with different contents of adhesive and curing agent. That gives a perspective on future designs of sand mold based on these principles.

Abstract
Purpose
Energy is a resource of strategic importance for high density cities. International trade reshapes the urban economy and industrial structure of a city, which will indirectly affect energy use. As an international trade hub, Hong Kong relies on the import and export of services. Energy performance in the international trading of these services needs to be properly understood and assessed for Hong Kong’s urban renewal efforts. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
This study evaluates Hong Kong’s embodied energy in service trades based on an input-output analysis. The three criteria used for assessment include trading areas, industry sector and trade balance.
Findings
Analyzed by region, results show that Mainland China and the USA are the two largest sources of embodied energy in imports of services, while Mainland China and Japan are the two largest destinations of exports. In terms of net embodied energy transfer, Hong Kong mainly receives net energy import from Mainland China and the USA and supplies net energy export to Japan, the UK and Taiwan. Among industry sectors, manufacturing services, transport and travel contribute most significantly to the embodied energy in Hong Kong’s imported services, while transport and travel contribute most to the energy embodied in exported services.
Originality/value
This study identifies the characteristics of energy consumption of service trading and establishes a feasible approach to analyze energy performance of service trade in energy-deficient Hong Kong for the first time. It provides necessary understanding and foundation for developing energy strategies in a service-based, high density urban economy.

Purpose
Multi‐criteria decision making exists in the daily lives with broad application backgrounds. Sometimes because of incomplete information, the weights can only be estimated subjectively, which leads to an unsatisfactory result. The purpose of this paper is to describe an interactive technique to decide multi‐criteria weights by multiple decision makers in the condition of incomplete information by means of virtual environment.
Design/methodology/approach
The procedure assumed a problem with n criteria and r decision makers. The algorithms employed are presented.
Findings
It was found that the proposed framework is an effective weight‐deciding tool; the procedure quickly locates excellent compromise weights in a series of test problems.
Originality/value
The methodology helps decision makers determine a most preferred final solution by the virtual environment especially when there is incomplete information. The procedures provide a mechanism to guide the decision makers towards an acceptable compromise solution, without requiring excessive decision maker input. Studies show that the procedure performs well in terms of solution quality, simplicity, computational requirements, convergence and flexibility.

Purpose
This paper aims to develop a flexible manufacturing method for multimaterial sand molds to realize efficient additive manufacturing of multimaterial sand molds.
Design/methodology/approach
To study the influence of multimaterial sand laying process parameters on the quality of powder bed and optimize the design of multimaterial sand laying device. Numerical simulation and X-ray Computed Tomography are used to study the penetration behavior and curing morphology of resin in different sand particles.
Findings
The surface roughness and porosity of the multimaterial powder bed that meet the requirements of sand-based additive manufacturing can be obtained under the optimal printing process, that is, the sanding speed of 140.0 mm/s and sanding roller diameter of 15.0 mm. The resin penetration process of the multimaterial sand molds shows a pattern of transverse expansion and longitudinal penetration. In terms of the resin curing morphology, the maximum thickness of the resin film layer of zircon sand reaches 30.5 ± 1.0 µm, which has the best tensile property, followed by silica sand and the thinnest resin film layer of chromite sand.
Originality/value
In this work, a highly flexible integrated combined sand-laying device suitable for multimaterial sand-laying tests is developed, which can obtain a multimaterial powder bed that meets the needs of sand additive manufacturing. Subsequent casting print tests also verify that the program can meet the needs of multimaterial sand mold additive manufacturing.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the circulation of moist silica sand to provide appropriate feeding modes and references for designing the coating device when printing sand mold with line-forming.
Design/methodology/approach
First, this paper briefly introduces sand mold printing with line-forming and the circulation problem brought by moist silica sand. The outlet may be choked due to poor flowability and solidification characteristic, resulting in poor dimensional tolerance and even production failure. Then, based on circulation modeling, a series of feeding modes is proposed to guarantee adequate feeding, avoid solidification and ensure successful fabrication. Finally, the GUI of control software is developed, including slicing, path planning and the function of virtual printing.
Findings
Several feeding modes of moist silica sand are put forward to avoid the choke.
Research limitations/implications
The authors will further investigate the flowability of furan no-bake sand based on experiments.
Originality/value
This paper is going to provide references for the novel design of nozzle, prototype and sand mold printing, influencing significantly on mold manufacturing and the casting industry. This research applies equally to equipment having the circulation of high moist particles with solidification features.

Purpose
Many online review sites, such as TripAdivisor.com, encourage review posters to upload a profile photo to improve the perceived reliability of online reviews. This study aims to examine the roles of reviewer profile photos in the online review generation and consumption processes.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected via Amazon MTurk. Two experimental studies were conducted. Study 1 had a sample size of 106 respondents. In Study 1, this paper examined the role of a reviewer profile photo in the online review generation process. Study 2 had a sample size of 482 respondents. In Study 2, this paper examined the role of a reviewer profile photo in the online review consumption process under two different circumstances, namely, comprehensive and incomprehensive review text.
Findings
The findings show that reviewer profile photos play different roles when consumers generate online reviews versus when they consume reviews. In the review generation process, reviewers are more likely to upload a profile photo to improve the credibility of their reviews. On the other hand, in the review consumption process, reviewer profile photos do not contribute to an increase in the perceived review helpfulness.
Originality/value
If the readers have difficulty processing the review content, review profile photos play a critical role in determining perceived review helpfulness. This study provides both theoretical and managerial implications by indicating how reviewer profile photos play different roles in online review posting and consuming behavior.
