Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to shed light on the risk structure in the presence of Islamic banking. The author concentrates on the relationship between Islamic banking and conventional banking in Turkey. Islamic banking and conventional banking are considered to be different kinds of sources for funding. Returns in the conventional banking are expected to be heavily influenced by the interest rate in the money market. However, Islamic banking returns are interest-free so that interest rate changes are not expected to affect the deposit returns in Islamic banks. Interest rates in the economy are a proxy to highlight the general risk level of the economy. By looking at the causal relationship between the deposit returns of both Islamic banks and conventional banks, it is possible to address the different types of banking in the general risk structure of the economy. This is one of the first studies to address the mentioned difference in banking sector in Turkish economy.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper tries to identify the direction of causality between Islamic and conventional banking term deposit rates by means of Granger Causality. Also, Granger Causality test results will guide to explore the Islamic and conventional banking deposit return linkages. The author has extended the study with vector autoregressive analysis to understand the correlation structure between conventional deposit rates and the profit–loss sharing ratio of Islamic Banks. The author has also extended this study with impulse response functions to see whether the shocks hitting into the conventional banking affect Islamic banking and vice versa.

Findings

The results suggest that there is no significant clear relationship between both banking sectors. This result can be interpreted, as Islamic banks do not adjust their profit–loss sharing (PLS) ratios pegged to the interest rate offered by conventional banks. Also, conventional banks determine their interest rate without any connection to the Islamic banking PLS ratios. Overall results of this study contradict the findings of studies which conclude that Islamic banking might not be different from the conventional banking. It is reported that inferences from pair-wise Granger causality alone might be spurious, as the analysis based on non-stationary series can be a consequence of time functional characteristics of the time series.

Social implications

The results can be taken as counter evidence to the hypothesis “Islamic banks determine their PLS ratios based on the interest rates offered by conventional banks”. This address that the Islamic banks may offer alternative financing methodology which has different procedure. Hence, Islamic finance can be taken as an alternative method with its asset-based healthier structure.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies to address the Islamic versus interest-based banking difference in banking sector in Turkish economy. This paper tries to identify the direction of causality between Islamic and conventional banking term deposit rates by means of Granger causality.

Abstract

Agriculture is an activity that plays an important role in human life. Similarly, the agricultural sector plays an important role in the national economy. One of the biggest problems of the agricultural sector is the carbon gas it produces during production. Fertilizing activities and tools used in plowing the fields cause this gas to be produced. The release of the said gas into nature causes serious damage to the environment. Therefore, carbon emissions in the agricultural sector are of vital importance. In line with this purpose, it is aimed to determine the most appropriate strategy for carbon emission in this study. As a result of the DEMATEL analysis, it was seen that the most appropriate strategy was effective regulations and auditing.

Abstract

This chapter aims to identify new perspectives of geothermal energy investments. For this purpose, all studies in the Web of Science regarding the geothermal energy are taken into consideration. These studies are evaluated with the help of text-mining approach. In this framework, most frequently stated words, two words, and three words are identified. It is concluded that technological development with respect to the geothermal energy is an important issue in this framework. After that, it is also determined that risk is another important factor in this regard. Finally, new implications regarding the geothermal energy are also considered by the researchers. Geothermal energy has a positive contribution to solve many different problems, such as energy dependency, current account deficit problem, and carbon emission. Hence, this study generated the significant issues to improve these investments. While considering the results, it is understood that technological developments related to the geothermal energy projects should be followed effectively. In addition, an effective risk evaluation should be conducted before implementing these projects.

Abstract

Today, the demand for renewable energy investments is increasing due to the increase in the world population and the rapid depletion of resources. Renewable energy investments are seen as an area that requires more technical knowledge and experience than nonrenewable energy investments. For this reason, qualified workforce is important in this field. The aim of our study is to reveal the criteria by which renewable energy investments are effective on qualified labor supply. According to the results of our study, in which the analytic hierarchy process method was used, the criterion with the highest weight was determined as “harmonizing universities with undergraduate and graduate level education and internship opportunities.” When this criterion is taken into account, the implementation of policies toward university education in this field together with the renewable energy investments of the countries will positively affect the qualified labor supply.

Abstract

Purpose

Health technologies are an issue that directly affects the sustainability and quality of health services. Due to budget constraints, it is not financially possible for businesses to apply comprehensive improvement strategies to all these criteria. In this case, it is possible for businesses to implement more priority strategies. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to evaluate the important performance indicators of health technology investments.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, with the help of the artificial intelligence system, a decision matrix is established. Secondly, spherical fuzzy total order of preference decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory methodology is taken into consideration for weighting the criteria. Thirdly, emerging seven countries are ranked by using spherical fuzzy MultiAtributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA).

Findings

The findings demonstrate that the criteria of health policies and research and development are defined as the most significant factor in this regard. China and Turkey are also found to be the most successful emerging countries with respect to the performance of health technology investments.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this study is that a novel decision-making model is generated by integrating artificial methodology into the spherical fuzzy sets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to discover the factors affecting customer delight, satisfaction and dissatisfaction in fine dining experiences (FDEs).

Design/methodology/approach

Online user generated 2,585 reviews on TripAdvisor for 46 five-star hotel restaurants operating in Istanbul were analyzed with the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm.

Findings

LDA created nine, eight and seven topics for delight, satisfaction and dissatisfaction, respectively. The most salient topics for customer delight, satisfaction and dissatisfaction in FDEs are staff (17.3%), view (19%), and food quality (23%), respectively.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few studies investigating customer delight and satisfaction together. The study shows that FDEs can be analyzed with text mining techniques. Moreover, the study contributes to the literature on customer delight by adding staff topic as an antecedent.
