Abstract
Purpose
Agility and sustainability are different manufacturing paradigms. Ideally, companies should merge the two concepts so as to enhance competitive advantage. Agility, which has evolved from lean manufacturing, is the ability of an enterprise to respond quickly to a wide range of customer demands. On the other hand sustainability is a condition in which a company optimizes economic, social and environmental factors by taking into account indirect and long-term consequences. Merging the two concepts could result in holistically improving the system, by fulfilling performance without depleting available resources. Thus, identifying and simultaneously improving two areas with common goals could lead to developing a successful and an emerging enterprise. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors identify agility-sustainability criteria which complement each other from amongst a set of differentiating criteria. The conceptual model is built by integrating five enablers with 25 criteria and 75 attributes. The combined criteria are modeled using graph theory which considers interdependencies and contributing factors on the organization. Within each enabler, the authors investigate the interdependencies between criteria and focus further on those that have potential to improve overall score. The methodology was applied in a manufacturing organization that operates on ad hoc basis depending on projects’ availability.
Findings
The model determines a range of values for extreme scenarios under theoretical and practical situations, along with the current level of business. The scenarios are tested for assessing performance by identifying the gaps in the weaker areas.
Research limitations/implications
Approach can serve as a managerial tool for monitoring performance of the organization along agility and sustainability dimensions. Further, government entities can use the approach in devising policy for improving economies by considering holistic approach rather than only environmental aspect. Biased and conflicting opinions of experts might deter chances for comprehensive and consistent decision.
Originality/value
The study integrates a framework for modeling and performance evaluation for a system that incorporates agility and sustainability characteristics. The study will enable practicing managers and decision makers to identify suitable characteristics that would simultaneously improve an organization’s agile performance by considering aspects of sustainability.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report a study on the application of interpretative structural modelling (ISM) integrated with multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques for enabling the sustainability supplier selection.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, two approaches of hybrid MCDM methods are followed and the selection of sustainable supplier was based on the comparative results obtained from both the methods. The first hybrid approach is ISM – analytic network process (ANP) – ELimination and Et Choice Translating REality (ELECTRE II) and the second hybrid approach is ISM – ANP – Vlse Kriterijumska Optimizacija Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). ISM was used to identify the inter relationship between the criteria. Inter-relationship of criteria obtained from ISM will serve as an input for ANP. The weights obtained from ANP will be used in ELECTRE II and VIKOR. ELECTRE II is an outranking method, whereas VIKOR is a compromise ranking method; comparison of both the methods was carried out in this study.
Findings
In this study, two modules ISM–ANP – ELECTRE and ISM–ANP – VIKOR were compared for the problem of sustainable supplier selection. ELECTRE results with a single solution showed that Supplier 2 can be selected as the best supplier; VIKOR result shows that Supplier 1 and Supplier 2 can be selected as the best suppliers.
Originality/value
The selection of sustainable supplier considering the interrelationship of criteria using ISM and ranking the alternatives using compromise and outranking techniques was found to be original and novel contribution of the author.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report a research on application of ORESTE (Organization, Rangement Et Synthese De Donnees Relationnelles, when translated into English means organization, storage and summarizing data relational) for agile concept selection.
Design/methodology/approach
The concept selection problem has been formulated as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem to select the best concept design of the rotary switch component. ORESTE has been used as solution methodology. The selected concept design alternatives were subjected to implementation.
Findings
As ORESTE is a preferential outranking method, it uses ordinal data, enabling decision makers in situations where practically sufficient data are not available. This paper uses ORESTE for agile concept selection where gathering sufficient data is difficult. Also, the results generated by ORESTE have been compared with technique for order performance by similarity to an ideal solution.
Research limitations/implications
In the present study, ORESTE has been applied for concept selection of rotary switch component. In future, more number of studies need to be conducted to select more concept design alternatives where getting prior information is difficult or consumes more time to ensure practical effectiveness of ORESTE.
Practical implications
The application of ORESTE for concept design selection enabled the practitioners to select the best concept with ordinal data and also enabled scope for indifferentiability and incomparableness of any two alternatives in the final outranking.
Originality/value
Formulation of MCDM problem for agile concept selection and solution generation using ORESTE is the original contribution of the authors.

Abstract
Purpose
International Journal of Lean Six Sigma (IJLSS) has completed a decade. To celebrate the same, this study aims to review the articles published in IJLSS from its inception to the year 2020. The journal’s trends and professional impact over the years are investigated and potential future research directions are proposed.
Design/methodology/approach
A bibliometric analysis comprising of citation, co-citation and keyword co-occurrence methods is used on all the articles published in IJLSS till the year 2020. Content analysis is further done to analyse the type of research, type of industry studied and the articles’ target audience.
Findings
The journal has improved its reputation, productivity and impact over the years. Currently, studies published in IJLSS have been cited more than 5,000 times, with the most prominent themes being Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and Lean in manufacturing and services. Researchers from India, the USA and the UK have contributed a significant number of publications. Most of the work published is case-based. There is a need for more empirical or survey-based research having high generalizability. Future studies should also focus on integrating LSS with emerging topics such as sustainability, Industry 4.0 and the like.
Research limitations/implications
The study provides evidence of the impact of IJLSS and highlights the trend in the domain of LSS. It can be of use for the editorial board members to identify potential areas to focus on in the future. Researchers can use it to further their research by working on the research gaps identified.
Originality/value
This paper is the first to trace the progress of IJLSS from its inception till the year 2020.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a comprehensive model for fitness evaluation and to determine fitness index using fuzzy methods.
Design/methodology/approach
The conceptual model for fitness evaluation was developed by literature review. The case study was conducted in an Indian pump manufacturing company. The assessment of fitness index was done using multi-grade fuzzy and fuzzy logic approaches. The fitness index was computed. The obstacles were identified and analysed for improvements.
Findings
The fitness index was found to be 6.8724 which revealed that the organization was fit. Euclidean distance method was used to match fitness index with fitness level. The weaker attributes were identified and proposals were derived for improvements.
Research limitations/implications
The developed model was test implemented in a single manufacturing organization. The study could be extended for other organizations in future.
Practical implications
The case study was conducted in an Indian pump manufacturing organization. The insights derived from the study have practical propensity.
Originality/value
The model for fitness evaluation and assessment of fitness index were original and novel contributions of the authors.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report a case study in which artificial neural network (ANN) has been used for performing fuzzy logic based leanness assessment.
Design/methodology/approach
Leanness is the measure of lean manufacturing practice. Fuzzy logic has been used for the calculation of leanness. To improve the effectiveness of computation, ANN tool has been used in this study. The network has been modeled, trained and simulated using the MATLAB software.
Findings
The disadvantages associated with the scoring method has been overcome by the deployment of fuzzy logic. The problem associated with manual computation has been overcome by the application of ANN. The simulated model has been validated by measuring the leanness level of the case organization.
Research limitations/implications
The case study has been carried out in a single electronic switches manufacturing organization. In the fuzzy logic approach, triangular fuzzy numbers are being used in the present study.
Practical implications
The paper reports a case study conducted in an Indian transformers manufacturing organisation. Hence, the results derived from the study are validated in a real time manufacturing environment.
Originality/value
The idea of applying ANN for fuzzy logic based leanness assessment is the original contribution of the authors.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a decision support system (DSS) for multi grade fuzzy leanness assessment (MGFLA) (DSS‐MGFLA).
Design/methodology/approach
The assessment of leanness gains vital importance. Due to the drawbacks associated with conventional approaches, fuzzy methods are gaining importance. In this context, multi‐grade fuzzy method has been used for leanness assessment. Since the computation is time consuming and error‐prone, a computerized DSS known as DSS‐MGFLA has been developed.
Findings
DSS‐MGFLA enables the accurate evaluation of leanness. Besides assessing leanness, DSS also enables the identification of improvement areas. The DSS has been validated in an Indian relays manufacturing organization. Based on the validation, its practical feasibility has been ensured.
Research limitations/implications
DSS‐MGFLA has been validated in a single manufacturing organization for its working feasibility. But the findings could be extended to similar manufacturing organizations.
Originality/value
The idea of developing DSS for leanness assessment is novel, original and unique contribution of authors.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a new framework to evaluate the sustainability of product at design and development phase in the modern manufacturing system.
Design/methodology/approach
A detailed examination over the literatures reveals that the current frameworks that are available to measure overall product sustainability do not effectively address all aspects of sustainability to full extent. An integrated model encompassing the approaches such as environmentally conscious quality function deployment (ECQFD), life cycle assessment (LCA) and sustainability analysis has been proposed.
Findings
The eco-friendly option as well as the component with high remanufacturing feasibility has been found. Also, the environmental impact of the component has been found.
Research limitations/implications
The integrated model has been test implemented in a single manufacturing organisation. In future, more number of studies could be conducted to ensure the practical feasibility.
Practical implications
The integrated model has been applied to an Indian organization manufacturing automotive assemblies. The case study also addresses the re-manufacturing feasibility of the product with validating the results at each step.
Originality/value
The study is the outcome of deploying integrated sustainability framework model in a manufacturing organisation. Hence, the contributions and findings are original.

The purpose of this paper is to report a study in which analytical network process (ANP) was used for selecting the best concept from sustainability view point.
Design/methodology/approach
The concept selection in the sustainability viewpoint is a typical multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem involving complex interrelationship among the decision criteria. The formulated MCDM problem of sustainable concept selection was solved using ANP. The sensitivity analysis was also being conducted to validate the results.
Findings
The interrelationship among the decision criteria was analyzed using ANP, and the best alternative was selected based on the computation of Product Sustainability Weighted Index (PSWI). The selected best alternative was subjected to implementation in the case organization.
Research limitations/implications
The study deals with the formulation of sustainable concept selection as a typical MCDM problem and providing solutions using ANP. The best alternative “weight reduction” was subjected to implementation. The developed MCDM problem also could be solved using hybrid MCDM methods.
Practical implications
The study focuses on selecting the best sustainability concept for an Indian automotive component manufacturing organization. Hence, the inferences being derived from the study are practically feasible and contribute toward the improvement of product sustainability.
Originality/value
The formulation of a hierarchical model for sustainable concept selection as MCDM problem and generating solution using ANP is the contribution of the authors.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report a case study in which financial feasibility integrated quality function deployment (QFD) approach was implemented.
Design/methodology/approach
Customer complaints were systematically gathered. The house of quality (HoQ) matrix was developed. The technical descriptors were prioritized and subjected to the financial feasibility study. The cost calculations were carried out and the actions were derived. A set of value engineering (VE) principles was used during this case study.
Findings
The study reported in this paper indicated the need for integrating financial feasibility study with QFD for enhancing the effectiveness of the method. The measures taken to prevent the customer complaints will be of considerable value to the manufacturing organizations.
Research limitations/implications
During the conduct of case study, high-cost factors restricted the selection of materials which would exhibit higher performance. The case study was carried out in a single electronic switches manufacturing organization.
Practical implications
The manufacturing costs incurred have been reduced by incorporating changes in the part material. The outcomes of the study have been considered for further implementation in the case organisation which indicated the practicality of the study.
Originality/value
The concept of apportionment of HoQ cost developed with the idea of integrating the same with QFD is the original contribution of the authors.
