Abstract

Purpose

Current practices in data classification and retrieval have experienced a surge in the use of multimedia content. Identification of desired information from the huge image databases has been facing increased complexities for designing an efficient feature extraction process. Conventional approaches of image classification with text-based image annotation have faced assorted limitations due to erroneous interpretation of vocabulary and huge time consumption involved due to manual annotation. Content-based image recognition has emerged as an alternative to combat the aforesaid limitations. However, exploring rich feature content in an image with a single technique has lesser probability of extract meaningful signatures compared to multi-technique feature extraction. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the possibilities of enhanced content-based image recognition by fusion of classification decision obtained using diverse feature extraction techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

Three novel techniques of feature extraction have been introduced in this paper and have been tested with four different classifiers individually. The four classifiers used for performance testing were K nearest neighbor (KNN) classifier, RIDOR classifier, artificial neural network classifier and support vector machine classifier. Thereafter, classification decisions obtained using KNN classifier for different feature extraction techniques have been integrated by Z-score normalization and feature scaling to create fusion-based framework of image recognition. It has been followed by the introduction of a fusion-based retrieval model to validate the retrieval performance with classified query. Earlier works on content-based image identification have adopted fusion-based approach. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, fusion-based query classification has been addressed for the first time as a precursor of retrieval in this work.

Findings

The proposed fusion techniques have successfully outclassed the state-of-the-art techniques in classification and retrieval performances. Four public data sets, namely, Wang data set, Oliva and Torralba (OT-scene) data set, Corel data set and Caltech data set comprising of 22,615 images on the whole are used for the evaluation purpose.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, fusion-based query classification has been addressed for the first time as a precursor of retrieval in this work. The novel idea of exploring rich image features by fusion of multiple feature extraction techniques has also encouraged further research on dimensionality reduction of feature vectors for enhanced classification results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the work is to design a flapping wing that generates net positive propulsive force and vertical force over a flapping cycle operating at a given freestream velocity. In addition, an optimal wing is designed based on the comparison of the force estimated from the quasi‐steady theory, with the wind‐tunnel experiments. Based on the designed wing configuration, a flapping wing ornithopter is fabricated.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a theoretical aerodynamic model of the design of an ornithopter with specific twist distribution that results generation of substantial net positive vertical force and thrust over a cycle at non‐zero advance ratio. The wing has a specific but different twist distribution during the downstroke and the upstroke that maintains the designed angle of attack during the strokes. The wing is divided into spanwise strips and Prandtl's lifting line theory is applied to estimate aerodynamic forces with the assumptions of quasi‐steady flow and the wings are without any dihedral or anhedral. Spanwise circulation distribution is obtained and hence lift is calculated. The lift is resolved along the freestream velocity and perpendicular to the freestream velocity to obtain vertical force and propulsive thrust force. Experiments are performed in a wind tunnel to find the forces generated in a flapping cycle which compares well with the theoretical estimation at low flying speeds.

Findings

The estimated aerodynamic force indicates whether the wing geometry and operating conditions are sufficient to carry the weight of the vehicle for a sustainable flight. The variation of the aerodynamic forces with varying flapping frequencies and freestream velocities has been illustrated and compared with experimental data that shows a reasonable match with the theoretical estimations. Based on the calculations a prototype has been fabricated and successfully flown.

Research limitations/implications

The theory does not take into account the unsteady effects and estimates the aerodynamic forces at wing level condition. It doesn’t predict stall and ignores structural deformations due to aerodynamic loads. The airfoil section is only specified by the chord, zero lift angle of attack, lift slope, profile drag coefficient and angle of attack as given inputs. To fabricate a light weight wing that maintains a very accurate geometric twist and camber distribution as per the theoretical requirement is challenging.

Practical implications

Useful for designing ornithopter wing (preferably bigger) involving an unswept rigid spar with flapping and twisting.

Originality/value

The novelty of the present wing design is the appropriate spanwise geometric twisting about the leading edge spar.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the existing literature in human resource analytics and highlights the future research agenda and trends in the same context. It deals with evaluating regional distribution, identifying key authors, publications, journals and keyword occurrences while examining current literature.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 127 articles exported from the Scopus database were systematically analyzed using bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer, including performance analysis and science mapping of the literature studied.

Findings

This research postulates the inconsistency between the number of publications and citations received by an author. There was an increase in collaborative research over the years. Human Resource Management Review was regarded as the most influential journal with maximum citation. Maximum publications came from Asian countries. The study revealed that the author with maximum citation were mostly the first authors of the most cited documents.

Practical implications

This research may be beneficial for both researchers and human resource (HR) practitioners because it identifies the research gaps and research needs in the HR analytics domain. Besides, this study recognizes the patterns in HR analytics literature that helps researchers better understand the subject area.

Originality/value

This research incorporates bibliometric analysis for analyzing HR analytics literature to establish a more exhaustive and systematic understanding of the research area. This research contributes to the existing body of literature and assists fellow researchers in future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a multi-level hierarchical framework (evaluation index system) toward evaluating an “appraisement index” from the prospectus of measuring and monitoring resilient performance of the candidate industry.

Design/methodology/approach

In this reporting, vagueness, imprecision, as well as inconsistency associated with subjective evaluation information (aligned with ill-defined assessment indices of SC resilience performance), has been tackled by the application of fuzzy theory.

Findings

Subjective evaluation information (expressed in linguistic term) acquired from the committee of decision makers (called expert group), against different resilience indices/metrics, has been fruitfully explored through the proposed fuzzy-based resilience performance appraisement module. Finally, a case study from an Indian automobile company has been conducted from the perspective of checking effectiveness of the proposed methodology for evaluation of appraisement index indicating SC resilience extent.

Originality/value

This methodology might be successfully applied to help other decision-making problems from the perspective of performance appraisal and benchmarking of candidate alternatives/choices under predefined criteria and subjective evaluation circumstances.

Abstract

Purpose

The recent global market trend is seemed enforcing existing manufacturing organizations (as well as service sectors) to improve existing supply chain systems or to take up/adapt advanced manufacturing strategies for being competitive. The concept of the agile supply chain (ASC) has become increasingly important as a means of achieving a competitive edge in highly turbulent business environments. An ASC is a dynamic alliance of member enterprises, the formation of which is likely to introduce velocity, responsiveness, and flexibility into the manufacturing system. In ASC management, supplier/partner selection is a key strategic concern. Apart from traditional supplier/partner selection criteria; different agility-related criteria/attributes need to be taken under consideration while selecting an appropriate supplier in an ASC. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Therefore, evaluation and selection of potential supplier in an ASC have become an important multi-criteria decision making problem. Most of the evaluation criteria being subjective in nature; traditional decision-making approaches (mostly dealing with objective data) fail to solve this problem. However, fuzzy set theory appears an important mean to tackle with vague and imprecise data given by the experts. In this work, application potential of the fuzzy multi-level multi-criteria decision making (FMLMCDM) approach proposed by Chu and Velásquez (2009) and Chu and Varma (2012) has been examined and compared to that of Fuzzy-techniques for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and Fuzzy-MOORA in the context of supplier selection in ASC.

Findings

It has been observed that similar ranking order appears in FMLMCDM as well as Fuzzy-TOPSIS. In Fuzzy-MOORA, the best alternative appears same as in case of FMLMCDM as well as Fuzzy-TOPSIS; but for other alternatives ranking order differs. A comparative analysis has also been made in view of working principles of FMLMCDM, Fuzzy-TOPSIS as well as Fuzzy-MOORA.

Originality/value

Application feasibility of FMLMCDM approach has been verified in comparison with Fuzzy-TOPSIS and Fuzzy-MOORA in the context of agile supplier selection.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on foreign direct investment (FDI) in Arab economies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the pooled ordinary least squares estimator, alongside panel static techniques, two-stage least squares estimation and the system generalized method of moments estimator, to ensure robust results. The analysis is based on a panel data set from 18 Arab countries over the period 2017–2022.

Findings

The study reveals a significant negative relationship between COVID-19 and FDI inflows and outflows. Higher infection rates lead to substantial reductions in FDI activity, highlighting the pandemic’s disruptive effect on the region’s investment landscape. Government responses, including lockdown measures and fiscal stimulus, are crucial in shaping FDI dynamics, with varying impacts across different sectors and economic contexts.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, emphasizing the need for effective pandemic preparedness, strategic economic growth initiatives, exchange rate management and labor market reforms. These measures are essential to foster FDI and ensure economic stability in Arab economies.

Originality/value

This study is the first to examine the impact of COVID-19 on FDI in Arab economies, addressing a significant research gap. It contributes to the broader discourse on the pandemic’s economic effects by offering comprehensive insights into how the crisis has affected FDI flows. By incorporating a range of COVID-19 pandemic indicators, analyzing government response impacts and exploring sectoral and economic heterogeneity, this research enriches our understanding of the multifaceted financial implications of the pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, in turbulent and highly competitive marketplace, organizational sustainability in the long run necessitates the adaptation of appropriate supply chain (SC) strategies. Hence, traditional SC philosophies are being restructured nowadays to fulfill different business goals. Articulation of lean, agile, green and resilient SC strategies could amply be found in the literature; however, integration of those in various modes may definitely improve overall SC’s performance. Past researchers have focused on the integration of lean, agile and green paradigms together to ensure an efficient SC construct. But the integration of green and resilient paradigm has been rarely reported in the literature. To deal with the unexpected situations/disturbances in the SC management along with embedded environmental consciousness, the purpose of this paper is to integrate the resilient SC and green SC philosophies; thereof to evaluate of an overall SC “g-resilient”/“ecosilient” index for a case automotive company.

Design/methodology/approach

A consolidated list consisting of supply chain practices (combining green and resilient performance indices) have been articulated in this study. A decision-making group has been assumed; where, the role of the decision makers is to provide individuals’ judgment (subjective opinion) toward determining the weight and the rating (performance extent) of various performance indices. The overall g-resilient SC performance has been determined by computing a unique ecosilient (g-resilient) index. The concepts of fuzzy performance importance index along with Degree of Similarity (DOS) adapted from fuzzy set theory (FST) have been applied to rank various performance indicators. In addition to that, the interrelationships amongst various g-resilient indices (performance indicators) have also been established through interpretive structural modeling.

Findings

By exploring the concept of fuzzy DOS, outlined in the trapezoidal fuzzy numbers set theory, various SC performance indicators have been classified into three distinct performance categories/levels (namely regretful, tolerable, and satisfactory). Such categorization has been found helpful in order to determine ill (poor) performing SC areas, which need future improvement toward boosting up the overall g-resilient index of the company’s SC.

Originality/value

The study bears significant managerial implications. The decision support framework suggested in this paper is found capable enough to determine a unique index known as “ecosilient (g-resilient) index” toward exploring “greenness” as well as “resiliency” for the case automotive company. Application potential of the proposed ecosilient (g-resilient) index evaluation system has been explored in this reporting. The recommended framework enables the managers to cope up with unexpected disruptions and found helpful in order to reduce the environmental impacts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of decision-makers’ (DM) risk bearing attitudes and the effect of the decision-making environment on estimating the overall degree of agility of an organization. The present study explores an extended agility model in a specific organization's hierarchy and reflects how decision-making attitudes alter an organizational agility scenario.

Design/methodology/approach

The concept of fuzzy logic has been explored in this paper. Based on DMs’ linguistic judgments, a fuzzy appropriateness rating as well as fuzzy priority weights have been determined for different levels of agile system hierarchy. Using a multi-grade fuzzy approach the overall agility index has been determined. The concept of fuzzy numbers ranking has been explored to show the effect of decision-making attitudes on agility estimations.

Findings

Decision-making attributes, e.g. the category of DM (neutral, risk-averse and risk-taking), affect the quantitative evaluation of the overall agility degree, which is correlated with a predefined agility measurement scale.

Research limitations/implications

This study explores a triangular fuzzy membership function to express DMs’ linguistic judgments as fuzzy representations. Apart from triangular fuzzy numbers, trapezoidal and Gaussian fuzzy numbers may also be used for agility evaluation. The model may be used in other agile industries for benchmarking and selection of the best approach.

Practical implications

Selecting the right decision-making group to compute and analyze the agility level for a particular organization is an important managerial decision. In the case of benchmarking of various agile enterprises the decision-making group bearing the same attitude should be utilized.

Originality/value

Agile system modeling and development of agility appraisement platforms have been attempted by previous researchers while the influence of DMs’ risk bearing attitudes, and the effect of the decision-making environment on estimating the overall degree of agility, have rarely been studied. In this context, the authors explore an exhaustive agility model for implementing in a case study and reveal how decision-making attitudes alter organizational agility scenarios.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chains (SCs) have become increasingly vulnerable to catastrophic events/disruptions that may be natural or man-made. Hurricanes, tsunamis and floods are natural disasters, whereas man-made disasters may be strikes, terrorist attacks, etc. Failure at any point in the SC network has the potential to cause the entire network to fail. SCs must therefore be properly designed to survive well in the disruption scenario. The capability of successful survival (of the firm’s SC) against those adverse events/happenings is termed as resilience; and, the SC designed under resilience consideration is called a resilient SC. Effective supplier selection is considered as a key strategic consideration in SC management. It is felt that apart from considering traditional suppliers selection criterions, suppliers’ resiliency strategy must be incorporated while selecting a potential supplier which can provide best support to the firm even in the disaster/disruption scenario. The purpose of this paper is to focus aspects of evaluation and selection of resilience supplier by considering general as well as resiliency strategy, simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, subjectivity associated with ill-defined (vague) evaluation information has been tackled through logical exploration of fuzzy numbers set theory. Application of VIKOR embedded with fuzzy mathematics has been utilized here. Sensitivity analysis has been performed to reflect the effect of decision-makers’ (DM) risk bearing attitude in selecting the best potential supplier in a resilient SC. A case empirical example has also been presented.

Findings

The work attempts to focus on a decision-making procedural hierarchy towards effective supplier selection in a resilient SC. The work exhibits application potential of VIKOR method integrated with fuzzy set theory to select potential supplier based on general strategy as well as resiliency strategy. The final supplier selection score (obtained by considering general strategy) and that of obtained by analyzing resiliency strategy have been combined to get a final compromise solution. The decision-support framework thus reported here also considers DMs’ risk bearing attitude.

Practical implications

The study bears significant impact to the industry managers who are trying to adapt resiliency strategy in their SC followed by potential supplier selection in the context of resilient SC.

Originality/value

Exploration of VIKOR embedded with fuzzy set theory towards suppliers’ evaluation and selection by considering general and resiliency criteria both. The decision-support module(s) adapted in this paper considers DMs’ risk bearing attitude to arrive the best compromise solution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to adapt integrated hierarchical evaluation platform (associated with “green” performance indices) toward evaluation and selection of alternative suppliers under green supply chain (GSC) philosophy.

Design/methodology/approach

In this context, incompleteness, vagueness, imprecision, as well as inconsistency associated with subjective evaluation information aligned with ill-defined suppliers’ assessment indices has been tackled through logical exploration of fuzzy set theory. A fuzzy-based multi-level multi-criteria decision-making (FMLMCDM) approach as proposed by Chu and Varma (2012), has been case empirically studied in the context of green suppliers selection.

Findings

Result obtained thereof, has been compared to that of fuzzy-TOPSIS to validate application potential of the aforementioned FMLMCDM approach.

Originality/value

The proposed method has been found fruitful from managerial implication viewpoint.
