Abstract
Purpose
The Royal College of Surgeons recognises patient handover as the point at which patients are collectively at their most vulnerable. Concerns were raised in a London teaching hospital surgical department regarding an unstructured handover system, poor access to relevant clinical information, and inadequate weekend staffing. A quality improvement programme was designed and implemented to respond to these concerns and improve patient safety. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
A structured questionnaire was distributed to staff and results used to construct a diagram outlining the main factors influencing weekend patient safety. This framework was used to design changes, including a new electronic handover tool, regular handover meetings and additional weekend staff. Regular staff training was provided, and success was assessed in a continuous audit cycle with the results fed back to team leaders.
Findings
Over a three-month period, the handover meeting recorded an attendance rate consistently above 80 per cent. The electronic handover entries were scored according to seven criteria (correct layout; key information, i.e.: patient location, clinical priority, active issues, resuscitation status, test results and weekend plan), averaging between 42.2 and 92.9 per cent, with progressive improvement seen over the assessment period. Weekend staffing was increased by 50 per cent, allowing a dedicated team to care for stable inpatients and to oversee discharges.
Originality/value
This improvement programme delivered lasting and significant change in response to staff concerns. It resulted in a more structured and reliable weekend system and established key mechanisms for dynamic performance feedback.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the problem of power imbalance within decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and propose potential solutions that could contribute to enhancing the democratic nature of DAOs.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, the authors apply a qualitative methodology. Using a thematic coding analysis, the authors process data collected from interviews with 11 experts.
Findings
Multiple factors contribute to the perceived lack of democracy within DAOs, such as token concentration and effective stakeholder communication. Next, quadratic voting has the potential to enhance democracy within DAOs, but this mechanism must be implemented mindfully. Finally, the results were nuanced when it comes to the effectiveness of liquid democracy in DAOs to enhance voter participation and representation.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is one of the first research contributions to propose recommendations to address the power imbalance within DAOs and to contribute to the advancement of decentralized decision-making structures.

Abstract
Purpose
Taurine (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid; C2H7NO3S) is a nonprotein sulfur-containing β-amino acid present in nearly all mammalian tissues and the most ubiquitous free endogenous biomolecule in human cells. Taurine is commonly known as a conditionally essential amino acid because taurine is one of the few amino acids that are not incorporated in protein synthesis. The purpose of this study is to review the existing articles related to taurine and to give an account how useful is taurine to the different body systems. In this thorough overview, taurine is covered in terms of its essentiality, sources, advantages for neonates and the elderly, the effects of taurine deficiency, and the safety and toxicity of taurine supplements.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a narrative review into the subject matter. Published articles were searched on different portals like PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubChem etc. The authors also evaluated the availability of taurine in commercially available energy drinks.
Findings
This comprehensive review, presents the potential clinical benefits and functional properties of taurine as a conditionally essential amino acid. Energy drinks containing taurine (and their concentration) are also reported in this review.
Originality/value
This is the first data that the authors are aware of that shows taurine content in a variety of energy drinks on the market.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to review the literature related to the influence of revenue diversification on banking sector performance. Further, the determination of the scope and the empirical estimation of the revenue diversification is also the area of investigation to synthesis with future research area.
Design/methodology/approach
The systemic literature review process used by Opoku et al. (2015) is applied. In total, 68 Journal articles are studied after applying specified review protocols. The information gathered from the selected articles is presented and summarized in specified tables and charts formats for easy understanding.
Findings
The comprehensive literature review showed that much of the work in this area is done in the USA and the Asian region. To explore the impact of revenue diversification on banking performance in developing countries is a literature gap. While going through the existing literature, it is clear that researchers have not reached at any conclusion about the exact impact of revenue diversification on banking performance. It is also found that non-interest income ratio and Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI) (revenue) index are the most common proxies of revenue diversification. However, other studies also input the HHI (loans) index, number of ATM’s and number of branches as a proxy for diversification.
Research limitations
This systematic literature review is based on specific review protocols, and therefore, it might be possible that some of the important work is not included in it due to time restrictions.
Originality/value
The banking sector has shown tremendous growth in revenue sources in past two decades. Keeping in view the importance of the banking sector within an economy, the dramatic shift of revenue sources and their impact is important to determine that eventually will help to define the future research area. In past research studies, there exists clear disagreement about the possible impact of revenue diversification on banking performance. This systemic literature review is an attempt to draw conclusions about the exact impact of revenue diversification. Therefore, the outcome of the study will be very valuable for both banking practitioners and academicians.
