Abstract

Research methodology

The students should go through the concepts of motivation, leadership, organisational communication, organisational culture, organisational conflict, power and politics and organisational change and development from their course on organisational behaviour.

In Business Communication, the students could review effective communication skills, the process of communication and barriers to communication to prescribe suitable recommendations for the organisation.

In Financial Accounting, the reader should revise the income statement and balance sheet. They can undertake financial analysis on the data presented in the case to analyse the performance of the organisation. The participants may be asked to identify future possible financial risks that may arise.

Case overview/synopsis

The Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Workers Education and Development (DTNBWED) was an autonomous body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. It had been responsible for creating a disciplined and skill-oriented workforce for the organised, unorganised and rural sectors in India. In the past, DTNBWED undertook training programmes to educate and improve the quality of life of workers. However, the objectives were far from being fulfilled because of challenges such as an acute shortage of education officers, a slow recruitment process, communication issues between the ministry and the DTNBWED and a large part of the budget being spent on salaries. The main challenges faced by DTNBWED were the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission and the higher contribution of the Government under a new pension scheme. The DTNBWED faced audit issues, including the absence of an inventory register, non-compliance with accounting rules and statutory norms and inadequate internal audit. The DTNBWED could not shift its headquarters from Nagpur to Delhi because of office politics and differences between the staff and the ministry. The organisation needed a complete reorganisation using principles of change management and agile management. It was recommended that departmental promotion committees review promotions immediately; recruitment of education officers should be done along with post-revival with the Ministry of Finance; rental of offices should be from Government departments only; and the administrative manual and recruitment rules should be revised. These measures would help to overcome the challenges faced by DTNBWED, such as low expenditure on training, poor communication between the ministry and headquarters, vacant top-level posts and low motivation levels among existing officers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the titanium alloy under heat treated condition. Titanium alloy heat treatment, particularly Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy, has been an important field of study due to its wide variety of uses in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical sectors. The mechanical characteristics of titanium alloys are heavily influenced by their microstructure. Cold‐rolled Ti‐alloys have strong bending and tensile strength due to extensive β‐phase precipitation on the α matrix. However, various heat treatment (HT) methods can affect the mechanical characteristics. The current study seeks to investigate the effects of various heat treatment procedures on the microstructural and mechanical changes of Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy, in order to achieve an optimal balance of strength, hardness, and ductility for a variety of real-world applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Three plates of Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy were heated above the β‐transus temperature for a certain period and then cooled via furnace, air, and sand. One extra plate was kept in ‘untreated’ condition and given name ‘as received’ plate. The three heat treated plates were evaluated and compared with ‘as received’ plate based on tensile strength, bending strength, hardness, and microstructural changes.

Findings

A considerable change in orientation of α and β was noted through optical microscopy upon heat treatment. The mechanical testing revealed that all the cooling methods adopted in the study have reduced the UTS and increased the YS of the plates. The ductility of the alloy was primarily enhanced by 'air cooling' and 'sand cooling' methods.

Originality/value

Notably, the hardness test findings indicated a significant drop in hardness for the ‘sand‐cooled’ sample. Furthermore, the ‘air cooled’ sample showed the maximum hardness due to the production of acicular α regions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to find the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical proeprties of aluminum. Aluminum exhibits a good response to heat treatment, especially quenching, according to the mechanical property improvement. The presence and orientation of secondary phases (Al-Fe-Mn-Si) are greatly affected by the quenching process.

Design/methodology/approach

The present work deals with the effect of water quenching on the mechanical properties of welded AA 6061 plates which were joined by using metal inert gas (MIG) welding, tungsten inert gas welding and friction stir welding (FSW). Three tests like tensile, bending and hardness were considered. The microstructural variation was analyzed by optical microscopy and elemental mapping through field emission scanning electron microscope.

Findings

A significant enhancement in the tensile strength and hardness was achieved on postquenched specimens. This improvement in mechanical properties is caused by the distribution of fine alloying elements throughout the metal solution rather than precipitation at the grain boundaries. In comparison to the “untreated specimens,” an improvement of 76.7%, 25.32% and 56.81% in the tensile strength of quenched TIGW, MIGW and FSW specimens, respectively, was observed.

Originality/value

The quenching process has increased the strength of the MIG welded joint over the base metal. The MIG welded joint has a larger flexural modulus than the other two welded plates, according to the results of the bending test. Furthermore, a uniform distribution of hardness was observed in postquenched welded specimens. It was found that welded zone was harder than heat-affected zone. Out of all the specimens, the base metal zone has the lowest hardness.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the efficiency of managing working capital in 1,388 Indian manufacturing firms from 2008 to 2019 and investigate the effects of firm-specific and macro-level determinants on working capital management (WCM) efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study accommodates a slack-based measure (SBM) in data envelopment analysis (DEA) for computing WCM efficiency. Further, we implement a panel data fixed-effects model that controls for heterogeneity across firms in determining the relationships of selected variables with WCM efficiency.

Findings

The results highlight that manufacturing firms operate at around 50 percent efficiency, which is constant throughout the study period. Furthermore, among the selected variables, yield, earnings, age, size, ability to create internal resources, interest rate and gross domestic product (GDP) significantly affect WCM efficiency.

Originality/value

Instead of the traditional models used for assessing efficiency, the SBM-DEA model is unit-invariant and monotone for slacks, implying that it can handle zero and negative data, which overcomes the incapability of prior DEA models. Hence, this provides accurate efficiency scores for robust analysis. Additionally, this paper provides a holistic working capital model recognizing firm-specific and macro-level determinants for a more explicit estimation of the relationship between WCM efficiency and the selected determinants.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of multiple brand celebrity endorsement strategies on firms’ performance and different attributes associated with celebrities on firms’ performance. In this regard, the present study specifically explores the role of celebrity reputation and experience, as well as social media as a promotion platform in influencing the economic effectiveness of multiple brand endorsement strategies, i.e. proportion of brands endorsed in a firms’ brand portfolio.

Design/methodology/approach

Study is based on instrumental variable regression analysis approach and is conducted in one of the emerging markets, i.e. India.

Findings

The findings indicate that firms’ market valuations increase as its proportion of brands endorsed by celebrities increases. Furthermore, popularity reputation of celebrity also influences market valuation, and relationship is positively moderated by celebrity’s experience.

Originality/value

Extant studies have considered one endorsement news of a firm at a time. However, how total proportion of firms’ brand endorsed by celebrities impacts its performance has not been investigated. Furthermore, impact of celebrity traits has been examined only in consumer behavior studies and has been rarely investigated in context of firms’ economic performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the moderating dynamics of social competence in the relationship between intangible resources and the performance of women businesses from an emerging market context. Developed economy literature provides ample evidence of a positive relationship between intangible resources and the performance of women business ventures. Little is known of the complexity of this orthodoxy in developing markets such as Ghana. In particular, this paper investigates the moderating role of social competence in the relationship between intangible resources available to women entrepreneurs and performance.

Design methodology approach

An exploratory sequential mixed method research design was used. First phase involved qualitative data collected through interviews, and the second phase was quantitative data collected from 264 participants. Content analysis and multiple regression analysis were used.

Findings

Social competence is important to the success of women businesses as it influences the outcome of entrepreneurial interactions and communications. Also, it positively moderated the relationship between organisational reputational capital (RC) and women business growth. On the flip side, it negatively moderated the relationship between human capital, social capital, individual RC and women business growth.

Practical implications

To sustainably grow their businesses, women entrepreneurs must ascertain the right level of social competence needed. The utilization of social competence at higher rather than lower levels could mean more costs and more training for which the business may not have immediate use.

Originality value

This paper advocates the need to improve the content of entrepreneurial training packages to include the reinforcement of social competency skills in terms of relationship management as this may be the key to the facilitation of access to resources for innovation and growth.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the crisis faced, strategies adopted, barriers for recovery and the future outlook by the operators of family-owned small foodservice business firms in responses to COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic has unfolded unprecedented challenges, severely disrupted the family-run small foodservice business units and often put them on the brink of closure of business.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology adopted is a qualitative research approach. The data for the research is collected through a semi-structured interview. The data was collected from the 13 family-owned foodservice providers. The data is collected through a semi-structured telephone interview as there is a restriction of travel between different regions.

Findings

The finding reveals that small family-operated foodservice firms faced multiple challenges, including threat for existence, the pressure of fixed cost, feeling unethical, financial instability, uncertainty on future and feeling of loss of goodwill with lenders.

Originality/value

The current research work is the first to discuss the impact of Covid-19 on small family-owned food services businesses in an Indian context.

Abstract

Purpose

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a significant influence on many aspects of life, including education. As a result, the education system in emerging nations such as Bangladesh needs a rapid transition from conventional to technology-based distance learning. This study looks at the current state of higher education and how well online courses that use technology work.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a structural equation model (SEM) to analyze the 392 student records taken from several universities in Bangladesh.

Findings

This research showed that students are more likely to use a digital higher education system if faculty are willing, students are eager and the economy is stable. Students who have had a bad experience with digital learning should know that a virtual evaluation system is needed. The willingness of students to use technology also plays a significant role in whether or not the students will take online classes. The research shows that combining traditional classroom and online learning is the best way to create a long-term learning system.

Originality/value

The model suggested in this study has a big effect, and Bangladesh policymakers should consider this model when planning a new kind of technology-based education.

Abstract

Purpose

Organisations in the past aimed to use technology to improve their processes and services. However, nowadays, their primary focus is on using technology sustainably. Sustainability is crucial to ensure a better and safer future for our environment. One such technology is the Metaverse, which is considered the next step in the growth of the Internet. It combines the real world with the virtual world to create a multi-user environment, allowing users to experience a fully immersive, real-time existence with digital characters, objects, and locations that are often 3D. The Metaverse and sustainability share a strong relationship, as it is expected that the Metaverse will have a significant impact on the material, economic, and social realms, as well as sustainability worldwide. This paper uses bibliometric analysis to understand sustainable metaverse scholarship better and provide an up-to-date account of industry practices.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used the PRISMA approach and bibliometric analysis to analyse and draw conclusions from 2,911 articles retrieved from the Scopus database from 1999 to July 2023. The methodology is divided into four steps: data collection, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation. The current study uses the Bibliometric R-package and VOS viewer software to comprehend sustainable metaverse scholarship.

Findings

The study provides fascinating insights that may assist scholars, industry professionals, and top management in understanding and conceptualising sustainable metaverse in their organisations. The results show that the number of publications has significantly increased from 2015 onwards, reaching a maximum of 601 manuscripts in 2022 with an increasing publication annual growth rate of 29.12%. The United Kingdom, India, China, the USA and Italy were the most productive countries regarding the total number of publications. Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, Current Issues in Tourism, Benchmarking: An International Journal of Production Research and International Journal of Information Management emerged as the top outlets.

Research limitations/implications

The research in sustainable metaverse is underpinned by this study, which aims to understand the trends in this field over the last two decades regarding prolific authors, most influential journals, key themes, and the intellectual and social structure. The study on sustainable metaverse has grown significantly and attracted interest from academia and business since 2015, following its embryonic stage. Consequently, a more in-depth analysis is required to help develop a better understanding of this new field.

Originality/value

The paper focuses on sustainable metaverse through increased interest from 2015 onwards through the literature review. Although the metaverse has already received significant financial and labour investments from businesses and technology firms, various sustainability issues are still present in physical materials. There is a need to assess the achievement of numerous Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using the resources and time put into the metaverse. Furthermore, these findings can guide researchers who want to delve deeper into sustainable metaverse.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors combine institutional theory with resource-based theory to explain how emerging market firms (EMFs) manage their technological knowledge capital by venturing into international markets. The authors further explore the contingency effect of international marketing knowledge and competitive intensity in the home country in influencing technological knowledge capital and internationalization relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs multiple linear regression analysis using a dataset consisting of 326 Bombay Stock Exchange-listed A and B category stocks for a six-year period (2010–2016).

Findings

The study finds that with an increase in technological knowledge capital, the internationalization of Indian firms increases. Furthermore, international marketing knowledge and competitive intensity positively moderate this relationship.

Research limitations/implications

The study finds that with an increase in technological knowledge capital, the internationalization of Indian firms increases. Furthermore, international marketing knowledge and competitive intensity positively moderate this relationship.

Practical implications

The authors’ findings increase international marketing managers' awareness of how internationalization acts as a knowledge management tool for EMFs under the contingency effect of international marketing knowledge and competitive intensity.

Originality/value

The study provides novel insights into the technological knowledge capital management strategy by EMFs through internationalization and the role of international marketing knowledge and competitive intensity in increasing firms' ability to even better manage technological knowledge capital.
