Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to highlight issues related to the management of indigenous and scientific knowledge, and the approach towards transferring these from one community to another, to therefore reduce risk in communities living with multiple hazards and disasters in cyclone, flood, earthquake and drought prone regions of India.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study based approach and secondary research have been used to understand the disaster‐related problems and the mitigation strategy. Lessons are drawn from Indian scenarios such as Orissa super cyclone, Bhuj earthquake, etc.

Findings

The study highlights a few important points for practising managers/officers. Rural telecentres need to evolve for relief and rehabilitation work. Indigenous knowledge is more in tacit form; therefore, a carefully designed strategy would be needed to manage this.

Practical implications

The study focuses on many practical issues related to disaster management in India. These issues are derived from past experiences.

Originality/value

The research provides insight to researchers and practising officers/managers. Newer insights have been presented on tacit‐knowledge management and use of scientific understanding on the management of natural disasters.

Abstract

Questions about the role and composition of the middle class have been examined and debated in the academy and in the political sphere for more than 100 years. In analyses of the Indian middle class specifically, two questions, both addressed by Diane Davis, seem to excite the most attention. The first has to do with the definition of a middle class, a term that has its origins in a very different social formation as well as its potentially mediating function in democracy. The second and more recent question has to do with what is variously called the “new” or “emerging” middle classes – in short, the middle classes of a liberalizing India.

Abstract

This study explores the nature of the spot foreign exchange risk premium. Employing Ross's Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) as a vehicle, it tests the hypothesis that cross‐sectional differences in pure currency returns depend on measures of systematic (covariance) risk. These tests have greater power, in the sense of an enhanced ability to reject the hypothesis, since they explicitly allow for the possibility that idiosyncratic risk is priced. A battery of tests is unable to reject the hypothesis that expected exchange returns can be explained by a single‐factor APT. One implication of these results is that official intervention in exchange markets is unnecessary and undesirable.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to climate change and a considerable increase in man-made disasters, disaster risk management has gained a lot of importance. This article aims to summarize the proceedings of two days of discussion on natural and human-induced disasters organized by National Institute of Disaster Management at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The objective is to evolve a holistic national strategy for inclusion of disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies and programs into the mainstream of developmental activities. The libraries worldwide are witnessing a series of disasters, and DRR is one of the much-discussed topics within the library community. The literature on disaster risk management in libraries is scanty, and with less research being done, needs urgent attention. The library conferences in India and abroad hardly address the theme “DRR”; therefore, this report will be of interest to librarians and policy makers for libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

This report includes selected presentations and discussion during thematic and plenary sessions and provides a review of some of the events of the first session of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR). The author's observation/participation and discussion on vital areas, namely disaster resilience, capacity building, risk insurance, global warming and climate change, created insight in preparation of this report.

Findings

A multi-stakeholder NPDRR has been constituted by the Government of India, with Home Minister as Chairman, in Resolution No. 47-31/2012-DM-III on 26 February 2013. The event was attended by various stakeholders such as policy makers, administrators, professional disaster managers, UN organizations, multilateral organizations, scientists, technocrats, academicians, corporate and private sectors, community leaders, representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (grass roots-level institutions in India preferably called a “village panchayat”), and NGOs. India is amongst 80 countries which have a national platform on disaster risk management like the NPDRR. The theme generated a lot of discussion on risk financing mechanisms, long-term recovery and rehabilitation, and holistic strategy for multi-hazard DRR.

Originality/value

This is an important topic in the area of disaster risk management which includes disaster resilience, capacity development, and policy planning. This discussion forum facilitated the enhancement of knowledge and the integration of DRR into the mainstream of development.

Abstract

A library automation software package (SANJAY) has been developed in the CDS/ISIS V2.3 environment extensively using the Pascal interface to meet the requirements of a model library. Using SANJAY a user can get instant access to information, responses to queries and reports from multiple databases. It is an interactive, menu driven, and user‐friendly package which carries out routine functions of a library. The software is capable of inter‐relating two or more databases for a single application like acquisition or circulation. This paper identifies some of the problems in the CDS/ISIS V2.3 package and presents the features of the SANJAY package that overcome these problems and discusses its implementation in a government library.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the available literature, this paper aims to build a theoretical framework identifying the following five factors influencing electric vehicle (EV) adoption: 1) demographic factors, 2) environmental factors, 3) infrastructural factors, 4) economic factors and 5) fiscal policy factors. The authors then identified the variables representing these factors and built a linear regression model. The authors collected cross-sectional data of the identified variables of Indian states and estimated the regression model using the ordinary least squares method.

Design/methodology/approach

India has witnessed a rapid adoption of EVs in the two-wheelers and three-wheelers segment. The paper aims to identify the factors influencing EV adoption in India.

Findings

The estimated results indicate that EV adoption is significantly increasing in India due to the rising population and increasing number of power charging stations. The authors also found that government policy incentives have no significant impact on EV adoption.

Practical implications

The study’s findings and the recommended changes in India’s current EV policy aim to help policymakers achieve faster adoption of EVs in India.

Originality/value

The authors further conducted a sentiment analysis of the people’s comments on popular YouTube videos and found that most people have negative sentiments towards EV adoption because of battery-related problems and range anxiety.
