Abstract
Purpose
The research paper presents analysis and prioritization of barriers influencing the improvement in the effectiveness of manufacturing system. The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated fuzzy-based multi-criteria decision-making (F-MCDM) framework to assist management of the case company in the selection of most effective manufacturing system. The framework helps in prioritizing the manufacturing systems on the basis of their effectiveness affected by the barriers.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, on the basis of experts’ opinion, five barriers have been identified in a brain-storming session. The problem of prioritization of manufacturing system is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem and hence is solved by using the F-MCDM approach using dominance matrix.
Findings
Manufacturing systems’ effectiveness for Indian industries is influenced by barriers. The prioritization of manufacturing systems depends on qualitative factor decision-making criteria. Among the manufacturing systems, leagile manufacturing system is given the highest priority followed by lean manufacturing system, agile manufacturing system, flexible manufacturing system and cellular manufacturing system.
Research limitations/implications
The selection of an appropriate manufacturing system plays a vital role for sustainable growth of the manufacturing company. In the present work, barriers which influence the effectiveness of manufacturing system have been identified. On the basis of degree of influence of barriers on the effectiveness of the manufacturing system, five alternative manufacturing systems are prioritized. The framework will help the management of the case company to take reasonable decision for the adoption of the appropriate manufacturing system.
Practical implications
The results of the research work are very useful for the manufacturing companies interested in analyzing the alternative manufacturing systems on the basis of their effectiveness and their sensitivity toward various barriers. The management of Indian manufacturing company will take decision to adopt a manufacturing system whose effectiveness is least sensitive toward barriers. Effectiveness of such manufacturing system will improve with time without having retardation due to barriers. With improved effectiveness of the manufacturing system, the manufacturing company would be able to survive with global competition. The result of the present work is based on the inputs from the case company and may vary for the other manufacturing company. In the present work, only five alternative manufacturing systems and five barriers have been considered. To obtain the better result, MCDM approach with more number of alternative manufacturing systems and barriers might be considered.
Originality/value
The research work is based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process framework and on the case study conducted by the authors. The work carried out is original in nature and based on the real-life case study.

Abstract
Purpose
In the present study, wire electro-spark machining of Titanium alloy is performed with the machining parameter such as spark-on time, spark-off time, current and servo voltage. The purpose of this study is to model surface roughness using machine learning approach for input/controllable variable. Machined surface examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and XRD methods.
Design/methodology/approach
Full factorial approach has been used to design the experiments with varying machining parameters into three-level four factors. Obtained surface roughness was modeled using machine learning methods namely Gaussian process regression (GPR) and support vector machine (SVM) methods. These methods were compared for both training and testing data with a coefficient of correlation and root mean square error basis. Machined surface examined using scanned electron microscopy and XRD for surface quality produced and check migration of tool material to workpiece material.
Findings
Machine learning algorithms has excellent scope for prediction quality response for the wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) process, resulting in saving of time and cost as it is difficult to find each time experimentally. It has been found that the proposed model with minimum computational time, provides better solution and avoids priority weightage calculation by decision-makers.
Originality/value
The proposed modeling provides better predication about surface produced while machining of Ti6Al7Nb using zinc-coated brass wire electrode during WEDM operation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the current article is to explore the rotational behavior on nanofluid flow over an exponentially stretching surface. Heat and mass flux are formulated upon Cattaneo–Christov theory.
Design/methodology/approach
Effect of thermophoretic, Brownian motion and thermally convective conditions is further retained. Novel boundary layer approximations are applied to transform the governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy and nanoparticle volume fraction. Convergent series solutions are obtained to manage the rotating flow with the aid of homotopy analysis method (HAM).
Findings
Depending on the several dimensionless parameters including the local rotation parameter the Prandtl number Pr, the thermophoresis parameter, the Brownian motion parameter, the Lewis number Le, Biot number Bi, Deborah number in terms of heat flux relaxation parameter and Deborah number in terms of mass flux relaxation parameter with the dimensionless physical quantities are deliberated through graphs. Present results are also likened with the foregoing results in significance.
Originality/value
No such assumptions have been made for the development of analytical solution so far.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims at examining the effect of total quality management (TQM) practices on the financial performance ISO 9001:2008 certified manufacturing companies in Ethiopia with a mediating role of operational performance.
Design/methodology/approach
A cross-sectional survey research was conducted to meet the purpose. Data used for the study were solely primary data and were collected from the top and middle-level managers of different departments and senior experts working under the production/operation and quality management units of the target organizations. Data were obtained from 302 participants working in 73 companies using a self-administered questionnaire. Structural equation modelling (SEM) technique was applied to test the hypotheses positing the structural link between TQM practices, operational performance and financial performance.
Findings
The findings show that TQM practices had a significant direct and positive effect on both operational performance and financial performance and that operational performance significantly affects financial performance. The bootstrapping output of the mediation analysis also established that operational performance partially mediates the causal link between TQM practices and financial performance.
Research limitations/implications
The empirical evidence provided by the present study provides helpful insights and guidance to managers to make a good deal of investment in maintaining enhanced performance outcomes under the operations stream that eventually would lead to better financial outcome.
Originality/value
Being one of the first attempts to empirically examine the structural linkages among TQM practices, operational performance and financial performance in Ethiopian manufacturing organizations, this paper provides strategic insights on the importance of implementing TQM practices in a holistic manner for the achievement of better performance outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose
In Indian thermal power plants, the main cause of boiler tube failure is the presence of molten sulphates and vanadates, which deteriorate the tube material at high temperatures. To combat the hot corrosion failure of metals, thermal spray technology is adopted. This study aims to investigate and study the effect of hot corrosion behaviour of carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced ZrO2-Y2O3 composite coatings on T-91 boiler tube steel in a molten salt environment at 900 °C for 50 cycles.
Design/methodology/approach
A plasma spray technique was used for development of the coatings. The samples were exposed to hot corrosion in a silicon tube furnace at 900 °C for 50 cycles. After testing, the test coupons were analysed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and cross-sectional analysis techniques to aid understanding the kinetics of the corrosion reaction.
Findings
CNT-based reinforced coatings showed lower weight gain along with the formation of protective oxide scales during the experimentation. Improvement in protection against hot corrosion was observed with increase in CNT content in the coating matrix.
Originality/value
It is pertinent to mention here that the high temperature behaviour of CNT-reinforced ZrO2-Y2O3 composite on T-91 steel at 900°C temperature in molten salt environment has never been studied. Thus, the present research was conducted to provide useful results for the application of CNT-reinforced composite coatings at elevated temperature.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the determinants of organic food buying behaviour in an emerging economy like India, where organic food yet has low market share in spite of its potential. Using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as the underlying basis, it attempts to explain the effect of attitude, subjective norms and the perceived behaviour control (PBC) on buying intention towards organic food among respondents in Delhi-National capital region, India. Additionally, it attempts to discriminate functional and constructive attitudes.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative questionnaire survey approach was used on 306 respondents and multiple linear regression was used to validate the research model.
Findings
Attitudes and PBC have a significant positive impact on the intention to purchase organic food. This paper found subjective norms to be weak and barely significant to intention. The results conclude that health motives, past purchase behaviour, knowledge, affordability and trust in organic certification label are the main facilitators in organic food purchase. Primarily, the respondents see buying organic food regularly as being of value and enjoyable to them. A more favourable appearance vs conventional food was negatively related to behavioural intention.
Originality/value
This research could aid all stakeholders in the organic food sector, particularly emerging economies like India where the organic market is still nascent. It could be an essential driver to improve customer involvement and thus aid them in the decision-making process to choose organic food over conventional food. It also attempts to establish the usability of TPB in assessing functional attitudes based on constructive attitudes for organic food purchase.

Purpose
In the present context of globalization, maintenance of production systems is very important. A lot of organizations are facing many problems in maintenance management. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the main problems in maintenance operations and compare these problems with those in manufacturing operations as found in the literature for effective maintenance.
Design/methodology/approach
To identify the main problems in maintenance operations and to compare them with those in manufacturing operations, a large amount of published literature was studied. The paper systematically categorizes the published literature and then analyzes and reviews it theoretically.
Findings
Lack of top management support, lack of measurement of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), lack of strategic planning and implementation and many more problems are biggest problems in the maintenance operations as well as manufacturing operations. These have emerged as top problems in the implementation of effective maintenance strategies in industries.
Research limitations/implications
From the findings, the authors can conclude that for good maintenance, top management is supposed to be supportive in taking different initiatives. Industrial organizations should focus on improving overall performance of machines identified as OEE rather than only productivity of machines. This paper will be extremely useful for the researchers, maintenance professionals and others concerned with maintenance to understand the significance of maintenance problems in industries.
Originality/value
These findings will be highly useful for professionals from the manufacturing sector in implementing effective maintenance strategy in the maintenance management system.

Abstract
Purpose
Despite the susceptibility of cotton crops to pest attacks in the Malwa Region of Indian Punjab, no crop insurance policy has been implemented there– not even the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), which is a central scheme. Therefore, this paper attempts to gauge the likely impact of the PMFBY on Punjab cotton farmers and assess the changes needed for greater uptake and effectiveness of PMFBY.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors have conducted a primary survey to conduct this study. Initially, the authors compared the costs of cotton production with the returns in two scenarios (with and without insurance). Additionally, the authors have applied a logistic regression framework to examine the determinants of the willingness of farmers to participate in the crop insurance market.
Findings
The study finds that net returns of cotton crops are conventionally small and insufficient to cope with damages from crop failure. Yet, PMFBY will require some modifications in the premium rate and the level of indemnity for its greater uptake among Punjab cotton farmers. Additionally, using the logistic regression framework, the authors find that an increase in awareness about crop insurance and farmers' perceptions about their crop failure in the near future reduces the willingness of the farmers to participate in the crop insurance markets.
Research limitations/implications
The present study looks for the viability of PMFBY in Indian Punjab for the cotton crop, which can also be extended to other crops.
Social implications
Punjab could also use crop insurance to encourage diversification in agriculture. There is a need for special packages for diversified crops under any crop insurance policy. Crops susceptible to volatility due to climate-related factors should be identified and provided with a special insurance package.
Originality/value
There exist very scant studies that have discussed the viability of a central crop insurance scheme in the agricultural-rich state of India, i.e. Punjab. Moreover, they do not also focus on crop losses accruing due to pest and insect attacks.

Purpose
This study aims to propose and test a conceptual model that represents customer perceived ethicality (CPE) and customer perceived website service quality (CPWSQ), in which both are combined to investigate the underlying mechanism by which hotel website quality (HWQ) influences customer loyalty (CL).
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses quantitative and partial least square structural equation modeling to analyze the data collected from 457 hotel guests.
Findings
The findings confirm that HWQ is positively associated with CL, CPE and CPWSQ. Moreover, CPE and CPWSQ mediates the relationship between CPE-CL and CPWSQ-CL. This study also validated that CPE and CPWSQ are positively associated with CL.
Originality/value
This study contributes to ethical and consumer behavioral literature by demonstrating the influence of HWQ on CL, CPE and CPWSQ. Furthermore, it uncovers the mechanisms through which HWQ affects CL, using signaling theory and stakeholder theory, which prior studies ignored.
