Abstract
Purpose
This study conducts an analysis of the interplay between governance quality, environmental expenditure of the government, and pollution emissions (measured as CO2 emissions) within the BRIC economies.
Design/methodology/approach
Utilizing the FMOLS model and marginal effects, we investigate the influence of governance quality and environmental expenditure on environmental quality (CO2 emissions) over the period 1996–2020. We took data for Brazil, Russia, India and China. We excluded South Africa due to its due to its small economic size relative to other BRIC economies, sluggish industrial growth and deteriorating foreign trade which gives contrast outliers to our data.
Findings
Results indicate that government investments in environmental protection contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions. However, the effectiveness of these expenditures is contingent upon the quality of governance. This underscores the significance of robust governance for realizing meaningful reductions in air pollution through environmental spending. Further, increase in GDP per capita and the industrial sector's share of GDP are associated with a significant rise in CO2 emissions across BRIC economies. Conversely, FDI and trade openness exhibit a negative impact on CO2 emissions, with this effect gaining greater resilience when accounting for governance factors.
Research limitations/implications
Like any other studies, the present study also suffers from some limitations. First, besides air quality, environmental quality encompasses multiple dimensions and various characteristics such as water purity, noise pollution, open space access, visual effects of buildings etc. But the present study included only CO2 (air quality) as a proxy of environmental quality due to various problems of data and methods. Second, CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission, which is the dependent variable in our model, is actually influenced by various quantitative and qualitative (both natural and man-made) factors. We included only nine independent variables. However, we could not include many variables due to lack of consistent data. Third, this study included only four countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) and excluded South Africa which is a member of the BRICS block due to its economic size, sluggish industrial growth and deteriorating foreign trade which gives contrast outliers to our data set of the four BRIC countries. Therefore, the future research may be carried out by addressing those issues for better understanding of the environmental problems, governance and policies thereon.
Practical implications
(i) Establish environmental governance committees – The four BRIC countries including South Africa should form a committee comprising government, civil society, and private sector representatives for comprehensive oversight and collaboration in environmental governance. (ii) Invest in capacity building for environmental institutions – Allocate resources to enhance environmental institutions' capacity through training, data improvement, and enforcement strengthening. (iii) Implement green procurement policies – Encourage green procurement in government agencies to drive demand for eco-friendly products and services, promoting sustainable practices. (iv) Incentivize green technology development – Offer tax credits or subsidies to stimulate green technology adoption, including renewable energy and sustainable agriculture. (v) Promote sustainable urban development – Prioritize sustainable urban strategies like public transportation investment and green space promotion to mitigate urbanizations' environmental impacts. (vi) Enhance cross-border cooperation – Foster collaboration on transboundary environmental issues among four BRIC nations including South Africa, including joint research and policy responses. (vii) Promote green finance and investment – Mobilize green finance to support sustainable development projects through instruments like green investment funds and bonds.
Originality/value
This study distinguishes itself by offering a unique analysis of both individual and combined effects of governance and environmental expenditure on environmental quality. Additionally, it encompasses various dimensions of governance, an aspect rarely explored in the BRIC countries.

Abstract
Purpose
The study aims to explore the extent to which human resources development quantifies the economic growth of BRICS countries under the globalization era by controlling country differences.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and Scheffe pairwise comparison tests to quantify the impact of the variables and the level of difference among the BRICS countries onto human Resources development.
Findings
The study observes that the impact of human resources development on economic growth of BRICS counties is significant but limited to few countries. The study reveals that countries such as India and South Africa are unable to utilize their human resources efficiently to promote economic growth, as compared with Russia, China and Brazil. The study further argues that there is urgent need of amalgam of various economic development theories keeping in mind the regional needs to extract the positive impact from human resource on economic development.
Research limitations/implications
The single limitation of this research is that it was not possible to compare the results with other developing countries to unleash the capabilities of human resources development with regard to economic growth at the universal level.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first of its kind to analyze human resources development at a much deeper level. The paper has chosen variables which are important from the policy perspective of government rather than the working perspective, which is a great contribution. Further, for human index the variables chose covering major aspects of human development from spending perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this bibliometric study is to report research output and publications on the social determinants of health and health outcomes. This study condenses numerous studies into a single paper, which not only provides insights into the worldwide growth and advancement of the study field but also establishes a research agenda for the future.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the Scopus database, a thorough bibliometric study of the worldwide scientific output on social determinants of health from 2000 to 2021 was conducted. With the assistance of VOS viewer and R-based scientometric software, the worldwide development of research on social determinants of health was analysed through performance analysis and network map visualisation.
Findings
This study identified the most influential authors, studies, journals and affiliations in the field of social determinants of health, as well as the most co-cited authors and journals, based on a bibliometric analysis of 1,203 research papers retrieved from the Scopus database during the past two decades (2000–2021). Beginning in 2000 with one publication and ending in 2021, 274 articles were viewed online, relevant to the social determinants of health. From 2014 to 2021, publications continue to grow at an accelerating pace.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to review the social determinants of health and its outcomes. The findings of the chosen studies represent a novel and important addition to the study of social determinants of health. It offers a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications, in addition to the identification of vital research trends.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore how job performance (EJP) is affected by employees’ perception of organizational politics (POP). It also investigates the mediating roles of workplace stress (WS) and counterproductive work behavior (CWB).
Design/methodology/approach
Data was gathered from employees working in category (A) travel agencies and five-star hotels in Egypt. A partial least squares structural equation modeling analysis was conducted using 468 valid responses.
Findings
The findings indicate that there is a negative correlation between POP and EJP. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between POP and CWB as well as WS. The results also demonstrate a negative correlation between WS and CWB with EJP. Moreover, the findings suggest that CWB and WS act as partial mediators in the relationship between POP and EJP.
Originality/value
The research included some ground-breaking investigations. Currently, research on the effects of POP on CWB, WS and EJP is insufficient. As well, the current study attempts to measure the mediating role of CWB and WS in the link between POP and EJP. The current study has filled a gap in the tourism and hospitality literature, human resources management literature and organizational behavior literature by empirically analyzing these links in the context of Egyptian hotels and travel agencies.

Objetivo
Este estudio pretende explorar cómo el desempeño laboral (EJP) se ve afectado por la percepción que tienen los empleados de la política organizativa (POP). También investiga los papeles mediadores del estrés laboral (WS) y el comportamiento laboral contraproducente (CWB).
Diseño/metodología/enfoque
Se recopilaron datos de empleados que trabajaban en agencias de viajes de categoría (A) y hoteles de cinco estrellas en Egipto. Se realizó un análisis de Modelización de Ecuaciones Estructurales por Mínimos Cuadrados Parciales (PLS-SEM) utilizando 468 respuestas válidas.
Resultados
Los resultados indican que existe una correlación negativa entre POP y EJP. Además, existe una correlación positiva entre POP y CWB, así como WS. Los resultados también demuestran una correlación negativa entre WS y CWB con EJP. Además, los resultados sugieren que CWB y WS actúan como mediadores parciales en la relación entre POP y EJP.
Originalidad/valor
La investigación incluye algunas investigaciones pioneras. En la actualidad, la investigación sobre los efectos de la POP en la CWB, la WS y la EJP es insuficiente. Además, el presente estudio intenta medir el papel mediador de la CWB y la WS en el vínculo entre la POP y la EJP. El presente estudio ha llenado un vacío en la literatura sobre turismo y hotelería, en la literatura sobre gestión de recursos humanos y en la literatura sobre comportamiento organizativo al analizar empíricamente estos vínculos en el contexto de los hoteles y agencias de viajes egipcios.

Purpose
This study aimed to investigate the impact of leader STARA competence (LSC) – managing and implementing smart technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics and algorithms– on green competitiveness (GC) in the tourism and hospitality sectors. It also investigated the role of employee green creativity (EGC) as a mediator between LSC and GC and the mediating role of green human capital (GHC) in the relationship between EGC and GC.
Design/methodology/approach
The study utilized PLS-SEM to analyze 320 responses obtained from middle-level management at five-star hotels and travel agencies in Egypt, using WarpPLS statistical software 7.0.
Findings
Leader STARA competence positively affects employee green creativity and green competitiveness. Employee green creativity positively affects green competitiveness and green human capital. Green human capital positively affects green competitiveness. In addition, the study demonstrated significant mediation roles of green human capital in the employee green creativity and green competitiveness relationship and employee green creativity in the leader STARA competence and green competitiveness relationship.
Practical implications
The study offers several practical implications for tourism and hospitality enterprises. It underscores the significance of leader STARA’s competence in advancing green competitiveness.
Originality/value
The study provides new insights into how emerging concepts like leader STARA competence, green human capital and employee green creativity simultaneously predict green competitiveness within tourism and hospitality enterprises. It also contributes significantly to enriching the social exchange theory.

The aim of this study is to examine the factors that lead to success or failure of a small business in the West Bank of Palestine.
Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study is to examine the factors that lead to success or failure of a small business in the West Bank of Palestine.
Design/methodology/approach
This study methodology is a survey research, testing the Lussier model of business success and failure with a sample of 246 small businesses (90 failed and 156 successful) to better understand the reasons of their success or failure using logistic regression statistical analysis.
Findings
The model is significant (p = 0.000); it will predict a group of businesses as successful or failed more accurately than random guessing 99 per cent of the time. The model will also predict a specific small firm as successful or failed 94 per cent of the time vs. 50 per cent for random guessing. The r-square is very high (r = 0.70), indicating that the model variables are, in fact, significant predictors of success or failure. Results indicate that having adequate capital, keeping good records with financial controls, making plans and getting professional advice on how to manage the firm are the most important factors for the viability and success of small businesses.
Practical implications
With the high rate of small business failure globally, results of this study provide a list of variables that contribute to the success of small firms. Firms that focus on these important factors will increase their odds of success. Thus, avoiding failure, firms better utilize resources that contribute to economic growth.
Originality/value
This is the first study that looks at success and failure of small businesses in Palestine. There is no one single accepted theory that may be applied to small businesses. This paper aims to further contribute to the global validity of Lussier success and failure model moving toward a theory to better understand why some businesses succeed and others fail.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present an up-to-date survey on the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique with co-operative strategy, a fast-evolving fifth-generation (5 G) technology. NOMA is used for serving many mobile users, both in power and code domains. This paper considers the power-domain NOMA, which is now discussed as NOMA.
Design/methodology/approach
The first part of the paper discusses NOMA-based cooperative relay systems using different relay strategies over different channel models. In various research works, the analytical expressions of many performance metrics were derived, measured and simulated for better performance of the NOMA systems. In the second part, a brief introduction to diversity techniques is discussed. The multiple input and multiple output system merged with cooperative NOMA technology, and its future challenges were also presented in this part. In the third part, the paper surveys some new conceptions such as cognitive radio, index modulation multiple access, space-shift keying and reconfigurable intelligent surface that can be combined with NOMA systems for better performance.
Findings
The paper presents a brief survey of diverse research projects being carried out in the field of NOMA. The paper also surveyed two different relaying strategies that were implemented in cooperative NOMA over different channels and compared several performance parameters that were evaluated and derived in these implementations.
Originality/value
The paper provides a scope for recognizable future work and presents a brief idea of the new techniques that can be united with NOMA for better performance in wireless systems.

Abstract
Purpose
Organizations have increasingly been compelled to engage in ecological businesses in recent decades, necessitating identifying environmental practices contributing to enhanced sustainability. One of the main reasons for doing this research is to see how far down the path to green transformational leadership (GTFL) in Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices in the healthcare industry in Pakistan. Additionally, this research aims to analyze how this change affects the long-term success of businesses in sustainable performance (SP).
Design/methodology/approach
To identify factors related to the study variables, the research utilized master journals, as well as the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The ISM-DEMATEL (Interpretive Structural Modeling - Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) technique was employed to establish a hierarchical model. This model facilitated the identification of cause-and-effect relationships among factors, which were further elucidated using the DEMATEL interrelationship diagram.
Findings
The analysis of the results indicates that Green Training (F4), Green Job Analysis (F1), Intellectual Stimulation (F10), and Green Product Innovation (F9) are the primary factors that have a significant impact on achieving Environmental Policies and Regulations (F13), and Subjective Environment Norms (F14) of SP factors.
Research limitations/implications
The study is implemented in the healthcare industry of Pakistan, with a focus on practical and managerial aspects. It encourages managers to develop and adapt their human resources policies and environmental strategies. Implementing safety health standards is crucial to mitigate the detrimental effects on the environment. The research was carried out during the period of the pandemic. The scope of this study was restricted to the healthcare industry in Pakistan.
Originality/value
In order to improve SP, this study presents a unique strategy combining sustainability into decision-making procedures with the function of GTFL in GHRM. Implementing safety health standards is crucial to mitigate the detrimental effects on the environment.
