Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to integrate mobile supply and demand on an economic basis and to model the economic value of additional data capacity, spectrum demand and data growth under a range of parameter and policy assumptions.

Design/methodology/approach

The modelling requires an iterative solution to find an equilibrium between supply and demand, which allows data demand to be bootstrapped, i.e. determined endogenously within the model.

Findings

The sensitivity of the model to input parameter changes differs from a modelling approach where data demand is assumed to be exogenous, whilst in some instances, the sign of the relationship is reversed, e.g. the response of economic value to mobile site cost changes.

Research limitations/implications

The approach suggests a research agenda to estimate willingness to pay for data and the price elasticity of data demand, and may also suggest new explanatory variables to test econometrically in relation to spectrum value.

Practical implications

The approach provides a different route to spectrum valuation and allows estimation of the economic impacts of a range of policy questions.

Originality/value

This paper provides the integration of supply and demand and endogenous estimation of data demand and economic value, coupled with quantitative assessment of a range of policy questions.

Abstract

Studies the treatment of wood‐processing waste using different impregnants as a tool for improving its water‐resistance properties, in order to achieve a reduction in the damage to building elements prepared from the treated wood waste when exposed to weather of relatively high moisture content. Applies different variables such as type of impregnant (synthetic resins or oils), concentration of impregnant, time of impregnation and thermal treatment. Obtains results which show that, generally, using a different concentration of synthetic resins (UF and novolac), or dry oils (motor oil and linseed oil) improved the water‐resistance property of wood waste, and that thermal treatment increases the improvement percentage as a result of impregnation. Also indicates that the optimum improvement in water resistance is attained when using 50 per cent linseed oil as the impregnant for an impregnation time of ten minutes, followed by hardening for three hours at 120°C.

Abstract

Given the in creasing globalisation of economies, a growing number of marketing firms are expecting more of their profits to be derived from international sales. However, failure to account for or understand the effects of differences in consumers' cultural values on decision‐making will hinder a marketer's efforts to expand internationally. Using samples of Middle‐eastern and US consumers, the study found cultural values and consumer ethical beliefs to be significantly different between the two groups. In addition, these cultural values explained a significant part of the variation in consumer ethical beliefs in both cultures.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to demonstrate the methods of information gathering and retrieval used in the BALTIC Library and Archive.

Design/methodology/approach

All methods described are based on current practices and future plans in the Library and Archive.

Findings

The article finds that organisations or individuals that do not form a part of a larger network of institutions can use this independence to their advantage.

Originality/value

This article will highlight some of the ways that small teams or even individuals can develop new digital skills to expand the scope of their archives.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus the research on the identification of stakeholders through an analysis of an empirical study by a consulting firm in Brazil. In this case study, the company needs to identify the stakeholders that can exert some influence in its sphere of activity.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper considers the question: to do sustainable business, companies must have good knowledge of all actors with influence in their sphere of activity. This identification of stakeholders is the first step. Based on stakeholder theory, the authors discuss the importance of management with stakeholders in the pursuit of sustainability in business. To achieve this objective, the consultant hired has used fuzzy logic algorithm, applying the theory of clans.

Findings

In applying the model through an empirical study, it has been possible to provide a tool based on the use of grouping algorithm that can facilitate decision making by obtaining qualitative data from a dialogue with managers or specialists on a particular topic. The model also serves to establish the level of relationship between different stakeholders and obtain affinities.

Originality/value

The paper provides an innovative and a useful tool to be used in the process of identifying stakeholders. The paper's main contribution is the application of algorithms in the identification of stakeholders considering sustainability criteria in enterprises, and providing a useful model in making decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of women in the field of photography after the second wave of feminism in Europe.

Design/methodology/approach

The grounded theory on the position of women in contemporary photography has been contrasted with the information collected by the authors in previous research studies on the presence of women photographers in the main museum collections in Europe.

Findings

Gender inequality in the various artistic disciplines is a current sociopolitical problem Western countries have been fighting against for several decades. After the resurgence of social movements in the USA and Europe in the 1960s, an artistic movement called feminist art emerged whose significance should be assessed.

Research limitations/implications

The paper proposed a general approximation, a foundation on the state of art, which may be implemented in the future with more data coming from other collections. It should be taken into account that this aim is a work in progress in a large scale of the research.

Practical implications

This paper includes implications for the development of a more efficient strategy to create a balance situation in the number of men and women photographers at the museum collections.

Originality/value

The paper identified a lack of practical analysis on the current averages of female photographers in art institutions.
