Abstract
Purpose
This paper describes the personal history and intellectual development of Morris B. Holbrook (MBH), a participant in the field of marketing academics in general and consumer research in particular.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper pursues an approach characterized by historical autoethnographic subjective personal introspection or HASPI.
Findings
The paper reports the personal history of MBH and – via HASPI – interprets various aspects of key participants and major themes that emerged over the course of his career.
Research limitations/implications
The main implication is that every scholar in the field of marketing pursues a different light, follows a unique path, plays by idiosyncratic rules, and deserves individual attention, consideration, and respect … like a cat that carries its own leash.
Originality/value
In the case of MBH, like (say) a jazz musician, whatever value he might have depends on his originality.

Abstract
Rather than focusing on issues that pertain to the consumption of cats (as pets), deals with the nature of consumption by cats (as consumers). Explores these facets of consumer behaviour by means of three interrelated methods: ethography, felologies, and unobtrusive participation. This approach addresses the differences between human and feline consumption in general. A more detailed treatment then uses photographs to examine the consumption experiences of one cat in particular by documenting a day in the life of a cat.

Abstract
In the print world, sales and rights transactions tend to be considered separately; in the digital world, all transactions are rights transactions. People want to do business differently, linking between content items, and sometimes acquiring very small fragments; e‐commerce is essential to make such transactions efficient. E‐commerce requires unambiguous identification of three things ‐ the user, the object, and the use ‐ in order to select the appropriate terms and conditions for the transaction. Additional elements required in any e‐commerce agreement are the parameters limiting the use, and the consideration to be given in exchange for the right. International groups are working on these issues and readers' involvement is invited.

Abstract
Many publishers have traditionally depended on journals. The explosion in information is making it impossible for library funding to keep up; this is exacerbated as falling circulations and rising editorial costs cause further price increases. Emphasizes that publishers have to consider solutions if they are to remain in business. Individual article supply is one option; publishers would prefer to supply the articles themselves, but need central databases from which users can select. Electronic media speed up the process, improve the usability of articles, and make possible inclusion of new types of information. Workable charging systems will soon be available; security issues are also being addressed. Concludes that the journal entity still has a value in gathering together related articles and making them navigable.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to bring together information on whether any evidence exists of a commercial conflict between the creation of digital archives at research institutions and by key subject centres of excellence, and the business of journal publishing.
Design/methodology/approach
Relevant publications, including articles published in refereed books and journals, as well as informal commentaries on listservs, blogs and wikis, were analysed to determine whether there is any evidence of a commercial relationship.
Findings
Most of the published comments are highly subjective and anecdotal – there is a significant emotional overtone to many of the views expressed. There is precious little hard evidence currently available to support or debunk the idea that a commercial conflict exists between repositories and journal subscriptions. The situation is made more difficult by the many technological, sociological and administrative changes that are taking place in parallel to the establishment of repositories.
Practical implications
Separating the key drivers and their impact is a major strategic challenge facing all stakeholders in the scholarly communication industry in future.
Research limitations/implications
This is an important area which requires close monitoring – the possible threat that the established journal publishing system could be eroded away by a new “free” scholarly information system needs attention. One significant study in this area is being undertaken by the PEER group, funded by the European Commission with hard evidence being collected by UCL's CIBER research group. The results from this impartial investigation will be very welcome.
Originality/value
The paper shows that relationship between repositories and journal subscriptions is vague.

Abstract
Grammar and syntax combine with vocabulary to allow human beings to communicate. Metadata and protocols combine with data to allow computer systems to exchange data usefully. Humans may communicate via internet email with the feeling that they are dealing only with another person. Yet they rely on hidden conventions and agreements regarding the structure of messages, the content of some parts of the message, and the way that message are transmitted and forwarded from one computer to the next. Some email users have realised that consistent use of the subject heading of a message can make it easier for recipients to handle their mail, for example by including labels that tie the message to a particular project, or a previous message.

Abstract
Presents a summary of the latest in the series of international conferences on interlending and document supply. Whilst co‐operation between researchers, publishers and librarians was the main theme of the Conference, other topics discussed included union catalogues, standards, digitisation and national systems.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the most recent literature concerning document supply and related matters.
Design/methodology/approach
The approach is based on the reading of over 150 journals as well as monographs, reports and web sites.
Findings
It was found that the fundamental debate on the direction of scholarly publishing continues intensely. Electronic books remain a minority market but the literature at least remains optimistic. The mass digitisation of books continues apace. Open access continues to grow but with continuing and widely differing views on its impact.
Originality/value
The paper represents a useful source of information for librarians and others interested in document supply and related matters.
