Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimization of the scheduling of production and transportation systems while considering delay time (DT) and environmental pollution (EP) concurrently. To this, an integrated multi-site manufacturing process using a cumulative transportation system is investigated. Additionally, a novel multi-society genetic algorithm is developed to reach the best answers.

Design/methodology/approach

A bi-objective model is proposed to optimize the production and transportation process with the objectives of minimizing DT and EP. This is solved by a social dynamic genetic algorithm (SDGA), which is a novel multi-society genetic algorithm, in scenarios of equal and unequal impacts of each objective. The impacts of each objective are calculated by the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) using experts’ opinions. Results are compared by dynamic genetic algorithm and optimum solution results.

Findings

Results clearly depict the efficiency of the proposed algorithm and model in the scheduling of production and transportation systems with the objectives of minimizing DT and EP concurrently. Although SDGA’s performance is acceptable in all cases, in comparison to other genetic algorithms, it needs more process time which is the cost of reaching better answers. Additionally, SDGA had better performance in variable weights of objectives in comparison to itself and other genetic algorithms.

Research limitations/implications

This research is an improvement which allows both society and industry to elevate the levels of their satisfaction while their social responsibilities have been glorified through assuaging the concerns of customers on distribution networks’ emission, competing more efficient and effective in the global market and having the ability to make deliberate decisions far from bias. Additionally, implications of the developed genetic algorithm help directly to the organizations engaged with intelligent production and/or transportation planning which society will be merited indirectly from their outcomes. It also could be utilitarian for organizations that are engaged with small, medium and big data analysis in their processes and want to use more effective and more efficient tools.

Originality/value

Optimization of EP and DT are considered simultaneously in both model and algorithm in this study. Besides, a novel genetic algorithm, SDGA, is proposed. In this multi-society algorithm, each society is focused on a particular objective; however, in one society all the feasible answers will have been integrated and optimization will have been continued.

Abstract

Understanding and predicting the emergence of venture initiation entails research to explore the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention (EI) and behavior. This book chapter aims to provide an overview on the role of exogenous factors (entrepreneurship education), contextual and environmental factors (perceived entrepreneurial motivators and barriers) in developing EIs and behavior among the university graduates. It also highlights the different strands of opinion and research on the role that formal entrepreneurship programs may (or may not) play in developing EI and action. This book chapter further provides some developments on the factors mentioned above among the different Asian countries while using Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Since 1999 GEM reports have been a key source of comparable data across a large variety of countries on attitudes toward entrepreneurship, start-up, established business activities, and aspirations of entrepreneurs for their businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of the work is to demonstrate the eligibility of the methods applied and to have the more reliable and user friendly approaches to find the solution of the applicable governing equations such as of the MHD flow.

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical and semi analytical methods have been applied to solve the governing equations. The reliability of the methods is also approved by a comparison made between the results obtained and the results of the former studies performed using the other numerical approach.

Findings

The reliability of the methods are approved, so that the method could be used to discuss more in depth arguments on the different profiles of the solution.

Originality/value

It could be considered as a first endeavor to use the solution of the MHD Jeffery Hamel flow using this kind of numerical method along with the semi analytical approach.

Need of the Study: In an ever-changing environment, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the business is inevitable. By introducing various advanced technologies to improve productivity, technology users are well aware of the challenges ahead.

Purpose: This chapter aims to understand AI technology and the challenges it faces in noted domains.

Methodology: This chapter is based on secondary research, and relevant information has been gathered from various secondary sources such as research articles, newspaper articles, books, and websites. There is a considerable gap between the expected outcomes of AI and the reality of AI in human resource (HR) practice.

Findings: The study’s outcome focuses on AI challenges in human resource management (HRM) functions such as recruitment and selection, learning and development, and performance appraisal. Considering the numerous benefits, it becomes essential to understand these issues/challenges so that they can be adequately addressed.

Practical Implications: This study highlights the issues such as complexity of HR practices, organisation readiness, staff acceptability, and responsibility for AI implementation in HRM, and other related issues and proposes prudent response to these challenges that will be embraced by both employees and employers, thereby adding novelty to this research.

Abstract

Purpose

High surface area-to-volume ratios make nanoparticles ideal for cancer heat therapy and targeted medication delivery. Moreover, ternary nanofluids (TNFs) may possess superior thermophysical properties compared to mono- and hybrid nanofluids due to their synergistic effects. In light of this information, the objective of this article is to examine the blood-based TNF flow within convergent/divergent channels under velocity slip and temperature jump.

Design/methodology/approach

Leading partial differential equations corresponding to the problem are transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by using similarity variables. The bvp4c code that uses the finite difference method is used to obtain a numerical solution.

Findings

The effect of nanoparticles may change depending on the characteristics of flow near the wall. The properties and proportions of the used nanoparticles become important to control the flow. When TNF was used, an increase in the Nusselt number between 4.75% and 6.10% was observed at low Reynolds numbers. At high Reynolds numbers, nanoparticles reduce the Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient values under some special flow conditions. Importantly, the effects of second-order slip on engineering parameters were also investigated. Furthermore, the Nusselt number increases with increasing shape factor.

Research limitations/implications

Obtained results of the study can be beneficial in both nature and engineering, especially blood flow in veins.

Originality/value

The main innovations of this study are the usage of blood-based TNF and the examination of the effect of shape factor in convergent/divergent channels with second-order velocity slip.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this article is to examine the relationship among the manager's Strategic Intelligence (SI) with Organization Development (OD), and Entrepreneurial Behaviour (EB) in governmental agencies in underdeveloped countries.

Design/methodology/approach

To fulfill the purpose of this study, 274 staff were selected from a population of 480 based on stratified sampling. Descriptive and inferential statistics (including the measurement methods, KMO, Bartlett, Durbin–Watson, and path analysis tests) were performed by using SPSS22 software and Lisrel 8.5.

Findings

Based on the results of the analysis, there is a positive significant relationship between the manager's SI and organizational development. Moreover, there is a positive significant relationship between the manager's SI and entrepreneurial behavior. However, examining the moderator variables including demographic characteristics revealed that the demographic characteristics have no effect on the manager's SI–OD relationship and manager's SI–EB relationship. Only gender influences the manager's SI–EB relationship.

Practical implications

This research proposes a model of the relevant internal variables that have a positive effect on the organization's development and growth. The model is intended to help organizations gain competitive advantage and opportunity by improving the internal factors (managers' SI and entrepreneurial behavior of managers and staff) for the development and survival.

Originality/value

This study proposed a model of manager's SU, OD and Entrepreneurial Behavior in organizations based on data collected from underdeveloped countries. Also, the result of this study could be used by startup and entrepreneurial companies around the world.

Abstract

Purpose

The current environment is unhelpful to female entrepreneurs, and they need to overcome numerous barriers when starting their own businesses. In this study, the researchers investigated the significant barriers that Pakistani female entrepreneurs require to overcome in this respect.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the researchers used a quantitative study and they used a questionnaire to survey the respondents and collect cross-sectional data. The researchers targeted female students who were undertaking bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in different Pakistani public and private sector universities. Accordingly, the researchers based this study’s findings on the usable samples received from 498 Pakistani female students.

Findings

The researchers used a structural equation model (SEM) in this study and its findings highlight that aversion to risk (ATR) has an insignificant impact on entrepreneurial inclinations (EI). In addition, fear of failure (FoF), lack of resources (LoR), aversion to hard work and stress (ASH) and the lack of social networking (LSN) have negative and insignificant effects on EI. The ATR factor has an insignificant effect on entrepreneurial success (ES), whereas FoF, LoR, ASH and LSN are negative and insignificant predictors of Pakistani female students’ ES.

Practical implications

This study’s findings may help Pakistani women to overcome the barriers to ES. In this respect, the researchers recommend that the Pakistan Government and policymakers develop significant strategies to provide the conducive business environment and to financially support Pakistani women to start their own businesses. Furthermore, this study’s findings contribute greatly to the vast amount of current literature and help to overcome the entrepreneurial conditions and barriers that potential entrepreneurs from advanced and developing countries experience frequently.

Originality/value

This study’s findings provide empirical evidence of EI and ES in Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the characteristics and visual patterns of successful knowledge workers using quantitative methods, particularly eye-tracking technology. By conducting a systematic review and matching identified factors with theoretical literature, the research aims to uncover key attributes that contribute to the effectiveness of knowledge workers. These insights are intended to improve employee selection processes, ensuring the right candidates are chosen based on their cognitive, behavioral and visual traits.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-methods approach is employed in this study, consisting of three phases: (1) a systematic literature review identifies key characteristics of successful knowledge workers, (2) these factors are aligned with theoretical frameworks and expert insights to assess their applicability and (3) empirical data is collected through questionnaires and eye-tracking assessments involving ten high-performing site design employees and ten students from Shahid Beheshti University. SPSS software and Tobii Pro Lab tools are used for data analysis to establish correlations between eye movement patterns and attributes of effective knowledge workers.

Findings

The findings reveal that students whose eye movement patterns resemble those of high-performing knowledge workers also share similar cognitive and behavioral characteristics. Identified key attributes include enhanced problem-solving skills, adaptability and effective communication. The study further highlights the potential of eye-tracking technology as a valuable tool in employee selection, offering insights into visual behaviors that correlate with high performance in knowledge work. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the critical traits that optimize organizational performance.

Originality/value

This study presents a novel approach by integrating eye-tracking technology into the knowledge worker selection process. It provides empirical evidence of the visual and cognitive patterns associated with high performance, thereby enhancing the theoretical understanding of knowledge worker selection. The study contributes valuable insights for organizations aiming to refine their hiring practices, emphasizing the importance of both cognitive skills and visual behaviors in candidate assessment. This research lays the groundwork for future studies exploring the intersection of technology and human resource management to optimize workforce effectiveness.
