Abstract
The paper gives design guidelines for polymer thick‐film technology (PTF). After an introduction reviewing the main PTF properties, materials and processes, detailed PTF design rules are presented. They are conservative, to achieve high production yield. The design rules are based on the considerable experience in the companies of the authors and of the persons mentioned in the acknowledgements, as well as on information from the open literature and from materials suppliers. The design guidelines are intended primarily for designers, but they are also important for production personnel, to facilitate a close coupling between design and production, and thus provide optimum use of PTF and obtain high production yield.

Abstract
This paper gives a popular introduction to thin film and some reasons for using this technology. The miniaturisation techniques at Brel & Kjaer are described and the background for the work with thin film techniques is given. The company's method of realising thin film circuits is described by going through the resistor materials, resistor design and photolithography and etching steps. The kind of equipment needed and what B & K use to make prototypes and small scale production are shown. TCR‐values and the resistor stability after 10,000 hours at different environmental exposures are given. Examples of applications with single layer and double layer structures are shown. A thick film circuit is transformed to thin film, and the size reduction can be seen. Finally, for this circuit, the cost calculations are stated for both versions.

Abstract
In September 1995, Mincronsult and ISHM‐Nordic made an extensive microelectronics survey in the four Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, with input from more than 60 companies, research institutes and universities. The information gathered in this survey together with information from a Central and Eastern European survey at the beginning of 1995 (and updated at the end of 1995) is summarised in this report.

Abstract
A recent meeting involved co‐operation with the organisers of the Canadian High Technology Show and the local Chapter of the SMTA. The programme included an inspiring keynote address by Mr Frank J. Pipp, Xerox Corporation. The topic of the address was ‘Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Control and the Evaluation of Total Quality Control in Xerox Corporation.’
As announced in the May issue of Hybrid Circuits, ISHM‐Benelux is organising a one‐day conference on applications of hybrid circuit technology.
