Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a framework for integrating Lean Six Sigma DMAIC methodology and belt based training infrastructure with ISO 9001:2008 standard based Quality Management System.
Design/methodology/approach
A new model called L6QMS 2008 has been developed from the process based quality management system model of ISO 9001:2008 standard based Quality Management System. This model integrates the Lean Six Sigma requirements as appended additional sub‐clauses in the ISO 9001:2008 standard.
Findings
L6QMS 2008 aids an organization in implementing a Lean Six Sigma programme with minimum effort and expenditure.
Practical implications
Results of case studies illustrating the implementation of this integrated approach are presented in this research paper.
Originality/value
This paper presents a unique approach of integrating the three main management models, namely Lean, Six Sigma and ISO 9001:2008 standard based Quality Management System, as a single framework benefiting contemporary organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize the integration of total productive maintenance (TPM) and ISO 9001 certification by contributing a model named as TPM 9001:2008.
Design/methodology/approach
In the beginning of the paper, the origin, growth and capabilities of TPM and ISO 9001 certification in enabling the organizations to perform at world class level are appraised by citing research outcomes reported in literature arena. The information and knowledge thus gathered from literature arena are used to conceptualize TPM 9001:2008 model. Through this conceptualization, the eight TPM pillars are fitted into the five major clauses of ISO 9001:2008 standard. In order to illustrate this conceptualization, the contents of a sub-clause of TPM 9001:2008 model are presented and the rationale behind designating it is appraised.
Findings
TPM 9001:2008 model brings out synergy from the two renowned world class strategies namely “TPM” and “ISO 9001 certification”.
Practical implications
The paper points out that the practical validity of TPM 9001:2008 model shall be established by conducting real time case studies in various organizations.
Originality/value
This paper presents a unique approach for integrating TPM elements with ISO 9001:2008 standard based quality management system, as a single framework benefiting the contemporary organizations.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine and introduce comprehensive insights into the field of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) by reviewing the existing literature and identifying the research gap. The state of LSS research is assessed by critically examining the field, along with a number of dimensions, including time horizon, year, journal and publisher, university, country, author, geographic analysis, research design, research affairs, research methods, tools/techniques used, focus industries, major research area, benefits gained by LSS, critical success factors and barriers of LSS implementation.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is based on a systematic literature review of 190 articles containing the word LSS in their title, which are published in a well-known database, such as Elsevier ScienceDirect, Taylor and Francis, Emerald Full Text, Springer Link, Wiley InterScience and Inderscience from January 2000 to September 2016.
Findings
This analysis reveals 15 significant dimensions to identify the state of LSS research. Authors find a noticeable rise in the attention of LSS research in the available literature. Major findings show that, the empirical research holds greater credibility. Statistics prove that the case study method scores the highest among all the research methods used in the discipline. The largest number of studies have investigated research issues related to implementation and process of LSS. The LSS uses a wide range of tools/techniques/methodologies: the choice of tools is situation-specific. Manufacturing and health-care sectors have been the focus of LSS research, but LSS has also been adopted by other types of industries. The organizations following LSS have improved bottom-line results, improved company profitability and growth and enhanced customer satisfaction. In general the research is more interpretive in nature; there is still a lack of standard in the LSS implementation framework.
Research limitations/implications
This study is limited to reviewing those articles which contain the word LSS appeared in the title.
Originality/value
This study will help understand the current state of research on LSS, various trends in the field, its applicability and future prospects of investigation in the field.

Abstract
Purpose
The efficiency-enhancing and performance-boosting benefits of lean six sigma (LSS) practices have been advocated in both academia and industry. However, their mediating and moderating effects remain unclear and the impact of LSS practices is underdeveloped in the Chinese context. Therefore, by focusing on publicly listed companies in China, this study aims to investigate whether, how and when LSS practices link to organizations’ innovation and financial performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from 66 Chinese publically listed companies spanning a period of 25 years (2000–2024) was analyzed using the difference-in-difference method which compared the changes in outcomes over time between a treatment group and a control group.
Findings
This research found that LSS practices are positively related to firm-level outcomes including innovation and financial performance. The authors also confirm the mediating effect of operational capability on these relationships. Moreover, the empirical evidence suggests that implementing the quality management systems (QMS) standard, ISO 9001, moderates the relationships between LSS practices and innovation and financial performance such that these relationships are stronger for firms in organizations with higher maturity levels in implementing the standard.
Practical implications
This study sheds light on LSS theory and offers valuable recommendations for lean managers on how to leverage LSS practices to improve their innovation and performance capabilities.
Originality/value
This research provides novel insights into the influence of LSS practices on firm-level outcomes such as the level of innovation and financial performance. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to theoretically propose and empirically validate how and when LSS practices influence firm outcomes by introducing the mediating mechanism of operational capability and the boundary condition of QMS standards.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the design of a novel triangular-shaped wideband microstrip bandpass filter implemented on a low-cost substrate with a notched band for interference rejection.
Design/methodology/approach
The conventional dual-stub filter is embedded with simple fractal-based triangular-circular geometries through various iterations to reject wireless local area network (WLAN) signals with a notched band at 5.8 GHz.
Findings
The filter covers a wide frequency band from 3.1 to 8.8 GHz and has a fractional bandwidth of 98 per cent with the lower passband of 57.5 per cent and upper passband of 31.6 per cent separated by a notched band at 5.8 GHz. The proposed wideband prototype bandpass filter is fabricated in FR-4 substrate using PCB technology and the simulation results are validated with measurement results which include insertion loss, return loss and group delay. The fabricated filter has a sharp rejection of 28.3 dB at 5.8 GHz. Measured results show good agreement with simulated responses. The performance of the fractal-based wideband filter is compared with other wideband bandpass filters.
Originality/value
In the proposed work, a fractal-based wideband bandpass filter with a notched band is reported. The conventional dual-stub filter is deployed with triangular-circular geometry to design a wideband filter with a notched band to suppress interference signals at WLAN frequency. The proposed wideband filter exhibits smaller size and better interference rejection compared to other wideband bandpass filter designs implemented on low-cost substrate reported in the literature. The aforementioned wideband filter finds application in wideband wireless communication systems.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to compile a comprehensive status report on pipes/piping networks across different industrial sectors, along with specifications of materials and sizes, and showcase welding avenues. It further extends to highlight the promising friction stir welding as a single solid-state pipe welding procedure. This paper will enable all piping, welding and friction stir welding stakeholders to identify scope for their engagement in a single window.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is a review paper, and it is mainly structured around sections on materials, sizes and standards for pipes in different sectors and the current welding practice for joining pipe and pipe connections; on the process and principle of friction stir welding (FSW) for pipes; identification of main welding process parameters for the FSW of pipes; effects of process parameters; and a well-carved-out concluding summary.
Findings
A well-carved-out concluding summary of extracts from thoroughly studied research is presented in a structured way in which the avenues for the engagement of FSW are identified.
Research limitations/implications
The implications of the research are far-reaching. The FSW is currently expanding very fast in the welding of flat surfaces and has evolved into a vast number of variants because of its advantages and versatility. The application of FSW is coming up late but catching up fast, and as a late starter, the outcomes of such a review paper may support stake holders to expand the application of this process from pipe welding to pipe manufacturing, cladding and other high-end applications. Because the process is inherently inclined towards automation, its throughput rate is high and it does not need any consumables, the ultimate benefit can be passed on to the industry in terms of financial gains.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the only review exclusively for the friction stir welding of pipes with a well-organized piping specification detailed about industrial sectors. The current pipe welding practice in each sector has been presented, and the avenues for engaging FSW have been highlighted. The FSW pipe process parameters are characteristically distinguished from the conventional FSW, and the effects of the process parameters have been presented. The summary is concise yet comprehensive and organized in a structured manner.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the design of a compact microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) in dual-mode configuration loaded with cross-loop and square ring slots on a square patch resonator for C-band applications.
Design/methodology/approach
In the proposed design, the dual-mode response for the filter is realized with two transmission zeros (TZs) by the insertion of a perturbation element at the diagonal corner of the square patch resonator with orthogonal feed lines. Such TZs at the edges of the passband result in better selectivity for the proposed BPF. Moreover, the cross-loop and square ring slots are etched on a square patch resonator to obtain a miniaturized BPF.
Findings
The proposed dual-mode microstrip filter fabricated in RT/duroid 6010 substrate using PCB technology has a measured minimum insertion loss of 1.8 dB and return loss better than 24.5 dB with a fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 6.9%. A compact size of 7.35 × 7.35 mm2 is achieved for the slotted patch resonator-based dual-mode BPF at the center frequency of 4.76 GHz. As compared with the conventional square patch resonator, a size reduction of 61% is achieved with the proposed slotted design. The feasibility of the filter design is confirmed by the good agreement between the measured and simulated responses. The performance of the proposed filter structure is compared with other dual-mode filter works.
Originality/value
In the proposed work, a compact dual-mode BPF is reported with slotted structures. The conventional square patch resonator is deployed with cross-loop and square ring slots to design a dual-mode filter with a square perturbation element at its diagonal corner. The proposed filter exhibits compact size and favorable performance compared to other dual-mode filter works reported in literature. The aforementioned design of the dual-mode BPF at 4.76 GHz is suitable for applications in the lower part of the C-band.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore Lean Six Sigma (LSS) project and program success in the textile and apparel industry. This paper presents depictions of LSS implementations and the resulting economic impact for a textile company.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative approach consisting of a single descriptive case study and project document reviews was used. This method provided an in-depth view into what LSS means for one medium-sized global textile company and how it has proven important to the company’s success.
Findings
Three successful projects, two on changeover time reduction and one on metal contamination, were completed. Additional findings from this study suggest that strategic partnerships with other high-performing companies and storytelling are two critical success factors. Also, it is critical for management to convey a clear vision for LSS that can be operationalized within a company for successful deployment of LSS textile projects.
Research limitations/implications
The findings from this case study cannot be generalized.
Originality/value
The literature on LSS in small- and medium-sized businesses is limited. The literature on the use of LSS in the textile and apparel industry is even more limited. This paper shows various processes within the textile complex where LSS has been deployed successfully, yielding economic impacts. By using qualitative methods, the value of strategic partnerships, storytelling and a vision was seen.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature on Lean Six Sigma (LSS) for services, construct a morphological analysis (MA) framework and identify research gaps to point to future research possibilities and priorities.
Design/methodology/approach
The MA framework is based on literature review of 175 papers published from 2003 to 2015, across 67 journals recognised by Scopus or ABS Academic Journal Quality Guide 2015. A three-phased methodology is used by the authors, with Phase1 featuring a five-stage systematic review protocol to identify relevant journal papers for review; Phase2 presenting a framework for classifying the reviewed papers in terms of their fundamental, methodological, chronological and sector-wise orientations; and Phase3 constructing an MA framework on the classified papers and identifying the research gaps.
Findings
The MA framework constructed based on six dimensions, namely, organizational context of applications, desired outcomes, implementation systems, LSS tools and techniques, integration with other management philosophies and evaluation methods, involving 40 focused themes, has revealed 355 distinct research gaps as opportunities for future research.
Practical implications
This paper confirms the existence of substantial scope and points to specific topics for further research in the area of LSS for services. The findings demonstrate the gaps in academic research on the subject. In addition, the study also helps organisational leaders and practitioners to look at LSS from a holistic perspective in the services context.
Originality/value
The MA framework of the existing literature on LSS for services presents a unique, systematic effort to identify research opportunities. In addition, a five-stage systematic review protocol is proposed in this paper. This could be valuable to researchers and practitioners in enabling them to systematically review the literature on research subjects of interest to them.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to extend previous studies to a hybrid analysis of three business improvement practices of Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) within last two decades and identify the research gaps and focusses in more comprehensive and robust classification framework.
Design/methodology/approach
A secondary data collection and a literature review were conducted to collect information about peer-reviewed journal articles under six dimensions of a tested classification framework. The frequency and distribution analysis was conducted followed by Pearson’s χ2 test to analyse any relationship between dimensions of framework in order to identify the gap.
Findings
Despite a relatively great deal of regular research outputs about Six Sigma, Lean and LSS, academic journal articles have been found mainly limited to a few industries, themes and countries. “General manufacturing”, “healthcare”, “automotive” and “electronic industries” as sectors; and “tools and techniques”, “benefits” and “success factors” as key themes have been mostly approached by LSS, Six Sigma and lean management articles. It was also found that there is still a great disparity amongst researchers and journals to publish about these three business improvement practices.
Research limitations/implications
The research publications for LSS, Six Sigma and lean management should have wider approach towards various manufacturing and service sectors, countries and journal publications. A greater level of research/enterprise activities has been found in relation to LSS and Six Sigma articles compared to lean management articles.
Originality/value
This research aims to identify the gaps in research publications during last two decades about three major business improvement practices in one package and through more comprehensive robust classification framework and also through comparative analysis.
