Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a weighted algorithm based on the homotopy perturbation method for solving the heat transfer equation in the cast‐mould heterogeneous domain.

Design/methodology/approach

A weighted algorithm based on the homotopy perturbation method is used to minimize the volume of computations. The authors show that this technique yields the analytical solution of the desired problem in the form of a rapidly convergent series with easily computable components.

Findings

The authors illustrate that the proposed method produces satisfactory results with respect to Adomian decomposition method and standard homotopy perturbation method. The reliability of the method and the reduction in the size of computational domain give this method a wider applicability.

Originality/value

This research presents, for the first time, a new modification of the proposed technique, for aforementioned problems and some interesting results are obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an algorithm based on operational Tau method (OTM) for solving fractional Fokker‐Planck equation (FFPE) with space‐ and time‐fractional derivatives. Fokker‐Planck equation with positive integer order is also considered.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed algorithm converts the desired FFPE to a set of algebraic equations using orthogonal polynomials as basis functions. The paper states some concepts, properties and advantages of proposed algorithm and its applications for solving FFPE.

Findings

Some illustrative numerical experiments including linear and nonlinear FFPE are given and some comparisons are made between OTM and variational iteration method, Adomian decomposition method and homotpy perturbation method.

Originality/value

Results demonstrate some capabilities of the proposed algorithm such as the simplicity, the accuracy and the convergency. Also, this is the first presentation of this algorithm for FFPE.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper the authors aim to show the advantages of using the decomposition method introduced by Adomian to solve Emden's equation, a classical non‐linear equation that appears in the study of the thermal behaviour of a spherical cloud and of the gravitational potential of a polytropic fluid at hydrostatic equilibrium.

Design/methodology/approach

In their work, the authors first review Emden's equation and its possible solutions using the Frobenius and power series methods; then, Adomian polynomials are introduced. Afterwards, Emden's equation is solved using Adomian's decomposition method and, finally, they conclude with a comparison of the solution given by Adomian's method with the solution obtained by the other methods, for certain cases where the exact solution is known.

Findings

Solving Emden's equation for n in the interval [0, 5] is very interesting for several scientific applications, such as astronomy. However, the exact solution is known only for n=0, n=1 and n=5. The experiments show that Adomian's method achieves an approximate solution which overlaps with the exact solution when n=0, and that coincides with the Taylor expansion of the exact solutions for n=1 and n=5. As a result, the authors obtained quite satisfactory results from their proposal.

Originality/value

The main classical methods for obtaining approximate solutions of Emden's equation have serious computational drawbacks. The authors make a new, efficient numerical implementation for solving this equation, constructing iteratively the Adomian polynomials, which leads to a solution of Emden's equation that extends the range of variation of parameter n compared to the solutions given by both the Frobenius and the power series methods.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to implement the piecewise spectral-variational iteration method (PSVIM) to solve the nonlinear Lane-Emden equations arising in mathematical physics and astrophysics.

Design/methodology/approach

This method is based on a combination of Chebyshev interpolation and standard variational iteration method (VIM) and matching it to a sequence of subintervals. Unlike the spectral method and the VIM, the proposed PSVIM does not require the solution of any linear or nonlinear system of equations and analytical integration.

Findings

Some well-known classes of Lane-Emden type equations are solved as examples to demonstrate the accuracy and easy implementation of this technique.

Originality/value

In this paper, a new and efficient technique is proposed to solve the nonlinear Lane-Emden equations. The proposed method overcomes the difficulties arising in calculating complicated and time-consuming integrals and terms that are not needed in the standard VIM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to construct analytical solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations, and the existence of rogue waves and their localized structures are studied.

Design/methodology/approach

Function transformation and variable separation method are applied to the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations.

Findings

A series of analytical solutions including rogue wave solutions for the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations are constructed. Localized structures of rogue waves confirm the presence of large amplitude wave wall.

Research limitations/implications

The localized structures of rogue waves are displayed by analytical solutions and figures. The authors just find some of them and others still to be found.

Originality/value

These results may help to investigate the localized structures and the behavior of rogue waves for nonlinear evolution equations. Applying two different function transformations and variable separation functions to two different states of the equations, respectively, to construct the solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Rogue wave solutions are enumerated and their figures are partly displayed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making. In addition, this study also determines the role of halal brand awareness as a moderating variable in influencing the relationship between product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

Five major cities in Indonesia were chosen as study locations because they are student cities, and also cities with more population and more famous in Indonesia, so the sample is more heterogeneous. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed using a convenience sampling method with an effective rate of 93%. Hypotheses are tested by structural equation modeling procedures using analysis of moment structure 22.0.

Findings

The empirical results suggest that product knowledge and product involvement have a positive and significant effect on consumer purchase decision-making; halal brand awareness is a moderating variable in the relationship between product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making.

Research limitations/implications

This study adopts convenience sampling with the sampling area restricted in five cities, so it may not be suitable to be concluded as a consumer in general. This study only conducts research on halal food products in general. Future research may choose to use one brand of halal food product or compare several other halal food product brands. The results of the study support that the heterogeneity of respondents (age, education, gender and religion) has always been an important component in the study of consumption behavior. So that future research can examine the effect of different characteristics of respondents on the relationship between product knowledge, product involvement, halal brand awareness and purchase decisions.

Practical implications

The findings have significant implications that can help producers to develop strategies suitable for halal brand awareness and heighten the decision to purchase halal products by consumers in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries. So that the branding of halal products can enable businesses to access new markets for non-Muslim consumers in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries, so as to increase producer profitability by selling products at higher prices thereby providing higher profit margins.

Originality/value

In accordance with the author’s knowledge, this study is the first study to examine the moderator role of halal brand awareness variables in the relationship of product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic era has severely hampered the economy over the globe. However, the manufacturing organizations across all the countries have struggled heavily, as they were among the least who worked on online mode. The organizations are adopting various innovative quality methodologies to improve their performance. In this regard, they are adopting the Sustainable Lean Six Sigma (SLSS) concept and Industry 4.0 technologies to develop products at a faster rate. The use of Industry 4.0 technologies may reduce material movement and supply chain disruptions with the help of smart intelligent systems. There is a strong synergy between SLSS and Industry 4.0 technologies, resulting in an integrated approach for adoption. This study aims to develop a framework that practitioners can use to adopt Industry 4.0-SLSS practices effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

This study portrays 31 Industry 4.0-SLSS practices and 22 performance metrics identified through a literature review to improve the manufacturing supply chain performance. To compute the weights of these practices, the Robust Best–Worst Method (RBWM) is used. The Pythagorean fuzzy combined compromise solution (PF-CoCoSo) method is used to rank performance metrics.

Findings

According to the RBWM results, “Process Development Practices (PDP)” are first among the major criteria, followed by “Organizational Management Practices (OMP)” at second, “Technology Adoption Practices (TAP)” at third, “Strategy Management Practices (SMP)” at fourth and “Executive Management Practices (EMP)” at fifth, whereas the PF-CoCoSo method resulted in the performance metric “On time product delivery” ranking first.

Research limitations/implications

The identified practices have the potential to significantly improve the performance of the manufacturing supply chain. Practices that encourage a sustainable manufacturing supply chain and the usage of emerging technology will benefit organizational effectiveness. Managers can assess performance using prioritized performance metrics.

Originality/value

During the COVID-19 pandemic era, this is one of the unique attempts to provide a framework to improve the manufacturing supply chain performance. This study integrates and identifies Industry 4.0-SLSS practices and performance metrics for enhancing overall performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the moderator effect of religiosity on the relationship between halal brand awareness and habit towards purchasing decisions of halal products.

Design/methodology/approach

The quantitative method is used in this study. Descriptive and statistical (multiple and moderated regression) analyses are employed to test the hypothesis according to the research model. The data is collected using a cross-sectional design from 197 respondents consisting of business owners in North Sumatera, Indonesia.

Findings

It is found that both halal brand awareness and habit have a positive and significant effect on the purchasing decision of halal products. Meanwhile, religiosity significantly acts as a moderating variable in the relationship between awareness and purchasing decisions, as well as habit and purchasing decisions.

Research limitations/implications

This study revealed the important factor of religiosity as a moderating factor in purchase decisions of halal products. The government may need to collaborate with Islamic educational institutions to raise awareness of the halal concept and product awareness. It is assumed that individuals who know about the Islamic religion will have a higher degree of awareness of halal products compared to individuals with limited knowledge of Islam; thus, providers of Islamic education play a crucial role in raising the level of awareness of halal products. Schools may serve as catalysts for the dissemination of knowledge of halal products.

Originality/value

Developing halal product markets can be done by enhancing the religiosity level of consumers, one of them through attending formal or informal religious classes.

Abstract

Purpose

The classical integer derivative diffusionmodels for fluid flow within a channel of parallel walls, for heat transfer within a rectangular fin and for impulsive acceleration of a quiescent Newtonian fluid within a circular pipe are initially generalized by introducing fractional derivatives. The purpose of this paper is to represent solutions as steady and transient parts. Afterward, making use of separation of variables, a fractional Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue task is posed whose eigenvalues and eigenfunctions enable us to write down the transient solution in the Fourier series involving also Mittag–Leffler function. An alternative solution based on the Laplace transform method is also provided.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, an analytical formulation is presented concerning the transient and passage to steady state in fluid flow and heat transfer within the diffusion fractional models.

Findings

From the closed-form solutions, it is clear to visualize the start-up process of physical diffusion phenomena in fractional order models. In particular, impacts of fractional derivative in different time regimes are clarified, namely, the early time zone of acceleration, the transition zone and the late time regime of deceleration.

Originality/value

With the newly developing field of fractional calculus, the classical heat and mass transfer analysis has been modified to account for the fractional order derivative concept.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to establish a rigorous model that can pragmatically evaluate the facilities management (FM) performance of hospitals.

Design/methodology/approach

Among the applicable performance indicators that were identified from extant literature, a focus group study shortlisted ten key performance indicators (KPIs) in four categories (safety, physical, financial and environmental) and verified their practicality. Using the analytic network process (ANP) method to process the focus group’s responses yielded importance weightings for the KPIs and developed the intended evaluation model. This model was then validated by a case study.

Findings

From the empirical data collected, two types of FM performance data and two scenarios of KPI scores were identified. To process these data and scores, a robust calculation method was devised and then proved useful in obtaining an overall score for holistic hospital FM performance. The case study confirmed the appropriateness and validity of the model developed.

Research limitations/implications

Through illustrating how the ANP method could be applied to develop an FM performance evaluation model, the study contributes knowledge to the multi-criteria decision-making domain. Despite the geographical limitation of the model established (i.e. centered around a group of hospitals investigated in Hong Kong), the study can serve as a reference for developing performance evaluation models for other buildings or infrastructures globally.

Practical implications

The model constitutes a practical tool for evaluating the FM performance of hospitals. Using this model on a regular basis will enable performance benchmarking and hence, continuous improvement of FM services.

Originality/value

The ANP model established is the first of its kind tailored for evaluation of hospital FM performance.
