Abstract

Purpose

The ageing population is a global phenomenon that is occurring in many countries around the world, including the UK. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the proportion of the UK population aged 65 years and over is projected to increase, reaching 25% by 2045. This increase will have a significant impact on a range of social and economic issues. One of the ways to reduce this impact is to improve self-care.

Design/methodology/approach

The availability of simple assistive devices can facilitate physical activity and help complete daily living activities. These devices can also help in the self-management of long-term health and well-being. To encourage self-care, it is essential to create awareness about these assistive products. Simple assistive products such as shoe horns, magnifying glasses or a sphygmomanometer that are readily available to buy from shops were grouped into four boxes or kits. The authors provided these simple devices to 175 community-dwelling older adults in deprived areas and followed them up via a phone survey after 4–6 weeks.

Findings

The authors recorded overall positive feedback on individual products and the kit. The results indicate that there was a sense of empowerment and ability by the recipients to take control of their health and well-being and management of their health condition using items contained in the kit provided.

Practical implications

The study results show that simple assistive products empower older adults to self-care and can provide a positive impact on their activities of daily living.

Originality/value

Previous studies have shown that regular exercise can enhance both physical and mental abilities and reverse certain chronic health issues. Simple household devices can aid in increasing physical activity. This work highlights how these devices enable older adults to take care of themselves, with a focus on capturing their personal perspectives and experiences.

Abstract

Staffordshire's Welfare to Work Joint Investment Plan is an inter‐agency approach to improving job opportunities for disabled people and carers, emphasising the need for their participation in this process. A partnership with Staffordshire University has enabled disabled people to acquire research skills and survey the views of other disabled people on barriers to employment and strategies to overcome them. The article shares this innovative approach to participation and welfare to work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to develop and apply a systematic simulation approach for dynamic analysis in order to study a two combustion chambers liquid propellant engine.

Design/methodology/approach

The logic of the simulation method and the software is based on following the liquids. The implicit nonlinear algebraic equations are solved using a number of nested Newton‐Raphson loops, and the nonlinear and time varying differential equations are solved using a first‐order Euler technique.

Findings

It is found that the developed simulation code predicts the steady‐state values with errors under 5 percent, and this code has the capability to be used in studying the effect of various elements and subsystems parameters on the forecasting the performance and operation of the engine system.

Research limitations/implications

At present, the research is limited to a specific liquid propellant engine. Development of a general purpose software package for simulation of liquid propellant engines, based on the developed simulation algorithm, is subject of future research.

Practical implications

The major outcome of this research is that verifies liquid engine simulation code may be used as a suitable tool to optimize the engine.

Originality/value

This is the first paper in the area of a two combustion chambers engine simulation and dynamic analysis that is based on the application of an existing simulation algorithm.

Abstract

The OPTIC (Optical Product and Technical Information for Construction) multimedia system is being developed as an aid to specifiers in the construction industry. It is based on the European EPIC (European Product Information Cooperation) project to develop a new classification scheme for the building products used in construction and civil engineering, and which also has relevance to the building product modelling projects currently underway. This classification scheme is used as a basis for the system, which displays textual and graphical information on construction products. Two sorts of image are shown for each product — a picture of the product in use and a CAD image. Information on the manufacturers producing this project is also given; hyperlinks connect the system. Although still at the development stage, OPTIC will eventually be published on CDROM.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to explain key aspects of teaching and learning relevant to sustaining literacy development beyond the early years of schooling, including effective teaching of more complex texts. The paper takes as its point of departure Touchstone 9 of the Foundation Touchstones promoted by the Foundation of Learning and Literacy: “Effective literacy teaching and learning need to continue beyond the early years as literacy learning and texts become more complex”.

Design/methodology/approach

This essay adopts a general narrative review approach, canvassing a range of relevant research and examples, along with implications for teaching practice.

Findings

Research shows that beyond the early years of school, literacy development involves learners responding to a range of new demands – demands for which foundational literacy skills are a necessary but not sufficient resource. Effective teaching recognises and draws learners’ attention to how language works in different discipline areas while concurrently supporting learning of content knowledge. The sustaining of enjoyment in literate activity is also identified as an important dimension of ongoing literacy development.

Originality/value

This paper distils scholarship of teaching and learning as well as insights from educational linguistics to outline some important ways in which teachers can support learners in expanding their literacy repertoires across the school years.
