Abstract
This paper provides a synthesis of world class manufacturing literature by identifying eight critical factors of world class status in a manufacturing environment. These factors can be used individually or collectively to assess a profile or organization‐wide world class manufacturing implementation practices. Researchers can use the critical factors to build theories and models that relate these factors to world class status and an organization's relative position to others in the same environment. Decision makers can isolate the critical factors that are necessary for world class implementation.

Abstract
No previously published research has developed a comprehensive set of requirements or critical factors that spans the literature. Offers a set of nine critical factors and 58 supporting performance measurements of world‐class operations (WCO) that have been synthesized from various authors. Proposes that it can be very useful to an organization attempting to identify those characteristics often mentioned in WCO literature that may provide an opportunity to implement core manufacturing strategies and a total global strategy. Managers can devise a plan to assess the current stages, determine the performance measurements, assign responsibilities and resources within the organization and monitor the progress for achieving company‐wide improvements towards WCO status and global competitiveness.

Abstract
Presents an evaluative model that can be used as a framework by management of organizations to evaluate their company’s operations profile. By means of a case study, the authors demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. The data for this study was obtained through interviews, questionnaire survey, and archival sources.

Abstract
Presents an application of the Toyota Production System (TPS) in a manufacturing environment. By means of a case study, discusses the most important elements of TPS, the strategies used by the company for implementing TPS, and the significant benefits that were accrued in manufacturing operations and total inventory values. Obtains data through interviews, questionnaire survey and archival sources.

Abstract
Provides a synthesis of total quality management literature by identifying eight critical factors and supporting performance measures of total quality management in a manufacturing environment. Develops the factors and measurements using data from available literature. Contends that the approach to priorities taken in implementation of these factors can lead to a net long‐term benefit to an organization. Moreover, when a capability is developed as the cornerstone, it is more lasting than if it were developed at the expense of other capabilities. Indeed, some factors may provide benefit to an organization even when no direct attention is given to it.
