Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the role of environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies in enhancing the resilience of Chinese firms during the COVID-19 crisis. By analyzing data from over 3,069 publicly listed companies, the research aims to elucidate the impact of robust ESG practices on stock market performance and operational outcomes during economic disruptions.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a dataset comprising ESG scores and financial performance metrics of Chinese firms, we conduct an empirical analysis to assess the correlation between ESG practices and corporate resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study focuses on evaluating the individual contributions of the social and governance components to overall firm performance.
Findings
The analysis reveals that firms with higher ESG scores, especially in social and governance aspects, exhibit superior stock market performance and operational outcomes during the pandemic. Companies with strong governance mechanisms demonstrate more pronounced benefits, including better long-term sales growth and return on equity (ROE). The findings highlight the critical role of ESG policies in ensuring corporate stability and competitive advantage during crises.
Originality/value
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of corporate ESG ratings on corporate trust and offers a detailed discussion on the protective role of ESG/CSR on firm value during crises, thus providing an original literature contribution.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of nitrogen (N) deposition on clonal growth in a rhizome clonal plant, Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel.
Design/methodology/approach
The study established seven N concentration gradients (0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 g N m−2) to simulate the continuous increase in N deposition for the cultivation of L. chinensis seedlings and assess the response mechanism of the cloned L. chinensis plant at different N levels by analyzing the aboveground and belowground plant appearance traits, parent ramets and daughter ramets of resource allocation and biomass allocation.
Findings
The results of this study showed that the different N treatment levels could promote clonal growth and had certain regularity under the seven treatments. The addition of N could significantly increase the ramet number, rhizome length, rhizome spacer length, biomass of mother ramets, daughter ramets and belowground L. chinensis population when the N addition was greater than 4 g m−2; however, the clonal growth ability of L. chinensis decreased and the rhizome length, ramet number, stem and leaf biomass of daughter ramets and stem biomass of mother ramets significantly decreased when the N addition was greater than 32 g N m−2.
Originality/value
With global warming, atmospheric N deposition is increasing and it is of great significance to explore the response mechanism of different N levels for the growth of clone plants. This study provides basic data and a theoretical basis for the survival prediction of cloned plants under the background of a global climate change strategy and has important theoretical and practical significance for the scientific management of grasslands in the future.

This paper aims to propose the modeling of nanostructured memristor, and the circuit of amplitude modulator was designed and analyzed with memristor. The simulation results show that the nanostructured memristor can be utilized to implement the desired amplitude modulated signal.
Design/methodology/approach
The modeling of nanostructured memristor is proposed in this paper, and the circuit of amplitude modulator was designed and analyzed with memristor, amplifiers and BPF device. For measuring the modulated signal, the emulator circuit of memristor is designed. The simulation results show that the nanostructured memristor can be utilized to implement the desired amplitude modulated signal.
Findings
The innovations of this work are as follows: the AM modulator circuit using memristor has been proposed, analyzed and simulated. The emulator of memristor is given.
Originality/value
The innovations of this work are as follows: the AM modulator circuit using memristor has been proposed, analyzed and simulated. The emulator of memristor is given, and the results of this work demonstrate that the nonlinearity of the memristor can be used to generate the desired amplitude modulation free of harmonic sidebands, because of distortion of the modulating signal.

Abstract
Purpose
Emerging evidence regarding crowdfunding challenges long-standing “gender gap” views of traditional entrepreneurial financing and indicates that female entrepreneurs may have an advantage in crowdfunding. Yet, the literature primarily focuses on influences at the individual level, largely overlooking the interaction between gender and higher-level culture. Drawing on Hofstede's cultural dimensions, this paper aims to investigate the associations among entrepreneurs' gender, culture and crowdfunding performance, particularly in how entrepreneurs' gender and culture interact to affect crowdfunding performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Leveraging a sample of 21,730 Kickstarter crowdfunding campaigns and combining these data with data from Hofstede's study, the World Bank (WB) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), this study applies multilevel models to empirically investigate this question across 22 countries/regions.
Findings
This study confirms that the advantageous effect, that female entrepreneurs are likely to obtain better fundraising performance over their male counterparts, does exist in crowdfunding. Furthermore, the findings reveal that this advantageous effect of female entrepreneurs on crowdfunding performance would be reinforced when cultures of individualism and indulgence are high and culture of long-term orientation is low.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature on gender gaps in crowdfunding and entrepreneurial financing by adding an important culture-related boundary condition to the gender preference reported in earlier crowdfunding work. Moreover, the paper extends the knowledge about the impact of culture on crowdfunding performance and enlightens future research on leveraging multilevel modeling approach to examine the complex interplay between individuals and situations in crowdfunding.

Abstract
Purpose
This article presents a novel case study that analyzes the applicability of DoE in the curling sport in order to improve their own performance and the performance of its athletes. Specifically, this study analyzes the most important factors to increase accuracy and precision in the draw game with curlers' opinions. It was decided to use the “Last Stone Draw (LSD)’ as an appropriate play situation.
Design/methodology/approach
Specifically, this study analyzes most important factors to increase accuracy and precision in the draw game with curlers opinions from the German Curling association. Three research techniques were used in this study: case study, interviews and a well-designed experiment. The analysis through the use of DoE includes a measurement system analysis, an initial variance test between two players, a screening and a characterization experiment.
Findings
The results obtained from DoE suggest that the factors routine, stress, release, balance, and the previous play situation have a substantial impact on the score of the player's draw game. However, no factor has a statistically significant impact on the average distance to the center of the target. Moreover, the DoE analysis also concludes that the accuracy and precision of the player's performance is not affected equally by all analyzed factors, but they turn into highly significant when examining their relationship to the other factors.
Practical implications
The findings of this study can be beneficial to other sports events in improving the performance. Moreover, DoE has proved to be an invaluable tool for many people in the German Curling Association in understanding the factors which influence the curlers performance and also factors which do not affect the curlers performance.
Originality/value
This research attempts to contribute to the existing sports management literature by identifying a way in which DoE can be an effective tool in non-manufacturing settings for identification of most important factors which influence the curling performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study the relationship between information and communication technology (ICT) readiness, use, and intensity and environmental sustainability factors in the lower and middle lower-income countries from 2012 to 2018.
Design/methodology/approach
ICT readiness, use and intensity are measured with the impact of ICT on access to basic services, phone penetration and Internet penetration, while CO2 emissions per capita, fossil fuel energy consumption and methane emissions are used as indicators for air pollution. To achieve this goal, a two-step generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation was performed which thresholds are computed contingent on the validity of tested hypotheses.
Findings
The results demonstrate that increasing ICT readiness, use and intensity in lower and lower-middle-income countries enhance environmental sustainability by decreasing CO2 emissions and energy consumption.
Research limitations/implications
One of the limitations of this study is that the conclusions and policy recommendations do not take into account the specificities of each country. Indeed there are some differences in the growth pattern of ICT in the lower and middle-lower-income countries. Taken together, the authors conclude that increasing ICT has a positive net effect on CO2 and methane emissions per capita, while increasing the impact of ICT access in basic services has a net negative effect on CO2 fossil fuel energy consumption and methane emissions.
Practical implications
The world needs immediate emissions reduction to avoid the long-term danger of climate change. Second, government authorities should give additional efforts in the more pollutant sector such as transport and industry to monitor their energy consumption.
Originality/value
To explore this issue further, the negative net effects suggest that ICT needs to be further developed beyond the determined thresholds, to attain the required negative net effect on fossil fuel energy consumption.
