Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the outcome of the i2CAT Foundations' research and innovation projects that use JXTA P2P technology to share audiovisual content.
Design/methodology/approach
The project consisted of designing and developing a distributed application named eRuc that allows management and sharing of audiovisual content.
Findings
The paper finds that JXTA is suitable to develop P2P applications that share audiovisual files or that interact with different kind of devices. JXTA services and protocols provide an easy integration with other P2P services and a gain of independence from the topology of the physical network (NAT, firewalls, etc.).
Research limitations/implications
High‐quality streaming requires specifically designed P2P architectures. Further testing needs to be performed to evaluate whether the use of JXTA, together with proven, efficient P2P streaming architectures, affect the efficiency of the P2P streaming system.
Practical/implications
P2P technologies have proven to be very efficient for some kind of applications. However, there are no standard frameworks for interoperability and application development may become difficult. JXTA P2P technologies facilitate application development and integration. The authors have used JXTA in different scenarios related with audiovisual content sharing and have proven its suitability. The current work is focused in P2P streaming. Previous literature suggests that there are some proven architectures for P2P life streaming. Using JXTA together with them may prove if JTXA is suitable for applications that require high bandwidth and minimum delay.
Originality/value
The paper provides information of value to information management and technology professionals.

Abstract
Common Core State Standards Initiative mandates increased readings of informational texts within English Language Arts starting in elementary school. Accurate, age-appropriate, and engaging content is at the center of effective social studies teaching. Textbooks and children’s literature—both literary and informational—are prominent in elementary classrooms because of the esoteric nature of primary source material. Many research projects have investigated historical accuracy and representation within textbooks, but few have done so with children’s trade books. We examined children’s trade books centered on three historical figures frequently incorporated within elementary school curricula: Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Helen Keller. Findings revealed various forms of historical misrepresentation and differing levels of historicity. Reporting such lacunae is important for those involved in curricular decisions. We believe children’s books, even those with historical omissions and misrepresentations, provide an unique opportunity for students to incorporate and scrutinize diverse perspectives as they actively assemble historical understandings. All secondary narratives, even historically representative children’s books, can benefit from primary source supplementation. We guide teachers interested in employing relevant and rich primary source material.

Multiculturalism is now one of the greatest challenges in the Western society. It supposes a deeper awareness of the various cultures involved in a given society. Of course, the well‐known cultural and ethnic groups must basically be involved in such a social change. But, since the arising and growth of business ethics as a field of research, the business world as a social institution has revealed itself as a complex network of subcultures. So, the “organizational culture” has become an “a priori concept” in business ethics. Although many researches deal with corporate culture, very few authors emphasize its structural elements. A systemic view of the organizational culture expresses how we cannot develop a corporate ethics without at least a “fore‐understanding” or, at best, a critical judgment on the organizational culture of a given corporation. Through a systematic review of the literature, this study analyzes the empirical literature on the adoption of environmental sustainability strategies in order to identify (i) the main conceptual aspects by which environmental sustainability strategies can be conceived of, (ii) the main determinants of the adoption of such strategies, (iii) the expected impacts on the company’s international performance, as well as (iv) the mechanisms that mediate the effect of environmental sustainability strategies on international performance. This study thereby offers propositions about the relationships between environmental sustainability strategies, their determinants (both in relation to the institutional environment and to the company’s domain), and their performance implications.

Abstract
This article highlights the role of social studies educators in promoting democratic ideals and social action. The benefits of incorporating children’s and young adult literature into the social studies curriculum in the elementary and middle school grades are discussed. Biography, historical fiction, poetry, and information books are presented to teach students about the civil rights movement and school integration. Literature extension activities are designed to encourage students to examine issues of equality, social justice, and human dignity, while also considering their own prejudices and perspectives on social action.
