Abstract

Business ethics, like other ethics, is usefully discussed by distinguishing prudential from legal from ethical actions. Prudential actions are those of simple self‐interest; legal actions are those not forbidden by the system for the use of force in society; ethical actions are those which you consider to be right. While ethics about physically not hurting people or not stealing from them are fundamental, most business ethics issues encountered revolve around truth telling. The ethic of not lying is insufficient: it still permits leaving false impressions, whether deliberate or not. A stronger, more satisfying ethic is “tell the truth”: fully inform the person with whom you are dealing. Truth telling is hard work for, often, we must learn the truth for ourselves before we can tell it to others. Truth telling may or may not lead to higher profits, but it will lead to a life without ethical remorse.

Abstract

Purpose

Architectonics is proposed as a dialogic theory and method to research three discursive spheres: McDonald's corporation, McDonaldization, and McDonaldland.

Design/methodology/approach

Bakhtin proposed architectonics as a new method for the human sciences, one that interanimates cognitive with ethical and aesthetic systemness. This essay develops architectonics further, and applies it to the study of globalization and localization of the McDonald's and Wal‐Mart corporations, which now cohabits with each other in New Mexico (and elsewhere).

Findings

A general inquiry system is suggested as a framework to analyze the architectonics of other organizations, in future international studies.

Originality/value

Through the application of the notion of architectonics to the McDonald's and Wal‐Mart corporations the authors develop an innovative approach to understanding organizations.

Abstract

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.

Abstract

To build a reference collection of electronics literature, any librarian must sooner or later consult Gretchen Randle's Electronic Industries Information Sources. Published in 1968, it is the only such work available. Times change, however, especially in electronics, and so this article is offered as a supplement to Randle's book.

Abstract

In 2003, Howard surveyed African Americans with emphasis on academic identities and college aspirations. This investigator interviewed African-American students at two urban high schools to gain insight relative to their college ambitions, educational capabilities, and academic identities. According to the students interviewed one specific area that affected their academic identity and college aspirations was perceived racism and discrimination, including counselors’ and teachers’ perception of their intelligence, unfair placement in special needs courses, and teachers’ attitude and behavior toward students (Howard, 2003).
