Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to make suggestions for addressing the apparent failure of business schools to communicate good ethical decision-making skills to students studying in postsecondary institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

At the beginning of university management classes, a form is distributed to students outlining a short scenario that requires a course of action. The two questions asked, based on this decision context, are (i) is it ethical to offer bribes to secure construction contracts in countries where this practice is considered an acceptable way of conducting business and (ii) has the student completed an ethics course at the university?

Findings

The scenario described is what occurred at SNC Lavalin, a Canadian construction company that was charged and convicted with offering illegal inducements to foreign officials (in Libya) to secure large government construction contracts. Ethically, the “right” decision would be to not offer bribes; this is because they are illegal when offered both in the Canada and in foreign jurisdictions. The response results to the survey questionnaire showed that 21% of the students thought that bribery was acceptable, if it was a customary business practice in the country where the transaction occurred, and 93% of these students had taken an ethics course. It was interesting to note that almost all the students, who had not taken a business ethics courses, thought that bribery is not acceptable under the circumstances described.

Originality/value

To address the apparent failure to communicate good ethical decision-making skills, this essay suggests that when teaching business ethics, there should a clearer focus on (i) the distinction between morality and ethics; (ii) the problem posed by relativism; and (iii) the reasoning behind ethical standards. This approach is novel in that it makes sense from the perspective of both a business practitioner and university educator.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to make the reader aware of recent changes in the white supremacist movement and how such changes have altered the ways in which the movement can be combatted.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors study the movement in two periods: from 1970 to 2005 and from 2006 onward. The authors contrast the two periods and discuss the legal and financial issues within each.

Findings

The authors find that while legal concepts such as vicarious liability and respondeat superior apply today just as they did before, new tools are needed to fight the new means of financing the movement.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of this study is the lack of quantitative data. Because the “alt-right” became popular around 2015, there has not been enough time for the construction of detailed data sets.

Practical implications

While many law papers have explored the white supremacist movement, the financing side has gone under-analyzed in scholarly research. This is important in light of the rise of the internet, online payment processors, cryptocurrencies and remote organizing and fundraising.

Social implications

The 2017 Charlottesville rally was organized and financed via podcasts, online forums, encrypted chats and anonymous payments. Since then, the movement has mostly gone underground and has become more violent and radical as many members have come to believe that marches and politics do not help them.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no papers in finance that deal extensively with this topic. The authors believe that the severity of the issue and the importance of its funding make this study a valuable source of information. The recent changes occurring within the movement are likely to become even more critical to its success or failure in the future.

Abstract

The concept of corporate social responsibility of the enterprise covers a vast territory! This paper proposes to limit the analysis and evaluation of this concept to three distinct aspects. The first will treat the comparatively new and evolving common law implied term in corporated into the contract of employment relating to the enterprise’s social responsibility of respect towards the employee. The second will analyse an other generically linked recent common law development in the field of the enterprise’s social responsibility of respect towards the employee, namely the implied over‐riding term. Thirdly, the novel and developing wider concept of corporate social responsibility will be addressed and assessed. Some concluding thoughts will follow.

Abstract

Journal articles and books on Toyota's competitive advantage abound. More recent analyses tended to focus on Toyota alone (Coriat, 2000; Liker, 2004) while earlier literature examined the competitive advantage of the Japanese automobile industry as a whole (Asanuma, 1989; Womack, Jones, & Roos, 1990; Fruin, 1992; Dyer, 1994, 1996a, 1996b). Intensive analysis on the Toyota Production System (TPS) notwithstanding, what exactly constitutes the system's inimitability remains elusive. This paper contributes to existing literature by examining how a post-war industrial policy might have given rise to Toyota and Nissan adopting two different strategic logics (or governance structures) as each had a unique set of resources and competences. Different governance structures however, did not appear to contribute to inter-firm performance variance between the two competitors for at least 15 years. What then could be the source of Toyota's competitive advantage and its inimitability? This paper unravels how causal ambiguity might have confounded Nissan, Toyota's only significant domestic rival for the second half of the last century.
