Abstract

Organizations more often than not lack comprehensive security policies and are not adequately prepared to protect their systems against intrusions. This paper puts forward a review of state of the art and state of the applicability of intrusion detection systems and models. The paper also presents a classification of literature pertaining to intrusion detection.

Abstract

The problem of freedom has been a favourite topic of philosophers of all ages, but there appears to be a definite limit beyond which their speculation cannot go. In fact, they have not even reached agreement in respect of a definition of freedom, and it would be impossible to single out any one of them whose views could be called representative. Yet, in a way, Professor Ayer's lucid statement well typifies the scope of the philosopher's field of enquiry, and this is how he formulates his opinion:

Abstract

Purpose

Work reported in the present paper investigated the inhibiting properties of a number of N‐heterocyclic amines in 0.1 mol/l HClO4. An attempt also was made to correlate some molecular parameters of these compounds with their corrosion inhibitor efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The test series included piperidine (pip), 2‐methylpiperidine (2mp), 3‐methylpiperidine (3mp), cis‐2,6‐dimethylpiperidine (26dp), 3,5‐dimethylpiperidine (35dp), 3‐hydroxy piperidine (3hp), 4‐hydroxypiperidine (4hp), 4‐aminopiperidine (4ap), piperazine (pz), 2‐methylpiperazine (2mpz) and cis‐2,6‐dimethylpiperazine (26dpz). The inhibiting effect was investigated in 0.1& mol/L HClO4 by potentiodynamic polarization (DC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

Findings

The results show that these compounds suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes of iron corrosion in 0.1 mol/l HClO4 by adsorption on the surface, which followed a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Experimental observations indicated that basic piperidine and piperazine were better corrosion inhibitors than were their derivatives. The inhibition properties of N‐heterocyclic amines were found to be related to the charge on the nitrogen atom and the sum of the net charge of the all six atoms from the cyclic ring.

Originality/value

This paper provides useful information relative to corrosion inhibition efficiency of the group of N‐heterocyclic amines. It is concerned with a theoretical explanation between electronic and structural characteristics of these compounds and their inhibitor efficiency.

Abstract

Learners with autism require specialized education and supports to ensure acquisition and mastery of various communication skills. This is particularly true for individuals whose disability significantly impacts their language development. Without functional communication, these individuals often engage in severe behavior, have reduced self-determination, and experience diminished quality of life. Accordingly, researchers in special education and related fields have sought ways to improve the communication skills of learners with autism who need specialized language and communication interventions. Although the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is well-established in the empirical literature and has helped countless individuals learn to communicate, the method known as facilitated communication (FC; which also is being called “supported typing” and “rapid prompting method”) has become increasingly popular in recent years. Few methods in special education have been as thoroughly discredited as FC and perhaps none are as dangerous. This chapter contrasts the thoroughly debunked FC and its pseudoscientific characteristics with those underpinning PECS. A brief historical account of each method is provided along with key scientific and pseudoscientific features that distinguish science from pseudoscience. Ultimately, our intent is to further clarify how FC is not an augmentative or alternative communication method and why PECS is.

Abstract

The Chamberlain murder trial or ‘dingo case’ polarised the Australian community – the miscarriage of justice, the relentless media scrutiny and the mediaeval-style public condemnation of Lindy Chamberlain all exposed the prejudices of mainstream Australia. At the same time, Lindy Chamberlain experienced a groundswell of public support: the case was publicised around the world and generated local protest groups. This paper is concerned with re-thinking the historical effects of that case, and is theoretically informed by contemporary debates on the violence of the law, formations of public culture, and cultural trauma.

Abstract

Pyridine and some of its derivatives have been evaluated as inhibitors for the corrosion of API‐45 steel in NACE sour solution. Amongst the various methyl and halogen substituted pyridine compounds, 2,4,6‐trimethyl pyridine is found to afford maximum protection followed by 2,6‐dimethyl pyridine, >2,4‐dimethyl pyridine, >3‐bromopyridine, >2‐methyl pyridine, 4‐methyl pyridine, 3,5‐dimethyl pyridine, >2 and 3‐chloropyridine>pyridine. These results have been discussed in the light of availability of the electron densities with the nitrogen atom of the pyridine ring. The inhibitive periormance of all the inhibitors is found to deteriorate with increase in temperature from 30 to 60°C and with passage of time. The values of heat of absorption and free energy of absorption indicates that the inhibitors have a chemical type of absorption at the metal/electrolyte interface. Polarization diagrams and shift in open circuit potential in the presence of inhibitors indicate that these compounds retard the cathodic as well as anodic reaction process.

Abstract

The institution of an annual series devoted to current and ongoing research in economics and business should be considered one of the notable developments during the period under review. Long standing need for such a reference not withstanding, there has been until this year no systematic attempt to organize a continuing series which concentrated on selected areas of ongoing research, especially adapted to the Jahrbucher format. By facilitating the publication of research papers which are longer than the conventional journal‐length article yet shorter than a monograph, publishing outlets available to scholars in the field have been infinitely expanded. Two years ago, the Royal Economic Society and the Social Science Research Council of Great Britain, developed an experimental series, published by Macmillan, entitled Surveys of Applied Economics. The JAI Press, Greenwich, Conn., has now come out with an annual series, which is expected to fill the gaps in at least seventeen areas of economic theory and business. These are briefly listed below, with pertinent bibliographical citations: Research in Economic Anthropology: An Annual Compilation of Research. Series editor, George Dalton. vol. 1. Abstract

Purpose

Mentoring as a tool for the support and development of novices in many organisations has been considered a putative success. Nevertheless, the literature reveals a paucity of reporting of the mentoring strategies used within the policing profession within Australia. This paper aims to focus on what mentoring is and how it is deployed from the police mentor's perspective. This inquiry intends to shed light into this contextual gap by illuminating the mentoring experiences of 13 police officers from the district headquarters of a regional city in Southeast Queensland.

Design/methodology/approach

These officers, who presented with varying lengths of police service, were interviewed to ascertain their experiences of being a mentor, and to investigate whether they deployed what could be interpreted as a particular model of mentoring. Also considered were their perspectives and impressions of undertaking the role of mentor, their descriptions of how they mentored, and their preparedness for mentoring.

Findings

The interviews revealed a group of police officers that reported a belief in the mentoring process. Further, they considered themselves personally prepared for the role of mentor, and related this preparedness to either past experiences of being mentored, or past experience in the role itself. They placed little emphasis on formal training as a mentor, and more often than not, mentored in isolation. These officers rarely requested any collegial support from fellow mentors.

Originality/value

The data highlighted several implications for mentoring within the Queensland Police Service, one of which includes the effectiveness of the present formal preparation for mentors.
