Abstract
Purpose
The computer has evolved from a tool used solely for business, research and governmental purposes to an instrument characterized by social interaction in virtual worlds. In this context, like‐minded people can converse and interact online in ways that are both enjoyable and satisfying. However, virtual worlds also bring with them cause for concern. These concerns include – but are not limited to – the loss of one's privacy, the fear of being exploited, and the loss of identity. This paper seeks to investigate the current state of affairs of online virtual worlds in terms of what many people deem acceptable and unacceptable forms of behavior.
Design/methodology/approach
A study is presented that explores the unmonitored distribution of electronic materials through the internet. Available technologies are surveyed and recommendations made based on these analyses.
Findings
This paper has shown that effective enforcement of online behavior is, at least, a very complicated undertaking – not one that will be quickly or easily solved. However, it demonstrates a number of techniques people may use today to protect themselves and those around them.
Originality/value
A number of techniques are described to help people traverse virtual worlds in a safe, secure and confident manner. This includes recommendations for people of all ages, from children through to adults.

Abstract
We have not seen an Internet‐based game that can be identified with the arrival of Internet gaming for the masses. Due to the foundational structure of the Internet, there probably will not be one anytime soon. The problem is that the underlying Internet protocol, IPv4, has not had a major update since its introduction in the early 1970s. Fortunately, in the mid‐1990s the standards‐based Internet Engineering Task Force began addressing IPv4’s deficiencies. The result of these efforts is a new version of IPv4 called IPv6. IPv6’s entry will present the Internet gaming community with many opportunities as well as challenges. One of biggest challenges is that the rollout of IPv6 will take years for completion necessitating its coexistence with IPv4 in a number of forms. This paper focuses on issues associated with this coexistence, transition mechanisms that will be used, and what the gaming community can do today to be better positioned as IPv6 becomes the mainstream Internet protocol.

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract
In this chapter, we investigate the role of the Internet of Things (IoT) for a more sustainable future. The IoT is an umbrella term that refers to an interrelated network of devices connected to the internet. It also encompasses the technology that enables communication between these devices as well as between the devices and the cloud. The emergence of low-cost microprocessors, sensors and actuators, as well as access to high bandwidth internet connectivity, has led to the massive adoption of IoT systems in everyday life. IoT systems include connected vehicles, connected homes, smart cities, smart buildings, precision agriculture, among others. During the last decade, they have been impacting human activities in an unprecedented way. In essence, IoT technology contributes to the improvement of citizens' quality of life and companies' competitiveness. In doing so, IoT is also contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as an urgent call to action by all countries to eradicate poverty, tackle climate change and ensure that no one is left behind by 2030. The World Economic Forum (WEF) recognises that IoT is undeniably one of the major facilitators for responsible digital transformation, and one of its reports revealed that 84% of IoT deployments are presently addressing, or can potentially address the SDGs. IoT is closely interlinked with other emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud Computing, for the delivery of enhanced and value-added services. In recent years, there has been a push from the IoT research and industry community together with international stakeholders, for supporting the deployment and adoption of IoT and AI technologies to overcome some of the major challenges facing mankind in terms of protecting the environment, fostering sustainable development, improving safety and enhancing the agriculture supply chain, among others.

Abstract
The writer of a review article in the IT area depends on a variety of information sources containing authoritative material, hyped‐up reports, or even partial or pure fiction. Sometimes articles are biased or the author has a particular axe to grind — for instance the person is associated with a company and the article is no more than a dressed up sales piece. Academics are usually reliable — although unlikely to damn themselves with faint praise if the next grant is round the corner. I will try to exercise good judgement when assessing my information sources, supressing my various prejudices if possible. But what is meant by the word new? For the purposes of this article ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) protocol (rules) and ATM switches in broadband networks, and aspects of Cable‐TV and cable modems have received a lot of exposure. They will not be discussed here. However, there is much interest in the contest between fibreoptic systems to the home and the conversion of telephone lines to wideband lines. These topics will be discussed.
