Abstract

Purpose

Today's executive education programmes must lend themselves to comprehensive evaluation and measurement, in order that return on investment can be clearly demonstrated in the boardroom. This requires a unique approach to programme design from the outset, providing scope to ensure that outcomes can be continually followed up, long after an event has taken place. This paper aims to examine proven methods used to achieve this objective, creating programmes that deliver proof of lasting results.

Design/methodology/approach

This is the 6DsTM approach pioneered by Calhoun Wick and Roy Pollock of the Fort Hill Company, on the basis of research undertaken amongst 30,000 learners. This method focuses on instigating behavioural change interventions over many months. It has been shown to significantly improve return on investment in executive education.

Findings

The paper states the evidence for the effectiveness of this technique but also highlights the fact that the majority of programmes are still not designed with the long‐term evaluation of performance and behavioural change in mind.

Originality/value

The paper challenges the paradigm of the traditional two‐day workshop where the trainer is centre‐stage. It instead concentrates on a new and innovative approach where the learner's line manager is pivotal, and success is measured in terms of measurable improvements in business performance. It will be of interest to educators and purchasers of executive education programmes.

Abstract

Educators who work in community settings often encounter participants with a wide array of individual leadership beliefs, attitudes, and experiences. Given this situation, one of the challenges we face is to identify effective methods and tools to teach leadership in community and organizational settings. As an educator, it is important to understand and use quality scholarship and theory in leadership education. At the same time, it is important to use educational methods that respect the life experiences of the participants and that are easy to understand and communicate. At the University of Minnesota Extension Service U-Lead program, we seek to balance the academic and scholarship portion of our work with the application of practical tools and methods that connect with the real-life leadership experiences of our participants. The purpose of this paper is to review the comprehensive leadership education framework we currently use and outline how it addresses this balance.

Abstract

Last summer, in the heat of the fierce bidding battle for Conoco, press criticism of acquisitions and mergers was also heating up. Time magazine expressed some “Big Doubts About Big Deals.” Newsweek explored “The New Urge to Merge,” and wondered “Is Business Getting Too Big?” Fortune was a lonely holdout on the newsstand as it pleaded, “Don't Stop the Mating Game.”

Abstract

Several recent studies have indicated the existence of a predictable component in stock prices. This study examines the sources of this serial correlation using error‐correction models. The results show that autocorrelated economic variables can generate serial correlation in stock returns. After these effects are accounted for, however, significant serial correlation in stock prices remains. The activities of noise traders and inefficiencies in the pricing of securities, within the context of limitations to the arbitrage process, are suggested as additional sources of serial correlation in stock prices.

Abstract

This bibliography of multidisciplinary periodical literature focuses on white supremacy ideologies and on several groups that espouse white supremacy, including the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi groups like Aryan Nations and The Order, and skinheads. In compiling both scholarly and popular periodical material, the authors were surprised by the relatively low number of recent scholarly articles in the social sciences literature. Nevertheless, some important scholarly sources are cited. Also, although there is voluminous published material covering racism, the authors included only material judged specifically related to white supremacy, a sometimes difficult distinction because the roots of racism and current white supremacist thought are so intertwined.
