Abstract

This chapter seeks to identify the challenges faced by virtual teams and offers solutions to meet those challenges. Basic underlining concepts behind virtual teams are provided along with the most popular forms of virtual teams. Organizational, crowdsourcing, and peer production/online communities are the most common forms of virtual teams. Understanding these basic concepts will help HRD and HRM professionals to develop virtual teams that are suitable for middle- and low-skilled workers. The chapter also presents the various types of communication technologies used in virtual along with the pros and cons associated with each type.

Abstract

We compare a recently proposed generalized eigensystem approach and a new modified generalized eigensystem approach to more widely used truncated singular value decomposition and zero‐order Tikhonov regularization for solving multidimensional elliptic inverse problems. As a test case, we use a finite element representation of a homogeneous eccentric spheres model of the inverse problem of electrocardiography. Special attention is paid to numerical issues of accuracy, convergence, and robustness. While the new generalized eigensystem methods are substantially more demanding computationally, they exhibit improved accuracy and convergence compared with widely used methods and offer substantially better robustness.

Abstract

On 14 December 2000, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Institute for Alternative Futures cosponsored a roundtable meeting to discuss how federal agencies use scenarios and other futures analysis methods to achieve a long‐range perspective. Futures practitioners representing five federal agencies participated in the roundtable, which it is hoped will pave the way for a new Federal Futures Network.

Abstract

The end of the Cold War, the proliferation of “troubled states” and the rise of new kinds of transnational problems is forcing the USA and others to reappraise the nature of national security. This article explores the role of the US military in responding to these new challenges, specifically focusing on military operations other than war (OOTW), ie deterring war, resolving conflict, peacekeeping, nation building, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. Through a consideration of driving forces and the construction of four scenarios (Turbulent Third Wave, The Dark Side, Global Mind Change and Technology Transformation), the article highlights key findings. Across all scenarios, demand for involvement in OOTW was found to increase substantially between now and 2020.

Abstract

Imagine that someone working for your company in the year 2010 sent you a postcard that arrived in 1994. Instead of technology news or stock tips, the message described changes in state or federal governments. How can you use the information to prepare your business? Managers should take the following four scenarios of governments of the future very seriously. One reason is that authorities are betting that all of these scenarios will come true — in at least some of the fifty states. Another reason is that the state governments can exert a powerful impact on corporate prospects.

Abstract

I recently visited the 1994 Poetry Publication Showcase at Poets House in New York City. This is a wonderful annual exhibit of new poetry including both volumes by individual poets and anthologies. This year I was particularly struck by some excellent poetry anthologies. All these anthologies present contemporary poets which should be represented in library collections. Since many libraries do not own individual volumes by all of these writers, the anthologies described in this column will enable libraries to enrich their poetry collection and to introduce new exciting writers to their users.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the key aspects of the international trade in antiquities and the practice of philanthropic donation of objects to museums that allow for certain types of tax deduction manipulation, using a case of tax deduction manipulation from Australia and a case of tax fraud from the United States as examples.

Design/methodology/approach

Two thoroughly researched case studies are presented which illustrate the particular features of current and past antiquities donation incentivisation schemes which leave them open to manipulation and fraud.

Findings

The valuation of antiquities is subjective and problematic, and the operations of both the antiquities market and the museums sector are traditionally opaque. Because of this, tax incentivisation of antiquities donations is susceptible to fraud.

Originality/value

This paper presents the mechanisms of the antiquities market and museum world to an audience that is not familiar with it. It then clearly demonstrates how the traditional practices of this world can be manipulated for the purposes of tax fraud. Two useful case studies are presented.
