Abstract
The following bibliography focuses mainly on programs which can run on IBM microcomputers and compatibles under the operating system PC DOS/MS DOS, and which can be used in online information and documentation work. They fall into the following categories:

Abstract
This paper discusses issues relating to the electronic distribution of journals, in the context of the Electronic Library Project of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). The aim of the Project is to investigate a number of variables relating to electronic journal distribution, including not merely technical but also non‐technical issues such as financial, copyright and social aspects. ISI, together with IBM, has begun to develop a prototype electronic document storage management and distribution system for the electronic library. The prototype will be installed at test sites in the USA and Europe starting in August 1995. Test sites will include both academic and corporate users. IBM's client/server design will enable ISI to manage a very large database (both bibliographic and full‐text), while allowing users to view the information on PCs running widely‐used operating systems. The interface used during the test will be Lotus Notes. The paper describes how users will search the Current Contents database, and the system will deliver full images of journal articles direct to the researcher's desktop over the subscriber's LAN. The images will be available for viewing or printing immediately, if the library has purchased an electronic subscription to the journal in question; otherwise, the article may be obtained from the site's library or a document delivery supplier.

Abstract
Criteria to evaluate and select software for online text information storage and retrieval software are presented in the form of a checklist. The list has a hierarchical structure; the headings are Input of information, Indexing, Interactive searching for information, and Output features, with, additionally, a few remarks about Current awareness, Security/Privacy/Authorisation, Read‐only version, and Integration with other programs.
The first Oslo Online, a new annual event for the Norwegian online community took place from 16–27 February 1987 at the SAS Scandinavia Hotel in the centre of Oslo.

Abstract
The article describes a project undertaken at the National Library of Wales to compare automated systems for the storage and retrieval of historic cartographic records. The selection and purchase of software, cataloguing of a representative sample of historic cartographic materials, system customisation and data input is outlined. Following the evaluation of systems, conclusions are drawn for future automated map catalogue development.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to report on the Pharma Documentation Ring (P‐D‐R) special meeting 2008 on access and use of publishers' content through multiple channels.
Design/methodology/approach
After an introduction to the goals and activities of the P‐D‐R, the paper describes the different sessions of the meeting and then summarises the topics related to document supply.
Findings
The paper reports on the use of primary information in pharmaceutical companies, on global services arising from national functions, on outsourcing information management, and on technical solutions to control, monitor and limit access. One of the hot topics of the conference was restriction by digital rights management (DRM) measures.
Originality/value
This report provides insights into the issues currently facing the pharmaceutical industry. The pharmaceutical industry is the only corporate sector with a long and profitable tradition of networking between information professionals.

Abstract
Three types of software have been evaluated which can be used on IBM‐compatible microcomputers: programs for terminal emulation and communication, programs for conversion of received data, and programs for storage and retrieval of literature information in local databases. With software for these three applications, data can be downloaded from external computers and directly used to build a local documentation system. Functions of these types of programs and general results of the tests are discussed. Criteria for selecting software for online searching, as well as for building local databases using external data downloaded from online searches, are given.

Abstract
This paper summarises the findings of a critical overview to be published in 1988, of more than 200 programs for online information management. The programs are classified as follows: —Software for terminal emulationl(tele)communications/uploading/ downloading, mainly to communicate with remote computers such as databanks, and to aid online searching of databases. —Software to reformat/convert the captured information automatically, so that is can be loaded/imported in databases managed by a program of the next category. —Software for the local, in‐house storage and retrieval of text information to manage the received and reformatted information, as well as other manual input. —Software for word processing to process text information in addition to programs from the categories mentioned above. Programs for microcomputers which can run the operating system PC‐DOS/MS‐DOS received most attention.

Abstract
This article, and the one which follows on CAIRS‐ LMS, describes two library housekeeping packages which have been developed using the database systems of BASIS and CAIRS respectively; although these packages can run in tandem with their respective IR systems, this does not have to be the case, and both packages will run independently. It should be noted that no attempt is made to describe in detail the standard features of the respective IR systems; descriptions of these can be found elsewhere, including the Gower directory of text retrieval systems.
