Abstract
Observes that there has been a renewal of interest in the co‐operative form of business in the UK as a method of working in times of rapid economic change. Notes that co‐operative development agencies, which were established in the 1980s as a means of assisting co‐operative growth and structure, have not always enjoyed a successful relationship with their clients and as a result have been declining in number and influence. Investigates why this relationship did not develop effectively and discusses the development of alternative support structures being established by the co‐operatives themselves. Suggests that these new opportunities present new problems but that the vitality of worker co‐operatives helps overcome these problems.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a theoretically based coding framework for an integrated analysis and assessment of critical thinking in online discussion.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe a theoretically based coding framework for an integrated analysis and assessment of critical thinking in online discussion.
Design/methodology/approach
The critical thinking assessment framework (TAF) is developed through review of theory and previous research, verified by comparing results to previous research, and checked for reliability by comparing results for multiple coders.
Findings
Although process, structure, and quality of online discussions are assessed independently, a standard framework integrating these aspects for comprehensive assessment of critical thinking in online discussions is not found in literature review. The critical TAF described here offers a reliable and valid tool for integrating process, structure, and quality to assess critical thinking in online discussions.
Research/limitations/implications
The critical TAF serves as a methodological tool for assessing critical thinking in online discussion. Further research should further assess the validity and reliability of this tool and should integrate the framework with assessments for other aspects of discussion such as social or instructor presence.
Practical implications
The implementation of the critical TAF in future studies will ultimately help identify online educational activities and tools which best support development and application of critical thinking skills. Furthermore, it might be used to assess critical thinking of individual participants or small groups in a discussion.
Originality/value
The critical TAF described in this paper provides a valid and reliable tool for integrated assessment of the process, structure, and quality of critical thinking in online discussions.

Abstract
Takeovers play an important role in the allocation of re‐sources to the most efficient uses and represent a mech‐anism by which corporate resources are transferred from one management team to another (Jensen and Ruback, 1983). A result of this managerial displacement is expected to be an increase in shareholder wealth. This argument pre‐supposes that managers attempting takeovers are motivated to create value for shareholders. This picture of managerial disinterestedness in the service of share‐holders ignores potential agency conflicts between man‐agers and shareholders. When faced with a takeover bid, which if successful may lead to its own displacement, the management team at the target may devise ways of frus‐trating the bid.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate key strategic decisions involved in turning around a large multinational operating in a dynamic market.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate key strategic decisions involved in turning around a large multinational operating in a dynamic market.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on analysis of archival documents and a semi‐structured interview with the chairman of the company credited with its rescue.
Findings
Turnaround is complex and involves both planned and emergent strategies. The progress is non‐linear requiring adjustment and change in direction of travel. Top management credibility and vision is critical to success. Rescue is only possible if the company has a strong cash generative business among its businesses. The speed of decision making, decisiveness and the ability to implement strategy are among the key ingredients of success.
Originality/value
Turnaround is an under‐researched area in strategy. This paper contributes to a better understanding in this important area and bridges the gap between theory and practice. It provides a practical view and demonstrates how a leading executive with significant expertise and successful turnaround track record deals with inherent dilemmas of turnaround.

Abstract
This chapter reframes the notion of teacher quality to encompass teacher qualities and teaching quality in the context of current demands on teacher and student learning. The chapter includes an exemplary case study of a program that depicts the kinds of qualities and practices that would be needed for effective teaching and learning in an era characterized by the need for higher-level skills and knowledge. The final section presents the implications for pre-service and in-service professional development to address the challenges the reconceptualization of teacher quality presents.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide organized, synthesized information related to initiatives throughout the world based on knowledge‐based development (KBD) such as knowledge cities (KCs), knowledge regions, and knowledge countries. A first search was conducted using the Internet and specialized databases under the keywords “knowledge cities”. The information compiled led to other related keywords which branched out the search. All resulting information was then collated and integrated into a number of categories all unified under the field of knowledge‐based development. A compilation of information on the topic “knowledge cities” and other topics related to knowledge‐based development. The information is presented in eight sections: a glossary of KC‐related terms, a list of knowledge‐based development initiatives, a list of associations and organizations related to the topic, a list of urban KBD‐related value dimensions and their indicators, a list of international rankings, a list of special editions on KCs, a bibliography, and a directory of related sites on the Internet. This effort resulted in a public service available at the World Wide Web. The information included in this compilation is limited mainly to public domain information available throughout Internet in both English and Spanish, as well as in selected databases.

Abstract
The third term has been expressed as but in wind tunnel work it is often more convenient to measure were the omission of the dash signifies that the moment is now measured about a wind axis. The two quantities are very closely related and the measurement of one tells us almost as much as if the two were known. The latter, however, tells us either directly or indirectly what effect the addition of fin and rudder will have on the autorotation properties of the wings alone. The damping of fin and rudder being due essentially to the air flow meeting them at an angle on account of the rotation it should theoretically be possible to deduce this dynamic quantity from a simple static test of moment due to yaw angle. An experiment to test this was carried out several years ago but the static test did not give any approximation to the truth. This was ascribed at the time to the shielding of fin and rudder by the tail plane in the rotative experiment and subsequent work has amply confirmed this view. It is now known that shielding by the tail plane is by far the most important factor in determining the efficiency of the vertical surfaces at high angles of attack.

Abstract
Future‐time is of concern – and of increasing concern – with police system. The modern police has existed in Nigeria for about 69 years (1930‐1999). These comments are an attempt to predict the future of the Nigerian police. Using the events of more than six decades in Nigeria as a baseline, intelligible guesses are made about what to expect of the general shape and character of the Nigerian police in 20 years from now – the year 2043. Prognostication of the future with respect to the Nigerian police is made in two broad areas: areas of continuities in policing; and areas of changes that might or might not occur in the police. And awareness of the continuities in policing in Nigeria provides perspective for predicting changes that might occur in the Nigeria police in the future. The essay is aimed at enabling the Nigerian police to anticipate and keep pace with changes so that it can minimize its own problems, enhance its functional performance and fulfil its proper role in society.

Abstract
Not since the Great Depression of the 1930s have the activities of individual corporations come under as much scrutiny as they have over the past decade. With daily headlines about the savings and loan crisis, insider trading, layoffs and plant closures, green marketing, ingredient labeling practices, and influence‐peddling political contributions, the new watchwords in the business world are ethics, accountability, and social responsibility.
