Abstract

High speed image processing is the basis of a unique 3‐D measurement system developed by British Aerospace and the City University Optical Metrology Centre. The system can produce 3‐D coordinates for over a hundred measured points up to every 1/25th of a second. As a result it can simultaneously measure locations of components during assembly or guide a robot end effector in drilling operations. This work has recently won the 1998 Metrology for World Class Manufacturing Award for Innovative Metrology and a DSP in Action Award for 1998.

Abstract

Optical measurement sensors are increasingly available, often finding application in measurement and inspection of manufactured products. For example, theodolites and laser trackers are already used to calibrate jigs and tooling. Digital photogrammetry is used in dimensional inspection of assemblies such as aircraft wings. Such tasks demand high performance sensors with 2D and 3D capability, large working envelopes, high accuracy, low measurement latency and increased flexibility. The availability of sensors which meet and exceed such criteria is fuelling new possibilities in the manufacturing process itself. Fixed tooling may be eliminated and replaced by flexible fixturing under the control of embedded sensor systems. Sensor technology is reviewed and a novel application presented.

Abstract

The change in editorial direction of the English Historical Review consequent on the death of Richard Pares a year ago, offers a vantage point from which to consider the present situation of historical periodicals in Britain and the United States of America. There are, of course, many periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic that contain articles on historical themes, and many of them of professional standard—often indeed by professional historians. One has only to think of G. P. Gooch's articles on Marie Antoinette in The Contemporary Review two or three years ago, brilliant vignettes by the doyen of British historians. And what is true of The Contemporary Review is also true of The Fortnightly, of The Twentieth Century (the old Nineteenth Century) and of many other British and American periodicals.

Abstract

This chapter investigates the role of gender, mentoring and social capital and contributes to literature about the career development of women in senior management roles in the National Health Service of the UK. It draws on a doctoral study of senior-level managers in a Scottish NHS Board. The data collected are: (i) documentary; (ii) quantitative; and (iii) qualitative. The quantitative data are collected through questionnaires, while the source of qualitative data is in-depth semi-structured interviews. The doctoral study is embedded within an interpretivist and feminist paradigm. Although access to mentoring and social capital was seen as likely to enhance the career progression of females to senior managerial roles, gendered work and family expectations, gendered organisational culture, and normative performances of gendered senior management were identified as obstacles in taking advantages of mentoring and social capital. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only piece of work that explicitly investigates the role of mentoring and social capital in managing gender diversity at the senior managerial positions of the NHS.
