Abstract

Purpose

R&D consortia as a new R&D cooperative form flourished in Japan, the USA, and Europe and can be regarded as a major tool for promoting industrial technological innovation and enhancing industry competitiveness. Inspired by R&D consortia in advanced countries, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland seek to develop the cooperative R&D mechanism in their own distinctive contexts. The purpose of this paper is to identify the patterns of their formation and development and to reveal the dynamics of R&D consortia (termed “public technological platforms” – PTPs) in the Chinese mainland) to give some implications for other developing countries that try to model the cooperative R&D policy for their own technology catch‐up programmes.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides an explanatory framework for analyzing how Taiwan and the Chinese mainland seek to develop R&D consortia based on comparative analysis and case study.

Findings

R&D consortia in Taiwan and PTPs in the Chinese mainland have unique structural characteristics with their common catch‐up goals and have been developing in different ways reflecting the relationships and interaction between academia, industry, and government. The effectiveness of R&D consortia is largely determined by the institutional arrangements including goal setting, organizational arrangements, and government involvement.

Research limitations/implications

Further analysis of R&D consortia and PTPs would be required to form empirical studies based on the collection of more extensive data.

Practical implications

The key to R&D consortia/PTPs' success is how to devise institutional arrangements to ensure effective cooperation between academia, industry, and government and to implement certain technology strategies effectively.

Originality/value

This research contributes by identifying the differences in development of Taiwan R&D consortia and Chinese mainland PTPs and by revealing their evolutionary process.

Abstract

In the modern customer‐centred era, customer value is a strategic weapon in attracting and retaining customers. Delivering superior customer value has become a matter of ongoing concern in building and sustaining competitive advantage by driving customer‐relationship‐management (CRM) performance. However, related studies are rather divergent, the key dimensions of customer value remain unclear, and there is no agreement on the evaluation of CRM performance. This paper develops an integrative framework for customer value and CRM performance based on the identification of the key dimensions of customer value. Emphasising the customer equity‐based view, the paper explores the decomposed effects of customer value on CRM performance in terms of relationship quality and customer behaviours. In doing so, a structural equation model is developed using the partial least square method supported by an empirical investigation of customers in China.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to investigate the relationships between organizational learning (OL), corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate financial performance (CFP) and sustainable corporate performance (SCP) within the context of food-manufacturing family enterprises in Vietnam. Specifically, the study strengthens the combination of these three factors that collectively contribute to enhancing SCP. Furthermore, the research explores the role of service quality (SQ) and green brand innovativeness (GBI) as strategic levers for achieving a competitive edge in SCP within family enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was used the quantitative method to evaluate the influence of CSR, OL, CFP, SQ and GBI on the SCP of family enterprises. The study sample comprised 456 responses from top and middle management of organizations and used the smart partial least squares SEM (version 3.3.2) to analyze the data in the year 2024.

Findings

The study provides significant positive relationships between OL, CSR and CFP in contributing to enhancing SCP within family enterprises. Results suggest that firms with strong OL, CSR and CFP collectively could improve SCP. Furthermore, SQ and GBI emerged as integral factors in differentiating family enterprises in terms of SCP. While SQ plays a significant role in building customer loyalty and trust, GBI is crucial for positioning family enterprises as a sustainable one in the market. Thus, this study contributes to the existing academic knowledge by providing insights into how family enterprises can effectively balance economic, social and environmental objectives for long-term sustainability.

Originality/value

While previous studies have explored these factors independently, this study offers a novel perspective by examining their performances correlatively. The outcomes of this study provide valuable guidance for family enterprises’ managers, CEOs and business leaders to make strategic sustainability plans and create competitive edge when it comes to SCP.

Abstract

Outward foreign direct investment (FDI) from emerging economies, in particular from China and India, is on the rise. As a result, the international expansion of emerging-market multinational enterprises (MNEs) is attracting growing attention among scholars. However, existing research comparing the location patterns of Chinese and Indian MNEs is still scant. In order to fill this gap, we aim to analyze the impact of political risk and cultural distance on the location choice of Chinese and Indian MNEs. Drawing on an institutional approach, we propose several hypotheses regarding the influence of political risk and cultural distance on location decisions. We test our hypotheses using a sample of FDIs carried out by Chinese and Indian MNEs. Our findings suggest that the behavior of Chinese MNEs is less conventional than that of their Indian counterparts when facing institutional obstacles in host countries. Previous papers dealing with location decisions of China’s and India’s outward FDI did not specifically address the impact of political risk and cultural distance. This comparative study provides new empirical evidence on the influence of these traditional host country institutional factors.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to redirect attention from the symbolic significance of global iconic architecture towards exploring its impact and significance within their situated urban context; seeking to unpack whether and how a “situated multiplicity” of residents collectively shape these structures into local icons through their embodied performance and active engagement, creating an “urban meaning” rather than symbolic meaning.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted an inductive empirical analysis of the Taipei Performing Arts Centre (TPAC), using a mixed-method iterative approach including 160 surveys, observational mapping, and 53 interviews with citizens and experts in the TPAC neighbourhood.

Findings

The spectacular image of a global icon can sometimes alienate citizens because of its design, and thus affect their embodied performance. However, we found divergent interpretations of iconicity, including residents who see economic, cultural and social benefits, and contributions to the internationalisation of local urban landscapes. Future aspirations for engagement with the TPAC are centred on the public plaza, highlighting the importance of prioritising public spaces in the design and operation of iconic buildings to foster community engagement and social interactions.

Practical implications

The study’s findings have implications for policy makers, planners and architects seeking to embed global iconic buildings into neighbourhood planning initiatives.

Originality/value

Minimal scholarly attention has been paid to citizens’ perspectives of iconic buildings. By addressing this gap, we contribute to a holistic perspective of how active and embodied practices shape the urban context and give it meaning. Furthermore, this study suggests practical ways in which such buildings can serve various populations.
